Where has this fad for salted caramel come from? We are being urged to cut down on salt and sugar intake but now the latest trend is to put salt in our desserts and sweets too.

Oh Acanthus you are so right - wheat gives me migraines so I stopped eating it in 2001. It does make you aware how many foods are various forms of wheat - I think it must be a big factor in the weight and diabetes disaster. We need a culture change - got to do it ourselves, businesses are not interested in public health.

I had salted caramel popcorn at the cinema the other week - very yummy! And Kelly's chocolate fudge ice cream with salted caramel sauce is absolutely delicious!

Oh please ladies, it’s not ‘salt’ at all, but NATURAL SEA SALT so probably not harmful at all ??

Camelotclub Tue 06-Nov-18 17:14:21

A recent blood test showed my sodium blood levels are below normal so I should eat more salt!

nor can we escape all the other food fads which abound nowadays.
I do think that some food fads are advantageous though, GabriellaG - for instance so many people are careful about eating anything with wheat or gluten in it that there is now an abundance of gf foods on the supermarket shelves. So that is a plus for coeliacs.

I like salted caramel too but my real favourite in the chocolate department is coffee truffle chocolate and apart from Thorntons nobody seems to make coffee flavoured chocolate any more.
Any of you ladies know of any?

I'm assuming your post was tongue in cheek marionk!

GabriellaG. My BP is fine. On the low side of Normal. Doctors have always told me it's healthy.

anniefrance it's hard enough getting decent non-UHT cream in France. Clotted cream? Never. They don't know what they are missing.
My theory is that it all goes to the patisseries. I'm convinced that they skim some off the so-called 'whole' fresh milk too. It's definitely not as taasty as it should be.

M&S Salted Caramel ice cream is to die for...I think I’ve been to heaven, but definitely come back down to earth for second helpings?

grannyticktock Tue 06-Nov-18 18:54:12

Haagen-Dazs salted caramel icecream is fabulous too. The only thing that stops me guzzling it too often is that it's very hard frozen and needs to thaw for 10 mins or so to be at its best.

I'm with the minority, love caramel, toffee, fudge etc (in moderation!) but not with salt in. Now it is difficult to get it without.

BBbevan Tue 06-Nov-18 19:33:43

DH and I tried making salted caramel. Filled the kitchen with black smoke. What did we do wrong?

homefarm Tue 06-Nov-18 20:07:15

BBevan - too high a temperature

acanthus is correct. I find it unbelievabld and scandalous that MacMillan though doubtless doing some very excellent work, insist on advocating the consumption of creamy sugary
cakes as a means of fundraising.

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Nov-18 21:26:36

I don't think that creamy, sugary cakes once in a while, ie once a year, are that bad for you unless you are diabetic of course.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Nov-18 21:31:52

The cakes at our Macmillan do were vegan, gluten free, sugar free (mostly)
They weren't very nice, either. smile

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Nov-18 21:33:41

grin
DD makes some great gluten free cakes but they are not vegan or sugar free!

MissAdventure Tue 06-Nov-18 21:38:35

I think it was the fact that they looked wonderful.
I was distinctly underwhelmed..
