I grew up in a household that was never without a jar of Branston Pickle and for all of my 49 years of marriage we have also always had a jar of this delicious pickle in the kitchen. (Although my husband can't stand it!)
What food items have you always got in your cupboard or fridge?

gillyknits Mon 18-Mar-19 12:39:41

Philadelphia, Branston, H.P. and oxo cubes!

Marmite and peanut butter. My husband has to have Branston pickle. I can’t be in the same room with it. The smell makes me gag!

I seem to have a bit of everything in my fridge/cupboards because 'things go with things'. For example, I would have brown sauce if I had a fried egg or a bacon sandwich but I would have red sauce with poached eggs. Worcester sauce with anything mince related. English mustard with roasts or sausages. Salad cream with peas confused I know, it just seems to go! Mayo with potato salad. BBQ sauce with chicken and coleslaw. Mint sauce with lamb. Apple sauce with pork. Horseradish with beef or mackerel. I have jam, marmalade, red current, cranberry, lingonberry for Swedish meatballs. Every kind of mustard. Branston for cold meat. Piccalilli because DH likes that with cold meat. Gherkins for fish and chips or tartare sauce. Goodness me, and that was just off the top of my head. I have a whole shelf, two door compartments and two shelves in my cupboards dedicated to herbs/spices/condiments.

If I had to choose just one, I'd choose, erm… argh.. don't make me! Grief I need to attend C.A. (condiments anonymous!)

Tea is absolutely vital. Just once I have run out of tea and felt hysteria rising - nine o clock in the evening, had to rush to a friend to get some for the morning.

Grammaretto Had you asked the owners/agents of the holiday cottage to provide a few starter 'essentials' tea coffee milk etc which you would then reimburse them for.?Living in 'holiday let' south west I have friends who let out property and they advise that IF asked beforehand will make sure their are a few' starters' in both fridge and cupboard.
Maybe a hotel holiday for you, next time ???????

How did Branston become Bra stop?

Saggi Mon 18-Mar-19 13:09:47

Branston pickle right up there number one....my husband and me love it. Also never without salad cream or mustard and of course cream crackers...I live em all.

Greyduster Mon 18-Mar-19 13:14:54

Rooibos tea, marmight, good wholegrain mustard go with me wherever I travel. I don’t drink a lot of tea, but that is the only tea I can drink.

Aepgirl thank god you told me Bra stop was an error. I thought there was a condiment I'd missed. Phew. smile

Can't seem to live without, HP sauce, hot English mustard from Asda, salad cream and mayonnaise. Also salted real butter, bread and eggs. Not a very healthy mixture.

Yorkshire tea (though I live in Lancashire) Milk. Shredded Wheat and Cornflakes. Butter from small UK farms, when possible. Branston, Colman's mustard and Hellman's Mayo for my son (I hate all of them!) A fresh crusty loaf (my weakness) Gale's Lemon Curd. Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate, for the rare occasions when I can't sleep. Definitely lots of oranges and satsumas, plus tins of Sainsbury's Grapefruit Salad (delicious!) I have a big bowl of them for breakfast every morning.

Daddies brown sauce for me - had it since a child and couldn’t be without it in my cupboard. DH is a Branson pickle warrior but only the original thick cut not the small chunk ‘rubbish’ ! confused

Sheilasue Mon 18-Mar-19 15:44:34

I try not to be with Morrison's dark chocolate spread... love it on buttered toast ?
I like to have the gubbings for cake making in the cupboard and fridge, just incase I fancy it or have visitors.
Brastop is actually a brilliant website for ladies with bigger breasts..
