Kartoffel chips in M&S.

Returning from the hairdressers today, I treated myself to a packet of low fat, sour cream and chive crisps.
Whilst idly munching, I turned the packet over to read the full list of ingredients and noted they were made in DENMARK.
Why why why?
I was also wearing M&S knickers at the time, which are made in Bangladesh.
???

As a purist may I point out that the plural of “Kartoffel” is “Kartoffeln” and that the crisps were probably “Kartoffelchips”(one word) in Danish, certainly in German.

Not to worry, if Brexit ends in no deal, we Danes will probably stop exporting anything to Britain because of customs dues.

If you want to buy British try Fairfield farms crisps. They're made in my area and grow the spuds themselves. Big range available even lentil crisps and hot crisps. All gluten free for coeliacs like me.

Seabrook crisps are my favourite too. Takes me back to covertly munching them on the Sammy Ledgard school bus. We were not supposed to eat in public in school uniform.

I can recommend Lidl Deluxe Hand-Cooked crisps. Made from British potatoes and absolutely delicious!!

Tyrells is another British crisp maker. They do a salt free one called ‘Naked Crisps’ so you could munch them minus your M & S knickers. I live in The Fens where they grow tons and tons of spuds - a big percentage of which go to the Walkers crisp factory.

I try and buy British where possible but having knowingly bought Italian tortellini stuffed with chicken & chorizo I was horrified to discover the chicken part of it had come from Thailand. (shock) This was bought from a supermarket I don’t normally frequent, but it seems they are all doing it now. Note to self: read every label.

Walkers crisps are made in Leicester in Europe’s largest food plant.

Gabriella54. Very curious if you voted for Brexshit? Are you not aware of where most of your fresh produce comes from? You’ll be sorry they do after Brexit. Hope you like swede and leeks and cabbage abd tinned spam!

MawBroon Wed 20-Feb-19 13:06:01

123coco surely swedes come from Sweden, just as brussels come from Belgium ?

Ooh Moggie don't encourage me now! There's a Lidl in walking distance from me, (and an M&S Foodhall). I'm meant to go on a ten minute walk each day to stay fit and keep my weight down. I mustn't make excuses.
Crisps are my downfall, you see. Cakes and sausage rolls, too.

I think it is incumbent upon us all to support our own country whether we are in or out of the EU. We should grow what we eat and eat what we grow first and foremost. We should make what we need and think hard about what we don't need. If we find we need to import then let's support the growers in the poorer areas of the world. Eating British crisps in big pants made in Bradford could become a national pastime.

I like Lidl Deluxe Hand-Cooked crisps & don't forget Mackie's crisps, they even do a Haggis favour although I have not tried that one.

gmelon Wed 20-Feb-19 14:30:57

I have been buying Mackies crisps from Lidl. They are a Scottish company.
I'm addicted to the plain salted ones.

gmelon Wed 20-Feb-19 14:32:05

We tried the haggis ones at Christmas.
Unfortunately no one liked them.

toscalily Wed 20-Feb-19 14:38:48

gmelon Good job I wasn't tempted then grin

I only eat Tayto crisps which are made in Northern Ireland, near where I live!

aggie Wed 20-Feb-19 15:31:57

Tayto are up the road from me , their cheese and onion are legendary smile

madmum38 Wed 20-Feb-19 16:11:21

I always liked the Smiths bovril crisps but Smiths has disappeared from any shop I know

maddyone Wed 20-Feb-19 16:34:33

Crisps made in Denmark, knickers madein Bangladesh. I know and understand the arguments for free trade and for supporting developing countries with trade, but the the other side of the coin is the carbon footprint. Bringing in goods from abroad that could have been made in Britain is adding a huge carbon footprint to the world. That will be the legacy our grandchildren inherit.

Telly Wed 20-Feb-19 17:02:25

Tyrrells crisps are made in England!

Maggiemaybe Wed 20-Feb-19 17:05:09

I find myself looking for locally made goods these days, and it seems there are more on offer. I really want to reduce my carbon footprint, for the sake of my grandchildren. And I won’t be limited when it comes to fruit and veg, 123coco, as we grow many of ours ourselves. I’m certainly not drawn to buy from EU poly tunnel wastelands, where cheap labour is bought in from poorer countries to work in abysmal conditions.

Maggiemaybe Wed 20-Feb-19 17:10:15

I’ve just been spurred on by this thread to check out our local M & S crisps (security alert, suspicious woman in aisle 3 fondling packet snacks!). I’m pleased to say that 90% of them were made in the UK. I’m not too happy about the change from Dyson hand-driers to Mitsubishi in the ladies’ loos though. sad

trendygran Wed 20-Feb-19 17:51:21

Have to agree Greyduster. I went to look at jeans in M and S the other day as I saw they had new styles in. Of course they had none in my size( 16 regular ) in the one I might have bought. Long live jeans from Bonmarche-they fit perfectly and are cheaper. The leg length is better too.

Nanniejc1 Wed 20-Feb-19 18:35:29

We should all be buying British where we can, there are lots of small businesses that rely on local trade.I use my local butcher,I like to know where my meat comes from.
