Any professional Aldi shoppers here? What's good and what's not? Is the fruit and veg OK?

Both Aldi and Lidl are a bit far away for me to use regularly but I do go occasionally and like different aspects of both.
As others have said the bread section is better at Lidl, I don't eat meat so can't comment on that.
I love Aldis muesli, full of fruit and nuts and they do a fabulous salmon en croute for £3.99, serves four and is good enough to serve at a dinner party. It's in the freezer section, well worth trying.

I hope this link will brighten up your January Aldi and Lidl shopping, Gransnetters!

I was a Sainsbury's shopper but since retiring has changed to Aldi to make my pension stretch further. Wow if only I had known before, there meat and veg are super. I could have saved myself hundreds when I was working and could have added more to my pension pot. My favourite product besides the steaks is their 'Potato Gratin' whose appearance is not appealing but the taste is delicous.

Both our 2 Aldis and our lldl have been either new builds or refurbished There are definitely no boxes or jumble they are Big open, clean, clear, bright and extremely well organised and set out you couldnt go to a nicer supermarket

guizqueen you should come to our new Aldi it makes Marks and Sparks look very old fashioned

Oh I wish they would stock Stollen throughout the year - and not just Xmas time

I love the stuff in the middle aisles at Lidl and Aldi and wouldn't describe it as 'tat'. I've bought excellent quality winter jackets for the GCs and ski wear. They had good quality wooden toys at Christmas this year, very reasonably priced.

I find Lidl staff are very helpful and patient with me, as I muddle through paying for different items with different cards, and the bags always seem to end up underneath the shopping that I need to pack into them.
Aldi is ok but they seem to be more expensive lately, with more big brand items, rather than their own cheaper versions. I prefer Lidl. very good quality, enough choice.
As for the weekly specials, many of the Lidl's I go to are city centre, so too small to have them. but where they do, what serendipitous fun, to go in for rolls and soup, and come out with a blow-up canoe, just in case.... and wonderful work shorts, which have been admired as fashion items !

Go Aldi or Lidl. Our local Sainsburys has recently undergone the most abysmal reorganising to incorporate other outlets. The supermarket looks as if someone threw all the departments into the air and planned it where they landed. I only spent £33 on groceries today and it took me an hour to navigate the store. Worse still I asked staff where to find two day to day products and they didn't know. I'm still livid and will go to the Lo Costs up the road for a more stress free shop. Also can use Asda or Tesco locally too.

If you have the time and inclination to go looking for them. The rest of us who prefer to pay less for good quality items and who can look past the cardboard boxes waiting to be unpacked are happy to shop at Lidl or Aldi.

I got a huge bag of carrots last week for 3p- no, not from Aldi. They weren't just any carrots, they were Marks and Spencer carrots. Bargains are to be found everywhere, and in much nicer places.

Can't stand Aldi or Lidl, with their jumble sale items (tat) in the middle aisle and everything in boxes looking like some backstreet warehouse. They may or maybe not a little cheaper, I can't say, but I prefer to pay a few pence more, have more choice and a far nicer experience.

Aldi shopper here too ... also sains and Tesco ... I pull and tweek but love Aldi
love the low shopping bill ... a god send for people setting at home etc ... and just great all round for more money in pocket lol

BlueBelle Fri 03-Jan-20 21:49:58

I like both Aldi and Lldl and my bill is about half
I can’t find anything wrong with the layout of either they are just long aisles like other supermarkets
Lldl is far better for the baking/ bread section otherwise both good

DoraMarr Fri 03-Jan-20 21:29:21

I forgot about the wine, it is very good! Also, the Aldi gin came out very well in a blind tasting.

If you enjoy the occasional pie, I recommend the Steak & Long Clawson Stilton pies, packs of 2 in the frozen section.

We have also recently been enjoying the venison steaks (again in the frozen section) although rather than eating them just as a steak, I braise them.

Delicious, and a low cholesterol meat.

Charleygirl5 Fri 03-Jan-20 15:32:35

I do like Lidl but my two stores are rather out of the way but when I make the effort I, like others am pleasantly surprised at the till. I love the frozen section- food I have never heard of before which is delicious. Fish and meat is very good quality- I just do not like the layout of Lidl- I could improve it for them.

The two Aldis are also not convenient, both are quite small but I still like their produce. Wine is very good value.

Calendargirl Fri 03-Jan-20 15:19:11

No Lidl or Aldi close to us, so use Tesco and occasionally Sainsbury’s. If one opened near us, would certainly give it a go, but am not keen enough on grocery shopping to travel 15 miles away even if it’s cheaper.

phoenix Fri 03-Jan-20 15:12:34

We have been known to enjoy the odd bottle glass of Cava. Both Aldi and Lidl are around the same price (£5.25 ish?) but after a bit of research, Mr P and I prefer the Lidl one.

midnightschild Fri 03-Jan-20 12:35:34

I use both Aldi and Lidl. I prefer Aldi’s fruit and vegetables but Lidl’s meat. I find a lot of their ‘own’ brands to be better than the known brands eg I think Lidl’s Baked Beans and soups are better than Heinz. Both do great booze at excellent prices.

Lovemybed Fri 03-Jan-20 12:17:51

Like Esspee I prefer Lidl. Their Skyr yogurt, fresh baguettes
and flowers are great value.

inkycog Fri 03-Jan-20 11:42:43

Wow, Cleo, thanks for that link.

CleoPanda Fri 03-Jan-20 11:27:47

Aldi in my town is fab.
There’s a huge thread that was started in summer 2019 that may interest you. It’s here: www.gransnet.com/forums/chat/1262568-Aldi-recommendation-please
All their chicken is UK bred and produced which pleases me immensely as many supermarkets stock Thai chicken. Not good for anyone’s carbon footprint?
