Where has this fad for salted caramel come from? We are being urged to cut down on salt and sugar intake but now the latest trend is to put salt in our desserts and sweets too.

On the subject of healthy eating, am I the only one who finds it rather strange that Macmillan should raise funds by encouraging us to consume lots of sugary cakes - surely something to be discouraged in the light of cancer prevention? I know, I know.... I'm being a killjoy, but surely they could come up with a healthier option?

Salted caramel is my favourite flavour and I have a very sweet tooth. Whoever dreamed it up is a genius smile

There’s nothing wrong with consuming sugary cakes as a general point- it’s how much and how often that is the point.

When I first sighted the combination I had a yuck thought but curiosity got the better of me and I'm now a devotee.

Salted caramel is delicious. Chocolate, ice cream, etc. Chilli chocolate good too.

anitamp1 Tue 06-Nov-18 12:11:59

Salted caramel is the best thing EVER. Particularly ice cream.

maddyone Tue 06-Nov-18 13:02:20

I’m sure it’s not good for me, but I absolutely love it in anything, salted caramel ice-cream, salted caramel fudge, salted caramel anything at all.

Izabella, I well remember my sister adding salt to our porridge one day when we were younger. I heaved with every mouthful! When I got to school I 'recycled' it on the playground! She never added salt again. Ughhh!

I recently had a dessert in a pub in Rye. Chocolate and salted caramel milk tart with caramelised bananas and clotted cream. I died and went to heaven three times and am now back down to earth searching for a recipe.

Any idea, French gransnetters, where to get clotted cream?

oldgaijin Tue 06-Nov-18 13:11:44

I used to make Russian toffees with my Grannie and she always put in a generous pinch of salt, so where has this 'salted' bit come from? It's nothing new.

Mmmmmm.... I just adore salted caramel anything!
This has reminded me that I need to make more salted caramel ice cream and sauce before Christmas.

Salted caramel ice cream. My go to favourite treat. You’ve wet my appetite now. Oh dear holding back the urge.

I was in a holiday resort in Australia recently and favorited the salted caramel ice cream from the Italian ice cream shop. They said it was the best seller by far!

Im afraid I just love everything salty. So salted caramel is way up the list. Always salt my porridge and serve with a sprinkle of muscovado sugar and cinnamon. Sometimes I have .a very guilty spoon of cream on it too. ? I take after my dad who threw a bucket of salt in all his food - he lived to 95. I also have naturally low blood pressure and am not overweight, thankfully.

Don't go with the fad. I make caramel sauce with ordinary salted butter - don't add any extra salt at all. I'm always told it's just right! Needless to say say I only make as a treat now and again

I havent heard of salted caramel until today, I dont live in the UK. I am a "salt person" I enjoy sea salt chocolate and LOVE salty licquorice which is popular over here, there is sweet or salt licqourice, it is suggested eating too much licqourice increases blood pressure, whether it is salty or not, you just cant win!

If you cant get clotted cream, in the country where you live ( as I cant) it is so easy to make and delicious too.

My Dad used to make the best porridge ever when I loved at home. He put sugar in it but always a pinch of salt it was brilliant. I'd forgotten about it until recently when I was trying to think why my porridge didn't taste like Dads. I'm putting it in now and it's gorgeous. I do love salted caramel too xx

Sorry lived at home ;-)

Low blood pressure is not to be coveted.
Low bp is as bad as high bp.

GabriellaG Tue 06-Nov-18 15:18:36

Salt is supposed to enhance the flavour of many (but not all) foods.
I use a pinch when making porridge but adding it to caramel this and that is a bridge too far. There is no getting away from it, nor can we escape all the other food fads which abound nowadays.

Went shopping this morning. The latest in mincemeat pies is.......salted caramel. As I love both couldn't resist buying a box. Looked forward to one with morning cuppa. So disappointed, won't be tempted again.
