We recently moved and alas no longer have access to our wonderful fresh fish man. I wondered if anyone gets frozen fish from the well known chain *land as we have one in town. If so is it good?

Not to put anyone off but when I looked at the countries of origin of Iceland frozen fish in our local store last year because I fancied some, it really put me off buying any - I can't remember why now, was it something like Thailand? Anyway, it was nowhere I expected fish sold in the UK to come from ?

I always buy frozen fish, no waste and well priced. Aldi great!! Tesco have whole salmon on offer sometimes, so I buy a whole one, cut it into fillets and pop in freezer.

Morrison's fresh fish is excellent. Just thought I'd say.

I buy fresh fish from Waitrose when its reduced and freeze it. I always have it packed individually in cook bags with a bit of this and that so that OH can turn the oven on and low and behold turn out a wonderful meal. We must eat fish 3 times a week.

Also, you can take your own container for it to Morrison's and they'll weigh it into there for you with no single use packaging.

I prefer buying fresh fish and eat on the same day.

Depending on where you live OP companies such as Regal Fish and DD Fish Supplies will phone you for your order every 8-10 weeks. They will deliver fresh fish on ice to your home.

I know someone who overseas all the London markets and brings me whatever I request from Billingsgate. You can't get fresher unless you're on the quay.

We have loads of fish vans around here, in fact it’s a bit like the Cod War, as they are always trying to poach customers.
Lucky you! smile

When we first moved here, many years ago now, I noticed a fish van coming up the road once a week and calling at a neighbour's. So I popped out and asked if I could buy some fish and would he be calling regularly. 'No, love' he said 'I only deliver to them as a special favour because I used to deliver to them where they lived before, I don't want new customers' grin

We had a wonderful fish man who called when we lived in Devon called Mr Gulliver.

Now I go to the supermarket and it seems fine. Waitrose fish is very good.

I asked the fishmonger at our local Tesco and he told me that even the "fresh" fish has been defrosted once already. All very confusing - so when I do buy from the fresh fish counter, I use it that day and do not refreeze it.

I was staying in a hotel for three nights in Northumberland last week on a coach trip from the midlands.
One morning I ordered the kippers and they were so
fresh and absolutely delicious, I had them the next morning. The best I’ve ever had?

GabriellaG Tue 18-Sept-18 15:09:30

Oh dear! OverSEES not overSEAS. blushhmm

Jalima1108 Tue 18-Sept-18 15:10:34

an understandable mistake!! grin
quite logical in fact.

I bought fish from Regal for years.
They would ring the week before delivery and tell of any special offers and they sold the most delicious sauces too.
It was not cheap but very good.
They suddenly stopped, I suppose demand went down and it wasn't worth coming.
My friends who live in N Lincs go to the docks at Grimsby and buy it from them, they have a huge depot there.

Incidentally on holiday last week, I had the most wonderful seared Tuna, it was beyond good.

There is a company I think called Tonkin in Cornwall (online) do the most fantastic fresh fish chilled and delivered overnight. We also use Waitrose, great fish and huge discounts on Friday. Wouldn’t eat frizen supermarket!

'Dickying-up recipes....' Cracking coinage.

We have frozen fish from Tesco's and it's fine. Not epic, but fine.

I buy (unfrozen) salmon, smoked haddock and cod from Lidl and would thoroughly recommend.

ladycatlover Tue 18-Sept-18 16:07:54

We buy from the Cornish Fishmonger. Free deliveries on over £100, minimum order £25. Best to give the bad news first! LOL

Good selection of most kinds of fish (seasonally dependent), but I'm allergic to shell fish and don't like some of the other stuff they do. Their kippers are particularly fantastic! Yum!

We always buy enough to get the free delivery. It arrives overnight in polystyrene box with cooler things in to make sure fish kept cool. We then freeze it ourselves. Some fish is only available frozen - you just need to check out their website.

We've always been really pleased with the quality and flavour of the fish we've bought. But never bought shellfish (see above) and not octopus stuff either as I can't stand it.

Sometimes fish that is sold unfrozen has previously been frozen.

Fennel Tue 18-Sept-18 16:50:57

I like smoked fish too, especially smoked mackerel.
I make a pate with smoked mackerel, tinned tuna, hard boiled eggs and mayonnaise.

Cathy21 Tue 18-Sept-18 17:30:45

This morning bought fish in Iceland at 3 packs for £10. We bought Wild Salmon, Trout and whitefish this time. Various sizes, the whitefish is 800g

Fennel Tue 18-Sept-18 17:34:49

That's good value!
I would like the salmon and the trout.

Lancslass1 Tue 18-Sept-18 17:37:17

Yes I do Izabella.
This evening we are having lemon dusted yellowfin sole fillets from there
They are lovely
We are fortunate in that there is a fish factory not far from where we live and we get frozen sea bass from there but the place you mentioned sell them too.
We get jumbo tempura prawns (may be in the "party" section" )
They are delicious.
I also get salmon steaks
Go for it.
You won't be disappointed.

anniegold195 Tue 18-Sept-18 18:42:31

Agree . Big selection and reasonably priced. Fresh fish (?) Has already been frozen. If i buy "fresh" i have put in my deepfreeze for up to month and it still tastes as good from the day mr fish was caught. Whoops and mrs and ms wink
