What are your 3 ‘go to’ family suppers?

I made dinner last night and got to thinking of my usual favourite suppers that I make on a fairly regular basis. Nothing fancy (as for a special occasion) just ordinary dinners.

Mine are:

1. Chilli & rice
2. Hungarian goulash a la Delia
3. a pork, apple, sage & onion dish topped with cheesy mash and served with green cabbage.

What are yours?

Urmstongran : I like the sound of your meal, pork, apple, sage and onion. Is the recipe on line?

A quick stir fry with garlic, ginger, chilli and loads of veggies - whatever I've got - plus a sachet of sauce and some chicken or prawns.

A macaroni/cauliflower cheese combo with lots of very cheesy sauce - extra cheese and breadcrumbs on top and whacked under the grill. Maybe some broccoli added if I have any.

Minced beef padded with onions, celery, mushrooms, carrots, all chopped very small, and some red lentils - usually batch cooked and used for sundry dishes, with additions as needed. .

I don't eat red meat and I'm allergic to onions, so mine are:

Tuna spaghetti. (My own recipe).
Sweet and sour turkey.
Cod in batter with Mediterranean vegetables, green beans and chips. (Make sure we only have chips once a week!)

I also do a stir-fry for Saturday lunch every week and my husband cooks the rest of the time - he is a Swiss-trained chef and a dab hand with a Sunday roast, which he enjoys cooking, even though he is Greek. Some Sundays we have roast duck with green beans, mash and carrots as a variation!

Urmstongran, I've bookmarked your pork recipe and will try it in the next couple of weeks. Don't think I can bring myself to call it the SOAP dish, though!grin.
Incidentally, OH always refers to Pan Haggerty as "that cheesy thing".

Urmstongran Thu 24-Jan-19 17:09:30

Excellent Scribbles - and what a good idea to bookmark! You’ll have to come back on afterwards & let us know whether you enjoyed it as much as we do!

Urmstongran Thu 24-Jan-19 17:13:57

No Retired65 it’s not on line - a neighbour wrote it out for me on blue notepaper 30 years ago and it became a family favourite!
I’ve set it out as you will see upthread if that helps?
Isn’t it amazing really how we build up our own repertoire of recipes - handed down, written up etc?

Butternut squash and leek lasagna
Halloumi in batter, (fried), chips and peas (called vegetarian fish and chips in the pub near by)
Paneer cheese and pea curry with egg fried rice (I cheat and use ready made curry)
Yes I am vegetarian

Scribbles Thu 24-Jan-19 17:54:48

Oh, willow, I've just made butternut squash & leek soup. It's an Ocado recipe and, when I first came across it, I thought what an odd combination it sounded but it's superb and we have it quite often.

Corned Beef Stew

Caribbean Pepperpot Beef

Jamaican Jerk Chicken with rice and peas

gulligranny Thu 24-Jan-19 18:44:03

Fish Pie (must have hard-boiled eggs in it!)

Mary Berry's Lasagne Express, which is made with sausagemeat, mushrooms and spinach and is incredibly easy to prepare, with no fiddly sauces.

Salmon with crispy orange breadcrumb topping served with new potatoes, peas & sweetcorn and a cold sauce of mayonnaise thinned out with orange juice. Might sound horrible but tastes lovely.

Urmstongran Thu 24-Jan-19 19:30:18

Now I really fancy the Lasagne Express a la Mary Berry gulligranny! I must look it up and make it soon.
I’ve got into a bit of a rut mealwise and am determined to try some different dishes - provided they are easy to prepare.
‘Life is too short to stuff a mushroom!’. Too true (even though I’ve actually done that in the past and they were delicious. Fiddly though - probably why I only ever did ‘em the once!
Who was it said that anyway??

glammagran Thu 24-Jan-19 19:30:59

Homemade curry selections - usually 3-4 dishes and all made from individual constituents- no curry powder and very spicy

Venison casserole with cheese and orange zest dumplings

Coq au vin

Think I’m a pretty good cook (can’t do pastry though)

Bathsheba Thu 24-Jan-19 19:35:15

Actually BBbevan I didn't mean low fat fromage frais - I meant low fat creme fraiche!!! I'm always doing that, putting ff on the shopping list when I mean cf; luckily my husband is used to it and always comes back with the right thing wink

BBbevan Thu 24-Jan-19 20:37:03

I think I interchange them also Bathsheba but full fat of course. My DH wouldn't know cf from ff .

Whitford8 Thu 24-Jan-19 20:55:28

1. Spag Bol 2. Chilli con carne 3. Curry

Shizam Thu 24-Jan-19 21:00:48

lazigirl I’m not vegetarian but often make a lentil Dahl recipe. Got it off Woman’s hour and have adapted. Slow fry chopped onion and carrot for a while to soften (now I’ve finally got a microwave, stick carrots in there for a bit, as they take ages). Separately cook red lentils, skim off scum. To veg, add chopped fresh tomatoes, couple of small chillis, garlic, tomato paste, cumin, paprika, any spice you fancy. Add in lentils with the water they’re in. Cook down. Add salt once they’re cooked. Serve with yogurt, pittas etc.

Overthehills Thu 24-Jan-19 21:19:36

Urmstongran - I think it was Shirley Conran.
1. Shepherds Pie
2. Quorn Lasagne
3. Sausage Casserole (must be made with out local butcher’s sausages)
All served with lots of veg.
Looking at these I realise that this is the winter selection - very different in summer.

Retired65 Thu 24-Jan-19 21:23:52

Urmstongran. Thanks I have found it.

Nanabilly Thu 24-Jan-19 21:27:00

In no particular order..
Toad in the hole with farm shop Cumberland sausages
Roast chicken leftovers with salad and proper chips
Roast dinner ..our family favourite is lamb

BradfordLass72 Thu 24-Jan-19 21:44:25

All these sound delicious but this size of meal wouldn't work for me so late in the day. My main meal, of the things you suggest (stir fry with prawns is a particular favourite) is at noon. I don't usually eat after 4pm and then it's a small thing, bagle with cream cheese and spring onion perhaps.
Like JessK I absolutely LOVE Cornish pasties but they have to be the genuine things. I learned to make them when I lived in Cornwall and nothing less will do.

Urmstongran Thu 24-Jan-19 22:37:36

Thank you Overthehills I think you’re right!

BlueSapphire Thu 24-Jan-19 22:44:37

Difficult to choose three but I suppose the ones I make most often are:

Curry, chicken or turkey
Hotpot
Steak, baked potato and onion rings
And couldn't miss out a nice roast dinner!

annep Thu 24-Jan-19 23:09:19

Shizam your lentil dahl sounds lovely and healthy too. Could I leave out the chillies?

Well as I have M.E. and stomach not great husband usually does dinner/supper. and we have to watch what we eat. So its pretty simple. Small amount of carbs plus 3 veg plus protein- salmon fresh tuna chicken turkey steak ( husband) . Once a week we have a bad evening- usually pizza garlic bread etc. Very boring . When I can I like to do risotto, beef/ red wine casserole, veg lasagne.

annep Thu 24-Jan-19 23:16:47

Our lazy meal when needed is fish fingers oven chips and H baked beans. love it.

BradfordLass72 Fri 25-Jan-19 04:24:55

Now I'm hungry!

I had carrot soup for my supper (I still call it tea).
Saute peeled and chopped carrots in butter, add stock (I used vegetable) just enough to cover the carrots comfortably if you like your soup thick.
Blend when cooked.
If I do this as a starter for guests I'll have cream and croutons available (my grandson like the Bagel Bites).
