In november and December you can have a free soup, roll and a drink in most stores. This is a good offer from them I think you could meet your friends and spend a couple of hours warm and fed. Bit sad when you think this is back to soup kitchens really but generous all the same.

Good to know the big supermarkets are having a care for the public when the government are quietly enriching hedge fund managers etc. with unlimited annual bonus payments. But then the present PM (writing Sunday 10th October at 11.17) got half of her campaign funds from hedge funds etc.

Can I also put a shout out for Iceland who have a couple of schemes to help out, including offering interest free small loans.

Our Asda’s cafe is “temporarily* closed.
Hopefully it will open again, as offer or no offer, I found it useful.

Sadly our nearest 3 Asda’s have closed their cafes.

Same where I live. In fact, I don't know of any Asda which still has a cafe in and around my area. Lovely gesture though

In theory a nice idea, although we do not have an Asda near us.
I'm surprised that it's not for people of pensionable age rather than all over 60s though.

Katek Sun 09-Oct-22 11:41:05

Nice thought ......except you'll get even colder getting there!

pooohbear2811 Sun 09-Oct-22 11:49:54

a great idea if you live within walking distance, or it is on a bus route with your free bus pass. Meet a few friends and have a catch up and a heat for an hour or so.
Sadly for me I don't they will cater for food allergy issues at the price.

Not to be too cynical. Their offer also guarantees that you will do your shopping there. In marketing terms its called 'a lost leader'. But having said that it's a really nice idea and feels friendly.
Our nearest Asda closed their cafe ages ago and to be honest it was pretty miserable and it then degraded further with the menu going to junk food meals that sat for ages and were dried out. It was often almost empty.
In Asdas favour out local one offers a really nice room in store for local groups to meet up in, free of charge

polnan Sun 09-Oct-22 12:04:35

well slightly off topic? but our local Morrisons, a small shop, used by a lot of older people and disabled... more of a larger corner shop
has just closed its small coffee/cake place

not a good thing, here in this part of Swindon, so very few places to go to , let alone get a coffee, etc and COMPANY

MerylStreep Sun 09-Oct-22 12:10:45

Phillipa
It’s not a lost leader ? is a Loss leader

Mamma7 Sun 09-Oct-22 12:35:29

Sad it’s needed but good it’s provided….

Sadly our local Asda, in walking distance, closed its cafe years ago. The nearest one is a car drive away so no savings because of the fuel cost, or I would have liked to use this offer. I'm due to get my bus pass and state pension next month, but sadly many of our local bus routes have now been axed.

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 13:24:14

Perhaps, cynically thinking, Asda have factored in all these things, and worked out that that they can easily manage the few who can take up the offer. (And still look good)

volver Sun 09-Oct-22 13:27:21

That's not cynical at all MissA. That's good business. ASDA still need to make an overall profit.

Remember the Hoover flights offer? Nobody wants to be in that position again...

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 13:31:34

I had never heard of that, but what an interesting skim read it is.

I have heard of people being asked to leave "eat all you like" restaurants.

volver Sun 09-Oct-22 13:33:16

?

This is the best line... It was perceived as two US flights for just £100 with a free vacuum cleaner included.

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 13:35:25

Yes!
That part made me laugh!

I must go back and read it properly.

Gwenisgreat1 Sun 09-Oct-22 14:13:07

Well our Asda gave up it's cafe years ago in favour of Customer service, Newsagent, Pharmacy, Opticians etc. But I would rather leave it for those who really need it anyway, for company or the money involved.

TiggyW Sun 09-Oct-22 14:18:20

I think I’ll set up a Thursday Murder Club at our local Asda. ?? I’ll be Joyce - definitely not Elizabeth! ??

Gabrielle56 Sun 09-Oct-22 14:20:55

Good idea but I bet the usual happens, the greedy out- for- nowt well off pensioners will be rushing to get their freebies, not all pensioners are broke and I really hope some common sense and consideration is given to this offer , Morrisons has similar near us, but we won't be going , save it for those who really need it I say

Norah Sun 09-Oct-22 14:21:48

Our nearest Asda has a cafe. Lovely idea for Asda customers.

I'd rather coffee at home, won't be using Asda table space. smile

hilz Sun 09-Oct-22 14:22:21

Come on Tesco, M&S etc Please follow suit. This may be a lifeline for retired folk who are struggling to heat their homes and a hot soup, roll and cuppa mid day may introduce new friendships too. It's a win win.

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:22:57

If everyone has come from a cold house and, all feel freezing, it can be the blue murder club.

SummerJ Sun 09-Oct-22 14:31:42

I must be in the minority here. This sort of offer is very ageist as there are many people of all age groups who would really appreciate this. Many many pensioners, who can easily afford to pay for their own tea, coffee etc will flock to ASDAs because of this offer and ASDA will benefit as the older generation will stay to do their weekly 'shop'. Nothing is free! To be honest it will not cost ASDA a pound to dish out tea, coffee, a roll and soup! It is a shame there is not a system which could identify those who genuinely needed this help and support. I would quite like to give my 'pound offer' away to someone younger who needs it.

volver Sun 09-Oct-22 14:42:03

Some folk are never pleased...

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:58:27

I think I'll start a petition, insisting that Asda stop doing this vile practice immediately!
Damn liberty takers!
