Still on the subject of not cooking do you ever have a take away ?

We just never have and probably never will as I worry about the quality of the food and the salt and sugar in the meals and grudge the prices charged . I see so many young couples on TV programmes about reducing the cost of food who have them several times a week . The only ones we ever had was 45 years ago when we lived in the north of Scotland and a lovely Indian man made curries in his home and delivered them to be reheated. We used to order a mild and a medium and mix them but my DBIL lived with us for a while and he always had a hot one. The chap delivering them ( also the maker of the curries ) asked me one day who ate these hot curries. I told him and he replied that he wished he could eat them himself but they were too hot.

When we lived in England we had a very good Indian and a very good Chinese takeaways. I really miss the occasional one. Here in France Profonde takeaways were unknown before Covid. During then some restaurants started them and now there are a few takeaways.

We have just discovered a fabulous kebab kiosk, and will probably indulge in a takeaway from them now and again.

In summer the next village has a night market every Wednesday which is mainly food outlets, and very good they are too. English Fish and Chips, good wines, good pression and last week the most to die for Moules Frites. We can eat at long tables provided by the Mairie or sit on the beach by the lake. What's not to like!

Very rarely. Fish and chips once a year maybe, and a pizza perhaps a couple of times a year.

We no longer have takeaways when we are at home in Denmark, as they are just far too expensive. We can cook for nearly a week for the two of us for the price of a takeaway for two!

Travelling in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland or Spain we do sometimes eat takeaway, as they are affordable in other countries and 11 years ago (last time we were in Scotland) fish and chips was affordable too. Probably isn't any more.

Yes Friday night is take away night & it varies, Chinese,Indian, fish and chips or pizza , its a good way to start the weekend ? ?

Every Friday night we have an Indian takeaway. I really look forward to it, the best thing is I don’t have to think about what to cook for dinner.

Apart from the odd fish and chip shop tea we’d never had takeaways as a family but we’d always celebrated birthdays with meals out. I now live alone but during the pandemic my bubble (eldest son family) celebrated birthdays with takeaways and joined in my youngest son’s birthday with a remote takeaway. That’s all ended now and I’m back to not having, or missing, takeaways. I can make quick, more nutritious and a lot cheaper meals. It does annoy me when people complain about the cost of living but still have expensive regular takeaways

Very occasionally fish and chips and we sometimes buy a curry meal and sides from Waitrose. When we had our kitchen remodelled we ordered in a batch of ready meals online which was convenient but no more than that. We occasionally order a meal from Cote but that's a real treat.

I can't remember the last time I had Fish and chips from the shop. Definitely before lockdown. I don't ever have other takeaways.

StoneofDestiny Tue 26-Jul-22 13:20:12

Only during the pandemic when our local pub did takeaway meals and drinks. Never had a takeaway’ meal otherwise.

We do order Thai or Indian takeaway now and again as we have some exceptionally good takeaway/restaurants where I live. I never order Nando’s or burgers to be delivered, a) because they never arrive hot and b) I’m not that fussed on burgers. Usually we order Indian or Thai food for a treat to celebrate someone’s birthday in the family, and eat together.

Hardly ever. Fish and chips in our village are horrible and neither Indian nor Chinese deliver

Near dd’s house in Oxford on Saturdays there’s often a stall with authentic Cyprus-style kebabs* in pitta bread with salad. I can always fancy one of those! We’re not often there on a Saturday, though.

*Souvlakia type, not doner kebab, which I never fancied even before a Greek Cypriot friend told us how a local one (in N London) was dismantled for cleaning - the centre was alive with maggots! ?

We live in a small town which has a burger/chicken/pizza place, a Chinese, Fish and chip shop and an Indian. All are 5 star hygiene graded. I'm not allowed to cook for health reasons, so my husband, a retired chef cooks 7 days a week. Whenever he seems down or fed up, I suggest a take-away. Sometimes he says yes, others no, but it cheers him up if I just suggest it. All are quite good, but we don't use the Indian, it is far too expensive. When in Gloucestershire an Indian was £13 for a starter and main, here a main course is £15. Too expensive to be practical.

Never. I don’t like eating out either.

Hellis Tue 26-Jul-22 16:01:26

I don't like eating out much, prefer to eat in the comfort and privacy of my own home, so we have a takeaway delivered about once a week. We only live in a small town but have lots of choice-Indian, Thai, Chinese, Nepalese, Turkish, Italian and good old chip shop fare. Also a pub that does lovely Sunday roasts-works out not much dearer than buying it all and faffing about for hours just for two of us. All the ones we've tried have been very good and the prices cheaper than their eat in menu

Goodness me - people who don’t have takeaways - I must live on another planet. I hate cooking - mainly because I work at home (self employed) and at 76 with health issues, am often too tired to cook - if I do it’s often ‘cheat cooking’ - simplest ingredients prepared with the littlest time.
I have a takeaway quite regularly and due to the pandemic the choices have increased a lot over the last 2+ years I’ve been isolated/near isolated.
Tonight I will have a plain meal of Scampi , chips and peas with real Lemon, and tartare sauce - via Harvesters, Yum!

suelld Tue 26-Jul-22 18:56:09

PS I live alone!

We have them about once a week, occasionally fish and chips, but more than likely a Chinese or Indian. Love a peshwari nan smothered in honey. Could just eat one now ??

JaneJudge Tue 26-Jul-22 19:01:44

we hav them when we need or want to

silverlining48 Tue 26-Jul-22 19:28:29

We don’t get takeaways or deliveries, or buy pre cooked from the supermarket fir the microwave. Everything is cooked from scratch. I like going out to eat though, lunch and dinner, so don’t feel deprived.

varian Tue 26-Jul-22 19:44:20

About twice a year we might have takeaway fish and chips - usually at the seaside.

Otherwise I cook everything from scratch. We have never had cooked food delivered to the house.

Some people must have a lot of money to order cooked food. Surely it is always more economical to buy ingredients and cook at home?

jerseygirl Tue 26-Jul-22 20:29:50

ohhh yes!! about twice a month. Its such a treat. We usually have them at the weekend. We use a Chinese take away that delivers. They are always freshly made and piping hot.

Jaxjacky Tue 26-Jul-22 20:31:16

annifrance loved those evenings when we lived there, Marche Gourmand in our village, music too. In latter years we had African curries as well as the local fare, lovely memories.

Missiseff Tue 26-Jul-22 20:32:39

No. Too full of fat and salt

Deedaa Tue 26-Jul-22 20:46:38

I've lived in the same place for 22 years and have been really lucky with very good fish and chips and chinese take aways. Never had a bad meal from either of them. the chippy does a pensioner's special so I have on about every three weeks, the Chinese is more expensive so probably only two or three times a year.
