Having just been to 2/3 named supermarkets..we do seem to have empty shelves...perhaps inner Cities are more affected.. idid post a British Spuds thread as the potatoes were in date but had tocut away most of produce...is this Brexit/shortfall of drivers/pandemic...seems we are seeing fallout in big cities

MaizieD Fri 27-Aug-21 23:09:45

Oh goodness, let's not worry about what the CEO of one of our large supermarket chains and the CBI have to say about shortages. Because Gransnet Leavers know best and everything is absolutely fine..

I'm just glad I've got my Brexit stash, bought last autumn...

I went shopping today did not see any empty shelves maybe a city thing.
l also read that out of 550,000 lorry drivers over 50% are not working due to poor pay and working conditions a undervalued workforce paid poorly after being undercut by Eastern European drivers, driving wages down!

A lot of drivers with HGV licences have found other work because low pay and unsocial hour made driving unattractive, now their lifestyle has changed dont expect many to return.

I’ve managed to shop and get all we need, few lines low or missing..
Change menu’s to suit and use other cleaning things or different makes.
Hardly the end of the world is it hmm

Just for some clarification

Sparky56 Sun 29-Aug-21 00:25:25

What do you mean “people have been advised” - by whom and when?

Sparky56 Sun 29-Aug-21 00:33:33

Twitter!!??‍♀️

Bea65 Sun 29-Aug-21 11:50:59

This post wasn't about panic buying but a matter of concern still nearly impossible to find frozen fruits..I buy them as they last longer and taste very fresh ?

BStP Tue 31-Aug-21 10:48:23

Cat food and cat litter seem to be in short supply in a lot of places. I couldn't find icing sugar this weekend or mayonnaise. I cannot think about Christmas menu's just yet though I do wonder if I should think about investing in a bigger freezer!

Just for some clarification

Got to admit you're a trier, GG13

Germany may be short of hgv drivers, but it isn't short of food.

I wonder what the difference between the UK & Germany could be hmm

GrannyGravy13 Wed 01-Sept-21 10:16:04

MaizieD it’s not just Germany though is it?

USA, Poland, France and many other Countries a have a shortage of HGV drivers, along with slower delivery times on many products.

Food shortages seem to be rather random round the U.K. not every is experiencing them, the more the media hype the situation the more the public will panic buy

(As for a shortage of Christmas goodies the internet is full of tins of sweets stacked high in major supermarkets)

We had this argument the other day, GG13.

My response remains the same; all the countries you cite are not experiencing food shortages/empty shelves in supermarkets.

As for 'panic buying', people can't panic buy stuff that isn't in the shops (or can they hmm )

That may well be true, but when people spent more on food they spent way, way less on housing.

Young people (who did not, on the whole, vote for Brexit) are paying a much higher percentage of their income on rent and mortgages than a generation ago, and to add higher food prices to that will make a huge difference to their lifestyle and that of their children.

To knowingly vote for that seems positively vindictive.

Not necessarily. When interest rates/mortgage rates were very high many really struggled to buy food. I remember going almost vegetarian because we could not afford meat. We also lived on veg that was seasonal (cheap/homegrown). It wasn't just turnips and swede either we do grow a good variety in the UK.

I have adult children who have mortgages and they have much more disposable income than we ever dreamt of. I'm delighted for them and their families. I also have one AC who is stuck in a private rental with a family. They are paying more in rent than the others are in mortgage and are really struggling to save a deposit.

I can honestly say that apart from one occasion when I struggled to get milk I haven't noticed any empty shelves. If people here the words 'empty shelves' many will stock pile and buy more than they need leaving none for others.

Mamardoit Wed 01-Sept-21 11:09:19

I do know the difference between here and hear. Honest.

MaizieD Wed 01-Sept-21 11:20:33

How can you do that if there is nothing on the shelf to buy?

Empty shelf photos are all over twitter (& it's not the same one being repeated) , and we have had empty shelves in all the big supermarkets locally from time to time.
It's not a perpetual state, just delayed deliveries mostly, but also shortages of some items.

The Co-Op has permanent notices up apologising for inability to supply their usual wide choice.. They must have noticed something hmm

Weirdly at the moment there is a pillow shortage round me! I went to four shops today trying to buy pillows, the only ones available were duck feather in M&S - all the other stores (Next, Wilko, B&M) had none at all. I wonder why? It may be random things like that which become unobtainable over the next few months rather than food.

Doodledog Wed 01-Sept-21 12:39:05

There is apparently a wood shortage, too.

I am looking at office furniture, and the range I decided on in the end has a 16 week lead time. A friend has had great trouble getting a new shed.

Mamardoit Wed 01-Sept-21 12:41:33

A pillow shortage at the start of the university term can't be good. Try Dunhelm Mills. I'm not sure if they are nationwide or just the East Midlands.

M0nica Wed 01-Sept-21 14:36:51

I am waiting for the fencer because there is a lack of fencing panels.

However we had no difficulty getting wood block for our extension floor. The problem is finding the floor layers to lay them. They are booked up months ahead. We hope to have them laid before Christmas!

Yes, as Marmadoit says, it's the start of term.

IKEA could be stripped of bedding, cutlery etc

Dunelm have pillows online Casdon, if you know what you want

They managed with toilet rolls, didn't they? Just the word shortage set people off buying them whenever they saw them.

I'll never forget a lady in Waitrose rushing around telling everybody that toilet rolls had just been restocked, with two big packs in her trolley. She seemed quite amazed when we thanked her but said we didn't need any. I asked her why she thought everyone needed them and her answer was 'Well there's a shortage so everyone needs to buy them' hmm

Casdon Wed 01-Sept-21 16:15:28

I’ll have a look thanks Callistemon - I usually buy them in store so I can test them, but perhaps it is the student market taking them all - they obviously rejected the duck feather ones, as did I.

Fennel Fri 10-Sept-21 17:48:10

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread but has anyone else found a shortage of paracetamol or other medications?
Our big Tesco have cut allowance of paracetamol to 2 packets per customer.
Many meds. are imported from Europe and other parts of the world.

M0nica Fri 10-Sept-21 19:05:07

Fennel Yes, in Waitrose yesterday the painkiller shelves were almost empty

The head of the Retail Consortium (or some such) was interviewed on the radio this evening, saying that the 'just-in-time' delivery system that everyone from car manufacturers to supermarkets have relied on over recent year is totally broken and that we are going to have to go back to a time when retailers and manufacturers had to look ahead, plan and keep stock and that we will no longer be able to rely on shops having everything we want all the time.

Callistemon Fri 10-Sept-21 19:06:45

We only went to M&S Food today so not a full shop but the shelves were as full as normal.

Our big Tesco have cut allowance of paracetamol to 2 packets per customer.
That has been the limit everywhere for a long time Fennel, as it is easy to overdose on paracetamol.
A total of 32 tablets per customer per transaction is the maximum, I believe.
