Are you stocking up at home in case Brexit means shortages?

How much money wise and amount?

What are you stocking up on?

The home-made cider, plum wine and Chateau Plonksville 1918 should see us through, breeze.
grin

Joking aside, we have noticed the farmland surrounding us has all been put down to cereal growing this year whereas previously there was a rotation of cereal, vegetables and salad crops.

We can only assume they are either concerned about available labour or they are fed up with the supermarkets squeezing the life out of their profits.

Mmm merlot be careful, you may end up with me as your lodger grin

I have noticed the fields opposite us have changed from herbs to rape seed. It seems it's more lucrative. We used to walk our dogs up the side of the herb fields (the scent was lovely) and there would be workers sitting harvesting them. There are no workers now. Just machinery.

I will add though, this happened long before Brexit, before you all get excited.

I seem to be inadvertently stockpiling loo rolls and carrots. confused. The loo rolls were 24 Andrex for £6 a few weeks ago, so I felt I couldn't leave them on the supermarket shelf. They're currently adorning my bedroom floor as I don't have anywhere to keep so many loo rolls.

I bought root veg to make casserole over the weekend and then when I got home I found I already had a pack and half of carrots! Carrot chutney, anyone? grin

The Government has created a new Minister for Food David Rutley MP to Defra to try and manage the shortages that will happen after we leave the EU.

We import so much from the EU & even if we find deals later we will have a few months of delays at channels ports as everything will have be checked as it comes through. At present they are just passed if they are from the EU

Same with pharmaceuticals, if we Leave it is bound to cause shortages as many are made in the EU. Even if we manage a deal they will still take longer to reach us.

Lots will change after we Leave, food will be the biggest impact on us as our farmers are going to lose their subsides and many are talking of giving up, they will be working for nothing. Somehow we need to ensure we are prepared because the Government in particular Theresa May has refused to allow preparations in good time.

We are expected to stock up with enough tins, dried foods, tea, coffee, water, etc for a few months, baby milk, foods, anything that is imported. Many businesses are failing in this country & will not be able to continue after leaving in March. They have appealed to the Govt but it falls on deaf ears so the public will be taking the full force of the government incompetent preparations.

The Govt expects problems and is getting the Military ready, at least a thousand in Northern Ireland and the rest throughout the UK. They must be expecting riots because of food & medicine shortages. Goodness knows what will happen to those already in severe poverty, those who do not have spare cash to buy ahead & the very elderly. The planning does mean hospitals will get food first.

This apparently is what the Government says we voted for. Our supermarkets will be closing without eough stock to make it worth while for them

I've converted a small room into an extra pantry and buying extras every week for the last months to add to this emergency supply. We did it during the Cold War but finally didn't need it then but we are facing something of our own making now and it makes sense to prepare.

Pretending it will not happen will not make it go away. If a miracle stops it then I hope I can donate it to food banks. But common sense says that if we leave the EU our food and medical supplies will be severely interrupted for at least some weeks.

Well I shall be moving in with merlot visiting cornergran and off to yours SueDonim for...……

Carrot soup! What did you think I was going to say grin

Well she is stockpiling loo rolls!

It's such a nonsense. Honestly, reminds of the time I went to a party and they were showing off their 'bunker' in case the bomb went off. It wouldn't have protected a hamster.

We won't starve. We will survive Brexit. Whether I will survive the nonsensical alarmist ridiculousness of this time I'm not sure. (weeps into, currently available piece of kitchen roll)

chrissie13 Sat 26-Jan-19 15:48:31

We always have a good stock of most things due to buying things when on offer, but won't be buying anything extra.

aggie Sat 26-Jan-19 15:50:05

Why stock up with stuff you will donate to foodbank ! I can sort of understand saving stuff you can use in all eventuallities , but my goodness stuffing a -room- so you can donate it .................

BlueBelle Sat 26-Jan-19 15:55:53

Oh my word Endre you have converted a room into an extra pantry?? Never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life not much common sense showing from your post I m afraid it’s people like you that will MAKE the shortages

The "project fear" brigade have done their job well . There is no project fear, the Government hid over 50 impact studies from us & our MPs so we had no idea the devastation that Leaving the EU would cause.

