We recently moved and alas no longer have access to our wonderful fresh fish man. I wondered if anyone gets frozen fish from the well known chain *land as we have one in town. If so is it good?

Sometimes fish that is sold unfrozen has previously been frozen.

We buy from the Cornish Fishmonger. Free deliveries on over £100, minimum order £25. Best to give the bad news first! LOL

Good selection of most kinds of fish (seasonally dependent), but I'm allergic to shell fish and don't like some of the other stuff they do. Their kippers are particularly fantastic! Yum!

We always buy enough to get the free delivery. It arrives overnight in polystyrene box with cooler things in to make sure fish kept cool. We then freeze it ourselves. Some fish is only available frozen - you just need to check out their website.

We've always been really pleased with the quality and flavour of the fish we've bought. But never bought shellfish (see above) and not octopus stuff either as I can't stand it.

I buy (unfrozen) salmon, smoked haddock and cod from Lidl and would thoroughly recommend.

'Dickying-up recipes....' Cracking coinage.

We have frozen fish from Tesco's and it's fine. Not epic, but fine.

There is a company I think called Tonkin in Cornwall (online) do the most fantastic fresh fish chilled and delivered overnight. We also use Waitrose, great fish and huge discounts on Friday. Wouldn’t eat frizen supermarket!

Incidentally on holiday last week, I had the most wonderful seared Tuna, it was beyond good.

I bought fish from Regal for years.
They would ring the week before delivery and tell of any special offers and they sold the most delicious sauces too.
It was not cheap but very good.
They suddenly stopped, I suppose demand went down and it wasn't worth coming.
My friends who live in N Lincs go to the docks at Grimsby and buy it from them, they have a huge depot there.

Oh dear! OverSEES not overSEAS. blushhmm

I was staying in a hotel for three nights in Northumberland last week on a coach trip from the midlands.
One morning I ordered the kippers and they were so
fresh and absolutely delicious, I had them the next morning. The best I’ve ever had?

I asked the fishmonger at our local Tesco and he told me that even the "fresh" fish has been defrosted once already. All very confusing - so when I do buy from the fresh fish counter, I use it that day and do not refreeze it.

We have loads of fish vans around here, in fact it’s a bit like the Cod War, as they are always trying to poach customers.
Lucky you! smile

When we first moved here, many years ago now, I noticed a fish van coming up the road once a week and calling at a neighbour's. So I popped out and asked if I could buy some fish and would he be calling regularly. 'No, love' he said 'I only deliver to them as a special favour because I used to deliver to them where they lived before, I don't want new customers' grin

We had a wonderful fish man who called when we lived in Devon called Mr Gulliver.

Now I go to the supermarket and it seems fine. Waitrose fish is very good.

I know someone who overseas all the London markets and brings me whatever I request from Billingsgate. You can't get fresher unless you're on the quay.

hallgreenmiss Tue 18-Sept-18 14:36:45

Depending on where you live OP companies such as Regal Fish and DD Fish Supplies will phone you for your order every 8-10 weeks. They will deliver fresh fish on ice to your home.

nannyof4 Tue 18-Sept-18 14:33:55

I prefer buying fresh fish and eat on the same day.

lizzypopbottle Tue 18-Sept-18 14:32:00

Also, you can take your own container for it to Morrison's and they'll weigh it into there for you with no single use packaging.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 18-Sept-18 14:28:52

I buy fresh fish from Waitrose when its reduced and freeze it. I always have it packed individually in cook bags with a bit of this and that so that OH can turn the oven on and low and behold turn out a wonderful meal. We must eat fish 3 times a week.

lizzypopbottle Tue 18-Sept-18 14:26:49

Morrison's fresh fish is excellent. Just thought I'd say.

mabon1 Tue 18-Sept-18 14:18:41

I always buy frozen fish, no waste and well priced. Aldi great!! Tesco have whole salmon on offer sometimes, so I buy a whole one, cut it into fillets and pop in freezer.

Not to put anyone off but when I looked at the countries of origin of Iceland frozen fish in our local store last year because I fancied some, it really put me off buying any - I can't remember why now, was it something like Thailand? Anyway, it was nowhere I expected fish sold in the UK to come from ?

sparkly1000 Tue 18-Sept-18 13:06:44

My OH is a fishmonger who tells me that trawlers that fish in British waters just chill the catch, it's kept on ice until it goes for auction. The exception being Turbot which is frozen at sea as it goes off very quickly. If it has been pre-frozen it will say on the packaging.
The majority of tuna sold here is caught in the Mid-Atlantic or Pacific Ocean and frozen on factory ships as they can remain at sea for up to 3 months at a time.

ninathenana Tue 18-Sept-18 12:28:02

Haven't read the whole thread and may have been said but if you prefer fresh our local Tesco and Asda have a wet fish counter which sell lovely fish

JackyB Tue 18-Sept-18 12:21:26

Ooh - I'm going to France next weekend - I'll have a look if we get a chance to go shopping.

Fennel Tue 18-Sept-18 12:19:03

Jaccky - Strangely, smoked haddock is available in France. The call it 'Addock. Unsmoked is called eglefin.

JackyB Tue 18-Sept-18 12:14:19

As I live in the middle of the continent - 1000 km from any coast in any direction, I always buy frozen fish, as I had heard, too, that it was frozen on the boat, so is fresher than any wet fish that is available.

I usually cook it from frozen in the microwave, which preserves the flavour well. Haddock is our present favourite - a nice meaty texture and a creamy taste. (Smoked haddock is unknown in Germany, but I like to have some when I visit the UK)
