What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

Yes have noticed a few gaps. As I shop on line that’s been ok just substitutions but if I go to Sainsbury’s to pick up a few bits they have a few empty shelves not to bad. Hoping that we don’t get people bulk buying.

I seen the chiller empty of milk in small Tesco I like the skimmed milk and they had a few pints of that which I bought, many people were complaining.
Quite a few gaps on Sainsburys fresh fruit and veg shelves also fresh chicken was low and baked beans shelves looking empty.

Price increases on a lot of items and could not believe how much the price has increased on many biscuit packets.

Aleg and Hooty looks like Scotland has more empty shelves than here then.
Look on the bright side ( foraging!?) it’s all good exercise.

Wanna have a go at the Welsh too Lemongrove?

Or the Northern Irish? Alioop Wed 11-Aug-21 11:44:16

Mind you, Brexit's done for them already...what japes.

lemongrove Wed 11-Aug-21 12:39:17

Wanna? What word is this?? Have a go? ?
My, you are defensive Alegrias the mere word Scotland seems to set you off.

Those of you having problems with milk, could you get a milkman? I wouldn't be without mine. He delivers me a vegetable box too and bread/butter. It comes at 11pm at night but my husband is generally up to get it in and my dog even ignores him now.

Down here in West Sussex I cannot get sparkling water and gaps in Tesco veg supplies for several weeks now.

Treetops05 Wed 11-Aug-21 12:59:53

Empty shelves in Newton Abbot, Devon and has been for many weeks. Difficult when my FinL will only eat certain makes and brands.

Modompodom Wed 11-Aug-21 13:05:19

I have shopped in Asda in London and Dover and Aldi in Dover over the past few days, and the shelves were all well stocked.

There was no ready prepared crunchy salad, and 4 pint Tesco semi- skimmed milk, and frozen it fresh broccoli, I have been forced to buy iceberg lettuce and peel off the leaves myself ( and the lettuce will sit there in the fridge looking very self righteous all week)!!! And buy Cravendale milk ( which always slightly annoys me as it is 2 litres rather than 4 pints and I feel slightly short changed!). And forget about making broccoli and stiton soup, a lovely fatty but healthy accompaniment to salad, but I'll survive, I'm sure!!!!

Callistemon

So glad I didn't mention it was Waitrose we went to last Friday.
It was the first visit to an actual store in 19 months!!

I did moan about the avocados - hope no-one heard me.

I notice that the placeholder example text for Tesco picker notes is now

pick only ripe avocados please

Years ago it was

I want green bananas

Some readers might like to know that Tesco at present has good discounts on lots of pens and other stuff

Lots of gaps in Sainsburys today and also lots of foodstuffs with short use by dates. I usually do my weekly shop online and cannot remember the last time they had everything I'd ordered. Also gaps in the local coop. I was told there was a real problem with tea and water! I'm in Kent.

Petalpop Wed 11-Aug-21 13:11:09

Crisps, biscuits and cat food shelves where empty in our local Sainsburys in West Berks on Saturday. Cat food has been iffy for a while so I order all my pet food on line (and it works out cheaper).

^I so wish that the ‘scare-mongers’ would stop saying there will be shortages.^

I get really annoyed by scaremongers in all things.

There is no milk to be had in my town of about 12,000 people, although we have 4 supermarkets. I hope I'm sure it will get delivered this afternoon so I'll have to go off round the shops again looking for it. Foraging for basis foodstuffs is not exactly how I'd envisaged spending my retirement.

Hooray! The milk fairy came wink

frenchie Wed 11-Aug-21 13:20:41

Am living in France (never hid the fact!)and the only reason some fruit and vegs are in short supply and more expensive is due to the dreadful spring we had.
And due to Brexit and only Brexit, M&S’s shelves are empty in Paris!

amwelljulia Wed 11-Aug-21 13:27:51

Here in East Herts most goods are available but there is a lack of choice in some lines such as tissues, toilet rolls etc. There has been a shortage of milk too and I notice that some fruit is missing from our local Tesco. I haven't seen peaches for a while.

Markoni40 Wed 11-Aug-21 13:47:49

SW London.. lots of shortages in my local Waitrose

cornergran Wed 11-Aug-21 13:49:46

Waitrose shop this morning, Somerset. All fresh produce plentiful. Limited stock of skimmed milk, plenty of semi skimmed. Shelves looked well stocked other than tinned fruit. Shelf stickers apologising and citing delivery issues. It’s the only grocery shop we do ourselves, the rest are on line from a warehouse, so far few missing items.

Daisend1 Wed 11-Aug-21 13:50:54

On the day I normally shop, noticing, many 'gaps' in the shelves of my local supermarkets.
I live in a popular SW coastal location with many 'second homes' / holiday lets' so this is not unusual and with more taking a blighty 2021 holiday rather than risk any possible restrictions concerning overseas travel.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 11-Aug-21 13:59:42

I've seen some empty shelves in the East Midlands but nothing too drastic. A little less fish and meat but that's it.

HillyN Wed 11-Aug-21 14:06:41

We shop at Lidl and last week we couldn't get granulated sweetener, whole tinned tomatoes, fruit and nut muesli, fruit crush, mixers, fizzy orange drink or tinned pineapple. We are near Bristol.

JenniferEccles Wed 11-Aug-21 14:22:06

Doesn’t all this highlight just how fussy we have become with our food now we have become completely accustomed to large supermarkets giving us such a huge selection of everything?

Take for instance bread and milk. We are so used to there being dozens of variations of those two basic simple food items, so if we are presented with even a slightly limited selection we feel shortchanged.

Nobody will go hungry, despite the endless scaremongering going on.
We only have to look around us to see that food shortages would actually be beneficial to an increasing number of people.

GillJames Wed 11-Aug-21 14:22:45

Out local supermarket has been great throughout the pandemic and the fist moths of Brexit. Even had loo rolls, bread and pasts when there were shortages reported of those items everywhere. For the first time last week there wasn't much of anything but some of of everything. We did manage to get all that we needed in fact.

JaneJudge Wed 11-Aug-21 14:29:13

It isn't just about being fussy, people on budgets need to know what is or isn't available. It is no good to someone on universal credit that home brand tinned tomatoes have ran out but mutti is available. It isn't difficult to think outside of your own life experience.

Curlywhirly Wed 11-Aug-21 14:39:22

Yes, some empty shelves here in my part of Cheshire. No coconut milk and tomato puree in Lidl and my favourite frozen chunky chips were missing for over 2 weeks. The local Co-Op milk shelves were completely empty last weekend. I have noticed other empty shelves but didn't really pay attention to what was missing. Over the last few weeks/months there have been real shortages in building materials, our son has just had a lot of renovation work on his house and the builder struggled to source some things.
