We are currently holidaying in France, there is no mustard!
Not even an outrageously priced artisan mustard.
The Leclerc supermarket in Bayeux is enormous, you can furnish your home, equip your garden there but alas no mustard.
Arlette Gondre (Pegasus Bridge cafe) went to England last week to buy French mustard!

We do grow some here Fennel I mentioned it in my previous post, but I doubt in the quantities to replace the failed harvests in France and Canada.

Magnolia62 Thu 09-Jun-22 11:26:47

Just back from Brittany. No mustard of any type there either. Explanatory signs on bare shelves. So I bought four jars when I went to Asda and my husband bought, but forgot to tell me, another three jars! We are not usually stockpilers!

ps here's how

So why not
Why not try to grow it here? It's from the brassica family and should thrive here with the warmer weather we have now.
We would have to learn how to collect the ripe seeds and prepare them with additives.
I still have the remnants of a jar of Carrefour Moutarde a L',Ancienne. Aged about 5 years, Large grains plus wine vinaigre etc.I use a tiny amount in a rub for roast chicken.

I used turmeric the other day to replace the mustard in my salad dressing. It didn't bind as well with the oil, but the colour was good and the overall taste was fine.

Yes I've done the same and added a tiny bit of 'huile de piment'
to give it a kick. I've never seen colmans mustard in France,
never mind the powder.

We have still got plenty in our store cupboard fortunately. I also stocked up on English mustard when we were over there. ?

Nothing in Leclerc or Carrefour this week. Still a pot of mustard and nettles in the organic shop. ?
Poor harvests in France and Canada apparently.

None in Oz Jjebe? It’s clearly a global problem.

mokryna Wed 08-Jun-22 13:03:31

None here neither.

I'd rather miss out the Coleman's if
I was making my own to be honest.

Dinahmo Sun 05-Jun-22 15:03:18

Why not make your own? Start off with a tin of Colmans mustard powder, some olive oil and way you go.

NotSpaghetti Sun 05-Jun-22 14:53:08

40 jobs went to Burton on Trent but i Coleman's split production between Burton and Germany... I assumed this was for the EU market post Brexit but may actually be wrong. There were over 100 jobs at the Norfolk plant though so it is still a loss. I did also read, however that all the dry mustard was now being packed in Germany and wet mustard was going to Burton.

Thanks Marydoll and Jaxjacky I’m going to be on the lookout now, I didn’t know anybody except Colmans made mustard in the UK.

Joseanne Sun 05-Jun-22 11:14:43

We tasted a mustard in Reims once that had champagne in it. I've just checked, and it's out of stock. Please don't tell me ? is in short supply too!
Raymond must have bought all the moutarde up!
He uses loads.

Our Local Sainsbugs had loads yesterday, all types. I only bought two jars, one Whole Grain, one Dijon ?.
Yes, The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France dates back to 1295. Drawn up between John Balliol an Philip IV of France, against the aggressive English.

Please don't let this turn into another SNP rant yet again against the English.
I live in an area with a huge sign saying last battle on English soil 1745, a lot of the old farmhouses and churches are crenulated and fortified and the area is studied with Bastille houses and Castles.
The English can't be blamed for everything. If the French have run out of mustard let them eat H.P.sauce.

Jaxjacky Sun 05-Jun-22 10:18:22

Tracklements whole grain mustard seeds are from Suffolk.

Marydoll Sun 05-Jun-22 10:05:19

Arran mustards are delicious (according to my DH). Our family bring them back from holidays there.

Bellanonna

Some of it’s made in Norwich, though, Mamie ??

Not any more. The Colmans factory closed a couple of years ago.

It’s still made in UK, just not in Norfolk. I remember the press at the time - it’s part of Unilever, now made in Burton on Trent, but still actually grown in Norfolk.

Maybe time for a few artisan UK brands to spring up?

Often easier to speak than to write!

Sago Sun 05-Jun-22 09:48:13

Home from our lovely holiday now.
Whilst away we all spoke French, there were 5 of us, my husband is the only fluent French speaker.
At no point were we criticised or corrected on our French.
The French were so pleased we all tried to converse in their language.
