My parents had a fish and chip shop when I was a child and we always had scraps. Dad would go to Hartlepool for the fish every day we were open and the shop was renowned locally for the best fish n chips - his batter was delicious and he used the same recipe years later when they had a hotel!

We now use the award winning fish shop in Brid mentioned above when we're there and although the fish is beautiful it wouldn't be the same without the batter!

what a waste if you throw the batter away. think whoever made this up needs BATTERING .

If the batter is soggy it's because the temperature of the fat isn't high enough. I found this out to my cost when, after a Japanese friend showed me how to make tempura veg I tried at home. Me and my OH sat around groaning all afternoon because our liver had taken a beating with too much oil.

Wish I hadn't read this thread today as it's one of the 2 days on the 5:2! I love the batter and could just go a sausage supper now - don't like the fish. Oh dear sad

I used to eat the batter as we have a fantastic fish and chip shop near us, but now I would just eat the fish and leave the batter. I follow the Ketogenic way of eating so wouldn't have the chips either.

Are mushy peas out too?

Callistemon Sat 22-Feb-20 22:51:03

Just steamed cod then.

I meant yes, they're out
Or no, they are not ketogenic

Love batter and the scraps. Used to always have 'four penn'orth of chips and two 'cakes (fish cakes: fish in between two slices of potatoes and battered) - divine!
