Warburtons Bread, anyone else have this problem?

As the title says I have a problem with Warburtons Bread, it’s the smell.
DH can’t smell anything, but to me it smells very strongly of chemicals, almost like nail polish remover.
We even did a blindfold taste/smell test with another brand of bread and the smell from the Warburtons loaf was awful, really strong, to me not him.
I’ve tried taking it out of its wrapper and decanting it into another bag, but it still reeks.
Problem is that he loves it, so I am using up the frozen loaves up out of the freezer, thankfully we only have one left, it’s taking ages to use them up as I’m not eating it. I’m longing for a proper sliced loaf that doesn’t smell.
It isn’t a recent thing , I’ve been able to smell the Warburtons loaf for years.
Is it just me??

PS , it’s the same with fresh loaves as well, so it isn’t the freezing that’s causing it.

I don't buy Warburtons, but I do sometimes get that chemically smell from other brands.
It seems so random that I haven't yet managed to work out what causes it!

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 30-Apr-20 20:07:30

its odd that I’m the only one who can smell it, I’m obviously a sensitive little flower!

Is it just white bread Oopsadaisy?

I don't often eat bread but when I do, it's Warburtons wholemeal and I can't say i've noticed a smell.

It's vile ! As is all wrapped bread. I'm sure my sense of smell and taste buds have increased in strength as I've got older as I could balk at some of the foodstuffs that have changed over the years.
Even tins of sweets/chocs at Christmas stink to high Heaven, they don't smell at all appetising when you remove the lids.

The inferiority of foodstuffs as far as I'm concerned is a disgrace. So many takeovers over the years have left some items inedible.

We’ve been using a bread maker since a programme showed how many additives go into factory produced bread. It’s certainly helped with OH’s allergies. A bit of pain now with flour and yeast in such short supply.

The only wrapped bread that I found edible was one called Henllan a Welsh baked bread supplied to Asda, which I haven't unfortunately been able to get with me not going to Asda.

I really like Warburtons white sliced bread. Never noticed a smell and I’ve got a good sense of smell. How strange!

EllanVannin Thu 30-Apr-20 20:47:04

M&S own baked ( on the premises ) bread is lovely. Why can't all bread taste the same as this ?

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 30-Apr-20 20:53:16

DH likes a sliced white for toast and sandwiches, admittedly it’s helped my weight, because I don’t eat it, as it’s disgusting, but Warburtons is the only bread that I’ve noticed that smells.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 30-Apr-20 20:54:27

Dontmind it’s all Warburtons bread not just the white.

GrandmaMoira Thu 30-Apr-20 21:33:03

I find all white sliced bread smells of ammonia. I buy it for the family but don't eat it. Warburtons is not as bad as other brands. Kingsmill is the worst.

Missfoodlove Thu 30-Apr-20 21:36:51

I know the smell well, disgusting.
It’s all the chemicals.

Fiachna50 Thu 30-Apr-20 21:44:31

I buy Warburtons gluten-free bread, it's one of the better tasting ones. I cannot say Ive encountered this problem at all.

Barmeyoldbat Thu 30-Apr-20 21:47:29

Why not write/email and tell them the problem.

Hetty58 Thu 30-Apr-20 21:53:35

I prefer home baked and have plenty of time to make it. Even soda bread, done in thirty minutes, makes far better toast than sliced stuff.

I make two loaves and slice, wrap and freeze one when it's cooled down.

Then there is bannock, so quick and lovely for lunch!

BlueBelle Thu 30-Apr-20 21:59:49

I have Warburtons seeded loaf and never smelt anything only normal bread smell

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 30-Apr-20 22:33:20

Barmwyoldbat that’s a good idea, but I thought I was the only one who noticed it.
I’m just being idle and should be making my own bread really, but the mess that DH makes when he slices uncut bread has to be seen to be believed.

MiniMoon Thu 30-Apr-20 22:42:10

I cant say I've noticed a smell with Warburtons bread. DH likes Jacksons of Yorkshire white sliced bread, but I don't, I think the crust tastes annd smells funny. I can't describe it, but I find it unpleasant.
I'm trying to make more bread, it's much nicer, and you know what is in it.

blondenana Thu 30-Apr-20 22:42:41

I like Hovis best of both, also i notice wholemeal seems to stay fresher longer
Rarely buy white bread

Callistemon Thu 30-Apr-20 23:38:55

Warburtons gluten free is the best of the gf breads, Genius is not bad
Their Scotch pancakes are the best, too.
I know that they make the gf bread in a different factory to normal bread.

I'm not sure about normal bread, it's in the freezer ready for DH to take a slice or two out and he has never complained.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 01-May-20 10:19:20

Oopsdaisy, I can believe the mess your husband makes. Mr Barmey makes his own bread in a bread maker and the mess when he cuts it is unbelievable. About writing/emailing about the bread, I worked as a temp for 4 weeks in a bread factory in the complaints department and people use to send in slices of bread with holes in it. We use to treat the complaint in a proper way and always send them a cheque for £5. Probably the reason we had so many complaints.

Fennel Fri 01-May-20 11:36:40

I like Warburton's seeded bread, small loaves, thick sliced. I've never tried their white. Their fruit teacakes are good too. Neither has a 'chemical' smell, but a bit yeasty.
Oops maybe your sense of smell has changed?

Callistemon Fri 01-May-20 11:51:07

I just sniffed DH's Farmhouse with soda (a substitution in the online shop) and it smells just like bread.

Sometimes things do smell odd if we've had a cold, have hay fever or, perhaps I shouldn't suggest this, if you are going to have a migraine headache.
Do you suffer from migraines, Oopsadaisy?
I hope not, but it is a thought.
