Can anyone tell me a method for reheating or keeping warm, mashed potatoes?

Thank you

Pop it in a covered bowl in the microwave. How long for depends on the amount of mashed potato needing heating.

On the other hand you could turn it into colcannon or bubble and squeak, which is cooked in a frying pan.

This is from wikihow,

Use a pan on your stovetop. First, pour some cream. Bring it to a simmer. Stir your mashed potatoes into the cream evenly. Continue to stir until the potatoes are heated through. If needed, add more cream and wait for it to come to a simmer, then stir it into the potatoes.[1]
Depending on the amount of potatoes you’re reheating and the size of the pan, it’s best to start off with too little cream than too much. At the very least, use enough to coat the bottom of the pan.
Use a food thermometer to check the potatoes’ internal temperature; for health reasons, the potatoes should reach at least 165º before they’re safe to eat.[2]

I've reheated mash in a frying pan, with a little butter in the pan add the potato and keep moving it around until it's hot. You don't want to actually fry it.

My mother used to use an ice cream scoop and put the blobs of mashed potato on a tray - tiny knob of butter on each one and under the grill. Came out like duchesse potatoes - my father preferred them to roasted ones.
She put butter in the potatoes when mashing them and would sometimes then pop a tray load in the freezer - the butter enabled the mash to freeze OK.

I love it fried too. Mix it with: mustard / onions/ spring onions / cabbage / sprouts / garlic / horseradish

Yum x

I don't usuallly mash until the last possible minute. Drained boiled spuds stay hotter longer in the pan they were cooked in (heavy base, tight fitting lid) than if you mash them straight away. If that's not possible I put it in a dish, fork over the top for crispy bits with a bit of butter and bung it in the oven.

Keep mash warm in the oven and there's never any leftovers here!

Grannyknot Sun 13-Oct-19 21:24:33

I keep mashed potato warm in my slow cooker (on low).

sue421 Sun 13-Oct-19 21:25:56

Use frozen mash! For me frozen mash has changed my life!

SirChenjin Sun 13-Oct-19 21:47:44

Me too sue and I’m not embarrassed in the slightest grin Got to be Aunt Bessie’s and I add butter and warm milk to the mash - lovely ?

I always have some frozen mash for emergencies or far too tired days but like home-mashed King Edwards the best.

I freeze what the family refer to as potato lumps. Aren't they sweet? Basically potato mashed with butter (no milk) and the usual pepper, salt too if you like it. Either use ice cream scoop or simply tablespoons of potato put on a baking tray and browned in the oven. Open freeze, transfer to freezer containers to store and re-heat in the oven when needed. No reason not to freeze before browning, I just find it easier to brown first. In spite of the sarcastic comments the family. love them. Me? I don’t eat potato grin.

Keep warm in the oven. But bubble and squeak is the best tastiest way to reheat. You've put me in the notion Monica.

This arose because we had sausage casserole and I hadn't any bought mashed potatoes in the freezer. I buy the mash from Sainsbury's chiller cabinets but I will try frozen.

My question was because I hate doing things for a meal at the last minute.

Any leftovers will be used for bubble and squeak - the best reason for having mash!!

Just as an aside Mr C has developed a liking for those little frozen jacket potatoes. Can’t recall why I bought the first lot, probably no suitable ‘real’ ones. They certainly look good and he says are tasty, cook quickly too.

I loved mashed potatoes and always make double the quantity so we can have them fried the next day!

I too buy mashed potatoes from the Sainsburys chiller cabinet. I always have one or two in the freezer but think I will investigate Aunt Bessie's frozen mash. Especially for Boxing Day when it seems there is going to be a lot of us! smile

Aunt Bessie's anything is gorgeous. We had her parsnips yesterday. I had forgotten what parsnips taste like. Yum!

glammanana Mon 14-Oct-19 10:26:42

There should be a chiller/freezer specially for Aunt Bessies products they are delicious.

SirChenjin Mon 14-Oct-19 10:33:09

I agree glamanana - AB makes the world a better place imo

Luckygirl Mon 14-Oct-19 10:45:48

Frozen mash is wonderful - a revelation! Who needs to peel potatoes!?

Making bubble and squeak from leftover mash is great.

kittylester Mon 14-Oct-19 13:59:59

I haven't checked out her products lately but last time I looked Auntie Bessie was a bit fond of adding flour to her frozen chips. Not good if you are gf or coeliac.

glammanana Mon 14-Oct-19 14:05:57

kitty I must check that out I hadn't noticed but to be honest I have not tried the chips at all,I do prefer homemade chips.

SirChenjin Mon 14-Oct-19 14:13:22

A lot of food producers do that kitty - DD has to be very careful what she buys and I think AB is one of the guilty parties unfortunately. The cheaper own brand chips seem to be ok for some reason.
