It’s official, I’ve just heard it on radio 4.
It’s scone, to rhyme with moan and
Its jam first!

DEFINITELY, that is how to spell it, scone to rhyme with gone, it was quoted on Kitchen Cabinet Radio 4 the other day

MissA, no you’re not, I say it that way too.
I say scone both ways because I’m cosmopolitan!
Now how about Shrew or Shros- bury?
The beeb doesn’t seem to know either

All my life I pronounced it "moan" until my favourite baker Mary Berry told me it is "gone" - now my favourite radio station is disputing this - totally confused! Jam goes on first (I think!).

What about Iran and Iraq?

Elegran Sun 25-Nov-18 09:45:38

Do they eat many scones in Iran and Iraq? If they do, they probably call them something we couldn't pronounce.

Now how about Shrew or Shros- bury?

I always called it Shroosbury until I had a rather posh boyfriend who came from there and he told me it should be pronounced Shrowsbury.

I once heard a tour guide inform a group of Americans that what they were eating were called “sconcies” he was winding them up of course but for the rest of the afternoon they kept talking about how delicious the sconcies were.
