What are your 3 ‘go to’ family suppers?

I made dinner last night and got to thinking of my usual favourite suppers that I make on a fairly regular basis. Nothing fancy (as for a special occasion) just ordinary dinners.

Mine are:

1. Chilli & rice
2. Hungarian goulash a la Delia
3. a pork, apple, sage & onion dish topped with cheesy mash and served with green cabbage.

Interesting to see what people call their evening meal . Supper in what we Scots would have before going to bed . Dinner is mid-day and tea is at well ,tea time .

"Supper" Flora is what the aspirational working class refer to when they mean "tea" or evening meal. grin Perhaps it's David Cameron's fault for popularising "kitchen suppers".

We have our main meal at lunch time and a light meal at supper time (or tea time, if it is bread, spread and cakes).

Spaghetti Bolognaise
Risotto (no one recipe in particular)
Home made curry, (no one recipe in particular)

I love the Mary Berry lasagne too, but for greater speed and tastiness, I use Tesco's Toulouse sausages and fresh pasta sheets.

So many of us use a different moniker for a cooked meal ‘of the day’. You’re right Lazigirl and Floradora9 - maybe I should have just said ‘main meals of the day’.

Oh Emma you have so disappointed me. Trawled the thread looking for Urmstongran's port recipe (I have bottles taking up space in the cupboard) but guess you mean pork! Still looks a great recipe and I love this thread for meal ideas. I don't care what meals are called by the way Urmston. It was tongue in cheek. grin.

Triple fish pie (Mary Berry)

Egg Curry (adding whatever veg I have to the sauce)

Macaroni cheese. Meatballs and pasta
Cheese pie -throwback to childhood. No pastry-layers of potato,carrots and onions with grated cheese (Leicester is best ,but any strong flavoured cheese is ok) lots of black pepper and milk to almost cover the veg. Cook 200 degrees about 45-50mins. Think it was originally a wartime recipe my Mum made. Always a favourite with me. Made it tonight.

And I used to think that what with a beef stew (with prunes and red wine) , a couple of times wild boar, and then a quiche with varied fillings , that I was really special! Seeing what others make, am humbled but impressed.

I don't have any 'go to' recipes, because I'm not a fan of cooking, but I did make a sausage 'thing' after reading this thread, and the pork recipe sounds good (and easy!) too. smile

I would love to try tofu but haven't the foggiest notion how/what to buy or cook it confused.

I use this recipe for crispy tofu. Even my tofu hating OH loves it. I usually serve with stir fry veg,

I am surprised how many of you count a roast chicken as a weekday evening meal. We are not vegetarian but only eat meat at the weekends. One day chicken, one day fish, one cheese or egg meal and a simple veg stew on the fourth night. There are usually leftovers at some point so that covers the 5th weeknight.

My 3 favourites would be:

Spinach quiche

Pasta with prawns (stirred together with a packet of strained tomatoes, some cream and maybe peas) and

potato salad with frankfurters or hard-boiled eggs.

TrixieBakes - do you use fresh or tinned tomatoes in your shakshuka? And do you just make it up as you go or do you have a favourite recipe?
I used to make something like this years ago but haven’t for ages.
