Are you stocking up at home in case Brexit means shortages?

How much money wise and amount?

What are you stocking up on?

BlueBelle Sat 26-Jan-19 17:39:34

That’s four jars Jendean
I think people who are stockpiling are selfish and the ones that will cause a problem If people are fighting in the aisles of supermarkets Nananina then I won’t be amongst them You seem to forget most of us were born in or just after the war and know how to manage without the bulging supermarket shelves you talk about I lived through a childhood without bananas, many sweets , fizzy drinks Chinese restaurants and MacDs
As old Gloria said ‘I will survive’

Stockpiling is the height of selfishness - its Brexit not World War III! I am sure we will cope with temporary shortages of non-UK products, if in fact that happens!

I think we will find that on March 29 the shops will be stocked a bit like Christmas, some things sold out and others fine.

I generally have rice, potatoes and pasta in the house, and some tinned fish, corned beef, baked beans and chopped tomato in the house.

Los of things come in to food shops from chilie and Peru and Kenya that I don't buy at the moment. I hope I can by english produce. It will be a very interesting time as others have said much like the millenium.

That is the most extreme end of ridiculousness I've ever heard of. Shameful and bonkers.

GabriellaG54 Sat 26-Jan-19 18:06:31

I don't even use my freezer and have switched it off . I can easily shop daily if I so wish and there are no months or years old packets of unidentifiable foodstuffs lurking inside my fridge. I much prefer shopping as soon as I know their recent deliveries, usually twice daily, are on the shelves.
Shopping every day is exercise too. I nip out at 07.30 before or after my run or cycle ride.

toscalily Sat 26-Jan-19 18:08:18

endre123 I am astonished that you actually have a room that you are filling with things that you say if not needed you will then donate to charity, bonkers.

If there are shortages and I doubt there will be, then it will do me good to run down my cupboards and freezer. There must be stuff in there I’ve had for years.

Washerwoman Sat 26-Jan-19 18:24:21

I have loads of tinned tomatoes. But only because I double clicked on a food order without realising I already had plenty .Stockpiling -no way.Just my usual well stocked cupboards which I like to have so I can cobble together meals without going shopping if I'm not in the mood.Over on Mumsnet the end of the world is nigh and some serious 'preppers buying in what sounds like ridiculous amounts. But some of the stuff they are worrying about being unavailable are luxuries to me,not essentials.Conerns about medicines I can accept,bu if I can't get Italian olive oil the local farm shop sells a great rape seed oil.The hysteria is bonkers. And as Jalima said earlier loads of big fat pigeons in the garden - I may have to eat my words .Or one of them !

Lily65 Sat 26-Jan-19 18:24:35

Aren't they putting the whole sorry show on hold for a few months?

Lily65 Sat 26-Jan-19 18:25:38

Gabriella how do you manage the run, the cycling and the riding? Must be quite full on for an old un

Jalima1108 Sat 26-Jan-19 18:26:07

We do have a freezer full - it has lots of home-grown produce in it.

live7 Sat 26-Jan-19 18:35:02

Nothing. Feels a bit selfish ..surely causing a shortage and leading to others going without while they have more stuff stashed away than they need.

endre123 Sat 26-Jan-19 18:39:12

Nearly everyone I know is putting stuff away! We know there's going to be a food shortage and I don't need ignorance or rudeness because I'm saying something which is out there, the reality.

These are the most dangerous times we have lived since WW2 and all because a lot of people believed huge lies and voted to Leave the EU. They brought disaster on top of everyone. At least let the sensible ones say what the majority are doing, of course people are stocking up on stuff. No one is going to bring extra food to you if becomes rationed. At least some of us will have a bit of variety.

You can check up google if there's a new Minister for Food. We never had one before last Christmas and there's a reason why. The Govt expects food shortages.

The most "bonkers" we have seen is people voting for this "bonkers Leave". Unless they think it's worth years of severe austerity & making it worse by telling people not to prepare.

