Olive Oil

Does anyone know the shelf life of Extra Virgin Olive Oil? I've found a bottle in the back of my cupboard that says best before February 2015 (hanging my head in shame). Will it be OK or should I get rid?

Taste, smell, colour ok, it’s ok
I prefer to forget dates and go by smell or taste for most things

I agree with what others have said but my DH would throw anything out of date . It really annoys me !

It should be fine if unopened
if not it will smell rancid

I never thought to look at the dates on oils!

I've just finished a bottle of olive oil that had a use by date of 2015 , still alive and kicking, as everyone has said , if it doesn't smell or taste rancid it will be fine .

Thank you everyone, I'll give it a go. definitely won't show my husband though gillybob, he'd do the same as yours or he'd convince himself it didn't taste right.

Just use it. It is going to be heated up anyway if you are using it in cooking, so in the very unlikely possibility of there being any contaminants, the heat will kill any thing that shouldn't be there.

I would tend to cook with it but not use it in salad dressings etc. I’m another one who goes by taste etc. rather than dates with oils. Have used sesame oil long past the date given with no ill effects.

I am amazed that someone needs to ask this question. As above have said, go by smell and taste and if you need to dispose of it, how would you do that, down the drain and risk blocking or would you THINK and may be use it for wiping over garden tools after use, for rubbing into wooden serving boards or similar, drawer runners, mix with sugar for cleaning hands after gardening. Why would you ask this question.

I cannot really say about the quality but like others would have stuck my finger in and made a decision.
I would just like to add that after my holiday, I will be buying top quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar instead of own brands, I have been totally converted.

Is it a good idea to drizzle OO on to your salads?I get confused about this as it is a fat. I love the taste on a green salad but often wonder if i am wiping out the benefits of the salad in terms of calories when i drizzle OO over it.

I live in Italy and buy my olive oil locally. Here, we buy up for one year around November. However, they say it is good for two years. This is the pure stuff at 0 miles from my own area.

Olive oil that has been opened should be consumed within one year after opening. It can still be consumed after one year, but it loses much of its freshness and bouquet.

I'm the same as Giulia! Hopefully this year we will have our own oil as the olive crop is good so far!

If it is sealed should be fine for all uses... if opened use for cooking rather than a dressing or dipping!
