Gluten Free. What do you miss

Laid awake at 3 o’clock this morning and all I could think of was I’d love a nice milky Horlicks right now. I really loved those. If you are coeliac what do you especially miss.

Granddaughter diagnosed coeliac aged 9 (failing to thrive always tired plus very very pale) plus she is also a vegetarian. She copes very well and never complains. I on the other hand find it very difficult catering for her and struggle with reading the small print on labels. (Due to size and colour of printing).

Lucca, I worked it out when a friend who had similar symptoms (unpredictable rushing to the loo) was sent to have loads of tests which were inconclusive so was told to cut out gluten products to see if that helped. It did so I tried it and it worked for me too. It seemed to start around the menopause.

Another thing I miss is freedom to nip into a cafe and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Gf cake out is nearly always a brownie.

We went out for lunch today and the menu included prawn and smoked salmon with wholemeal bread but there was a glutton free version which I asked for. It was exactly the same just minus the bread!!

It wasn't a glutton free option - pesky phone. It was gluten free.

I need a glutton free option too, kittylester ?

I have never made GF bread that wasn't fit for the bin.

That is difficult, Oldbat
DD finds a paleo diet suits her; although she's not that keen on meat it seems to be better than other foods.

? luckily I noticed that autocorrect exchanged paleo to paleontologist!
(I couldn't eat a whole one)

I don't miss much, I have Warburtons soft rolls for lunch and find a bit more filling helps things along. I just ask that nobody eats a doughnut in front of me.

Thankyou everyone for your comments it’s so interesting to hear all your thoughts and ideas. My son lives in China which is very difficult for me when we go and visit.
We never cook anything with gluten in and no one can ever tell the difference. We’ve learned to do gluten free full buffets and totally gluten free Christmas dinners etc. My husband eats his own bread everyday so he doesn’t become intolerant to gluten. Everyone who visits eats gluten free pasta and again there’s no difference it really can be done. My banana loaf goes down a storm. But luckily red wine is gluten free so I’m sorted lol The only thing is we never get invited to eat at other peoples houses. No one trusts themselves to cook for me. Everyone comes to us.

It is fairly easy to adapt isn't it? But all bread is rubbish. I eat pitta breads with fillings inside and there is a good bake it yourself small baguette but I miss toast and marmalade.

kitty Schar paninis are lovely, especially if you sprinkle them with water and put them under the grill for a few minutes. Keep an eye on them though, as they can very suddenly turn from golden to incinerated! blush

My doctor advised me to eat gluten free foods, and since then i am missing maccies breakfast because they dont have any GF menu. Can you recommend any good restaurants where i can have gluten free items and my family can have regular but tasty breakfast?

Bread, most GF bread is awful, I've found a couple of loaves I tend to keep in the freezer for toast but I used to love a crusty French loaf or soft white rolls never found suitable GF alternatives.

M&S do a gluten-free tiger loaf, it does tend to break up a bit towards the end of the loaf but it's better than most.
Not cheap though!

Honestly the thing I miss most is just grabbing food on the go without overthinking every ingredient. Like I used to love picking up a mcdonald's wrap of the day without a second thought and now I have to check everything twice. Fresh bakery bread is a close second though, nothing gluten free has come close to that yet!