Some of them are worse than we thought, no one in their right minds would support such insanity but the truth was hidden

Since Christmas these impact studies are available (or Theresa May was going to be held in contempt of Parliament again!) They tell you that project fear does NOT exist. it is the truth the brexiteers were hiding from us.

The Govt is not promising any subsides to our farmers, it only helps what is decides to class as "essentials" like medicine. Farmers and food producers who remain in business will have to charge much more for the product, milk, eggs, cheese, yoghurts or work for nothing. Likewise vegetables and fruit.

There are many sites that advise on what and how to stock up on, many families have been preparing for months or a last minute dash panic dash would cause problems.

The Govt is stocking up in massive storage outfits throughout the country, we are expected to do the same. It has created a Minister for Food David Rutley MP who might be in charge of any rationing.

We can't expect to be nannied out of situations we have caused ourselves.

winifred01 Sat 26-Jan-19 16:12:01

In ww2 when I was a child, my mother had a cupboard filled with huge bars of household soap(not available now). Dozens of tins of white beans, nothing else. What was behind that thinking?

Jalima1108 Sat 26-Jan-19 16:33:41

It's a shame if we can't get the household soap now Winifred - it's better than anything else for getting stains out before items go in the washing machine!

Do you have any left?

Kapitan Sat 26-Jan-19 16:38:06

Sure thing, I have stocked up with beer and spirits, enough to last for a year. Hopefully that will suffice.

sweetcakes Sat 26-Jan-19 16:39:28

Considering half the population doesn't know how to cook from scratch and so long as McDonald's, KFC and the rest of the takeaway's are still up and running we should survive!! ? And as for wine buy British and British beer.
But no I won't be stock piling.

Lioness68 Sat 26-Jan-19 16:41:58

We buy in bulk from Costco every month and have done for years. I have no intention of doing anything differently. Anything we don't buy in bulk is bought weekly. Fresh foods that is. So no, I won't be stockpiling anything. As others have said - it is just plain stupid.

farview Sat 26-Jan-19 16:44:30

Stockpiling.... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

Harris27 Sat 26-Jan-19 16:52:21

I've read some funny comments on gransnet but this one is hilarious!

BlueBelle Sat 26-Jan-19 17:08:18

We won’t starve at worse we ll have less choice for a while but I’m still keeping my fingers firmly crossed we stay in

Half the worlds starves while we throw away half our food

Christalbee Sat 26-Jan-19 17:09:36

Nothing! Never even thought of it!! If you can't get it, adapt...

nananina Sat 26-Jan-19 17:12:41

Endre I think you are the only enlightened person on this thread. She is quoting from what the Govt is saying - I have also seen a govt site giving a list of foods that we should stockpile. Why would there be huge warehouses crammed with food that is being stalled and it' full so they are having to turn retailers away. I think there will be food but it will be scarce and expensive and we will see queues like after the 2nd world war.

I haven't done anything yet but intend to stockpile. If the worst doesn't happen - no problem -we eat some and send some to the foodbank. My main worry is my medication and my GP says it isn't on the list of drugs as it is not used by many people. I have order some off the internet - ok it's not altogether safe but I've done it beforewith no problem. I just cannot manage without this med. There must be thousands in the same boat. I notice water is on the list so presumably that is going to be in short supply.

I think people in this country are so used to supermarkets bulging with goods (many varieties of the same product) and simply can't imagine anything will change. I think they're wrong if there is a no deal Brexit, so many things will change. We won't be allowed into EU countries without a Visa and won't be able to live or work there. Some of the idiots who voted Leave, did so to protect the borders from migrants, not realising they will be migrants in an EU country.

OK some people think stock piling is stupid, but if we absolutely know by mid Match we are crashing out of the EU, people will be going mad to stockpile - there will be people "fighting" in supermarkets.

jendean Sat 26-Jan-19 17:19:13

PECS Sat 26-Jan-19 17:36:12
