Apple Thingy

Of course it's not called that really but I can't for the life of me remember its real name. This is what I mean:
Cook apples and place in dish, then make cake mixture: butter, sugar SR Flour and egg, pour it over and bake. This is a dessert eaten with custard, not a cake.

I was told this is Apple Charlotte but isn't that made with buttered bread in a mould?

Nor is it Apple Cake because this, to me at any rate, is vanilla-almond cake mixture, 1/2 of it placed in the bottom of a cake pan, covered in very thinly sliced apples, the fruit then covered with more cake mix and baked. This is an actual cake.

But what's the other, just apples covered-with-cake-mix thing called?

I shan't sleep until I know its name grin

I just call it Apple sponge it’s never had another name in our house.

Lindylou51 Thu 23-May-19 08:07:59

Eve's pudding

What lindy said. But with cream not custard!

SueH49 Thu 23-May-19 08:11:21

Apple sponge in my house and eaten with either cream or custard - or even both!

I’d forgotten about ‘apple sponge’ which is what we always called it. Must make again. Can also make with rhubarb which is in season at the moment.

I've always called it Apple sponge - my mum's go to if she couldn't think what else to have for pudding - we always seemed to have cooking apples in the larder or rhubarb in the garden but I'd go as far as having it with cream, custard or ice cream !

That is Eve's pudding in our house. Lovely with custard.

ayse Thu 23-May-19 09:41:48

Yummy ?

BradfordLass72 Fri 24-May-19 03:18:02

YES! Lindylou51 and MiniMoo Eve's Pudding is the name I was looking for.

I often add pears or raspberries to the apple as well.

My son prefers custard with it, I like cream or mascarpone, my dil asks for yoghurt and the dgs wants ice cream.

My DM used to make what sounds like that and we called it Apple Jonathan. I have no idea why, but that was certainly its name. We had it with milk rather than custard, and cream was never just for ordinary puddings, just for special occasions.

Apple Eve, I believe or Eve's pudding.

mimismo Fri 24-May-19 10:27:08

Apple upside down cake in our house.

Kim19 Fri 24-May-19 10:31:31

Only ever known it as Eve's pudding.

Davida1968 Fri 24-May-19 10:32:44

The pudding that is apples covered in a sponge mix is definitely Eve's Pudding. I learned to make this at school, back in the 1960s....

BradfordLass72 Fri 24-May-19 10:40:32

Davida1968 Me too, once I'd finished the blue gingham cookery apron in Sewing. grin

Dillyduck Fri 24-May-19 10:40:37

Definitely Eve's pudding, that's what it was called when I did Domestic Science 50 years ago! Really scrummy, haven't made one for ages, so thanks for the reminder. My favourite versions were with raspberries, blackberries, or loganberries sprinkled over the apple. Extra scrummy!

nannypiano Fri 24-May-19 11:25:12

Well there is a pineapple upside down cake, so I suppose there is an apple one too. Why not?

Matriarch Fri 24-May-19 11:35:43

This is Eve’s pudding . Tastes lovely with a sprinkle of cinnamon in the cake mixture . Always serve ours with cream .

HillyN Fri 24-May-19 12:19:26

I keep a bag of frozen berries in the freezer and if family come and I need a pudding quickly I put some in a dish, microwave to thaw them a bit, top with sponge mixture and bake.
I used to make a crumble but my family all said they prefer the sponge!

mimismo Fri 24-May-19 12:53:19

I take back my first post. On reflection it was Eve's pudding. The upside down one was pineapple!

Urmstongran Fri 24-May-19 13:19:36

Eve’s pudding.
