Frozen fish

WARNING this post may put you off fish.
On holiday in scotland we were catching trout from the local loch and bbqing. Local gilly brought us a salmon up and I watched while he filleted it, the flesh was filled with wriggling pink things which he explained were worms, but it was o.k because cooking killed them, he then went on to say as far as he knew all fish had worms.

I used to buy Waitrose own fish fingers from the chilled section. One day - must have been bored - I read the label on the back of the packet - so disappointed to read the fish had previously been frozen!

I think the ghilly was having you on. Farmed salmon certainly have a problem with sealice, which is why I do not buy it. They are also overdosed with chemicals to try to prevent this.

I have yet to see any sign of worm infestation in fish I cook. If it was that rife the fish would be riddled with holes or distortions of the flakes in the fish.

Anyway, you already have more bacterial and enzyme cells in your body than human, the human biome in your gut accounts for 2 lbs of them.

I used to love tuna, Sainsbury's tinned skipjack tuna steak in sunflower oil, no other kind.
One night I saw a tv programme on fish hosts and it showed a whole dead tuna with live wriggly things with faces, stuck to it's 'mouth' as they cleaned it.
A few weeks later in MailOnline, I read about a woman who'd bought tinned tuna and on opening it, saw one of those same wriggly things on the top. There were photos and I've never bought tuna since.
That means thst I only have cod or possibly haddock but even those have worms. Now I just eat fruit, veg, pulses, dairy, pasta, rice and breads but I make my own.

I felt traumatised!

I live close to the sea so can and do buy really fresh fish at a number of outlets. That includes mussels, clams, scallops, crab and lobster too. We are also close to a salmon farm, although I much prefer the flavour of wild salmon, and there is a salmon farm not very far away where the intrepid can catch their own fish. However, I do keep some fish in the freezer for "emergencies" (i.e. I'm too tired to cook anything very demanding or I simply forgot to get supper organised until it is time to cook it). I don't think the texture is ever as good as that of fresh fish, certainly not with delicate fish such as gurnard, but the flavour is usually fine.

Izabella I won't buy fish anywhere but Iceland. It's good value, quite cheap, but more than that it's frozen as soon as it's caught at sea. Can't have it fresher than that.

Izabella. I wouldn't buy fish anywhere else other than Iceland. It's fabulous value for money and so fresh as they freeze it at sea when it's just been caught.

I’m an Iceland fan too.
I think their stores and products have gone very much ‘upmarket’ in the last year or so, but the prices remain modest.
What’s not to like?

slutty you're right about Iceland. There's a very smart new one where my daughter lives, and when I went in there the other day, I wondered why there's such a fuss about Lidl and Aldi when Iceland is probably comparable in terms of price and quality.

absent - gurnard! I haven't seen that in the shops here.
We used to have it often when I lived at home as a child. We were on the coast too.

Good news!! Chatting in the library and found out there is a mobile fishmonger once a week so will try his wares next week.