As humans we have always kept stores of food in case of bad weather. During the later years of Cold War (1985-1991) we were given advice what to put away, some even dug nuclear shelters in their gardens.

This is something we have brought on ourselves and it will change Britain forever. At least we can try and not be starved by the Brexiteers.

I have converted the smallest bedroom into a storeroom, everything packed correctly, dated. I've included bathroom stuff, toilet rolls, bottles of water.

I think if you search what people are doing they are like myself regular donors to Food Banks and if Brexit doesn't happen then the food will not go to waste. When society all around us looks at if it's losing touch with civilisation the least we can do is try not to be a burden ourselves and help the most vulnerable

I'm not sure how stocking up with a few things now can cause shortages. Surely it's panic buying at the last minute that does that?

jendean Sat 26-Jan-19 18:46:10

Just saying........ we have spent quite some time in Spain, most recently southern Andalusia and am aware of the huge amount of plastic covered land which is now devoted to crops, tomatoes, beans, salad crops courgettes, soft fruit, etc and outside broccoli, cauliflowers, potatoes etc etc and all manner of other fruits. Said to be 100 square miles grown under plastic and very much EU funded.( I am also aware of the slave like conditions the north African workers have to endure to work there, having watched the TV programme) However my point is, so much comes to UK from there and with the Brexit problems there must be shortages and higher prices, due to difficulties in transport for perishable crops. We cannot stockpile for this eventuality but we will be more reliant on eating what is in season here . This is not a bad thing at all but inevitably shortages create demand which will result in higher prices. So anyone with access to a garden or allotment should consider growing their own. Just saying

Camelotclub Sat 26-Jan-19 18:46:48

We've stocked up on loo rolls, kitchen rolls, M&S tea bags and paracetamol/ibuprofen. Oh and batteries, all made in the EU. But not enough for local shops to notice!

Camelotclub Sat 26-Jan-19 18:47:29

And I am renewing my prescriptions every 3 weeks instead of 4 but my excuse is I need heart medication and really can't afford to run out of it or am in trouble.

merlotgran Sat 26-Jan-19 18:49:16

endrel, Surely there will be water in our taps? hmm

lemongrove Sat 26-Jan-19 18:53:02

endrel......you are joking, right??

sarahellenwhitney Sat 26-Jan-19 19:20:23

As a, far too many cups a day for my own good , instant coffee drinker I recently purchased six tins. Why? because they were retailing at less than half price .Too good an offer to miss.

"I'm not sure how stocking up with a few things now can cause shortages. Surely it's panic buying at the last minute that does that?"

If we had a 'like' button, I would simply have clicked on it instead of copying and pasting in order to say that I agree with this ☺

Personally, I am not stockpiling, but if there do turn out to be shortages, these stockpilers will not need to panic buy, meaning that what is available then will go further, which will be better for the rest of us.

Doreen5 Sat 26-Jan-19 19:39:20

No stockpiling in this house. Will adapt if necessary.

GillT57 Sat 26-Jan-19 20:05:50

Yes been buying additional items each week. Ground coffee, loo roll, dog and cat food for example. This is not stockpiling just sensible precautions as I do not wish to be in the supermarkets when all the optimistic and deluded people realise the shops are not as well stocked as usual and then the panic buying begins. I always have a good larder anyway with flour and lentils and tins and plenty of frozen veg.

GabriellaG54 Sat 26-Jan-19 20:11:22

Oh Lily65
There are many GNers my age or near enough, even older, who still ride/run. As for running, my exes Christmas present to me was a running buddy for a year. I aim (if possible) to do one of the marathons in late Autumn and there are hundreds of people older than me who run in them.
I have a second hand (not a racing) bike and enjoy riding locally on one of the many nature trails and cycle routes or getting the train and ferry to Ryde in warmer weather.
I either ride or cycle according to the weather but I do run daily unless it's ice or snow. Rain doesn't bother me.
Age is a number. You'll be an 'old un' one day if you haven't reached maturity yet. grin

What exotic fruit and veg come from Europe ?????
