Slow cooker gammon

I have a 2kg gammon joint to go with turkey for Christmas day but no free oven space. Can I cook it overnight in my slow cooker? Any ideas appreciated. Online ideas are telling me six hours on low setting. I'm cooking for 12 o'clock. Thanks.

We’ve just had slow coked ham hock, enough for two, it cost Β£4, yum.

I think I'll pour a bottle of dry cider over it.

One year, my MIL stood over me as I prepared it, to cook it in a large pan with a carrot or two, an onion and some peppercorns, telling me I was doing it all wrong. I'll have another glass of sherry to toast my MIL too. I did love her, really!

Callistemon21 Fri 23-Dec-22 19:51:16

Yes, we must raise a glass of sherry to her πŸ™‚

Mine's going in the slow cooker tomorrow - if it fits!

Thank you Callistemon21 I can't do Christmas without it. I hope phoenix is somewhere watching us.

Phoenix was spot on, exactly what happened when I used to cook a gammon. Mess everywhere and then the fridge too full to squeeze it into.

I always do my gammon in the pressure cooker, takes half an hour, cooked in orange juice. I don't bother with glazing and roasting as it is for eating cold.

I always do mine (unsmoked) in the oven now, but it’s usually for having cold, not for Christmas dinner. About 20 minutes before the end, I take the skin off, score the fat into diamonds, coat with a glaze of marmalade, brown sugar, mustard and allspice. Put back in a slightly hotter oven. Smells divinely Christmassy for those last 20 minutes!

There is only one way to cook gammon.

Thank you phoenix, never forgotten.

Is the glass of dry sherry for me or the cooking pot lol. Thanks again to all. I'll report back in the New Year.

Thank you everyone - I'm planning on pineapple juice so I might mix it with a bit of water.

I pressure cooked and air fried the last one in the Ninja and it was gorgeous. Any liquid gets used to make pease pudding for ham sandwiches later on.

Overnight in slow cooker on lowest setting, with sliced shallots, garlic, parsley and tarragon, and a glass of dry sherry.

Remove from cooker in the morning and allow to stand,

Make lentil or pea soup with the residual liquid.

It's what slow cookers were invented for!

Almost cover the gammon with liquid.

shysal Wed 21-Dec-22 17:40:09

I cover the gammon with boiling water to start. If it has the rind on I remove it after boiling, sprinkle with salt, and turn it into crackling in a hot oven. It never lasts long enough to make the meal table!

I've done mine in the slow cooker with very little liquid and it was a bit dry. Maybe it was too long but how much liquid do you all use? Do you have it half way up the gammon??

Yes, I do mine in quite a lot of water, not quite covering the gammon.

Put the cooking stock in the fridge overnight after it’s all cooked, skim off any fat and freeze the stock.

Delicious when making soup or risotto, very tasty.

I have been cooking the gammon joint in the slow ccoker for several years now. I am not a precise cook so roughly 3-4 hours for a 3 lb gammon and 4-5 hours for a 4-5l gammon

I did one recently in the slow cooker on low for about 6 hours using Coca Cola. I soaked it in cold water first for a few hours (could do this overnight) brought it to the boil and then rinsed in cold water to wash away any saltiness before placing in the slow cooker with the cola. It was really tasty.

In the slow cooker with cherry coke. Beautiful

Thank you all for your replies. The cooking instructions were to roast or hob cook. As I'm cooking for 12 o'clock and won't be up at 6 o'clock to get it started I think that I will slow cook the day before. I think my family will be more than happy with 'on trend' pulled gammon if that's how it turns out. Happy Christmas.

Callistemon21 Wed 21-Dec-22 11:32:57

V3ra

Callistemon21 and shysal just describe it as "pulled" and you'll be bang on trend 😁

πŸ‘

Right on trend for the first time in my life 😁

Callistemon21 Wed 21-Dec-22 11:32:00

I've par-boiled mine before now then finished it off in the oven.
Take off the skin after par-boiling leaving the fat, criss-cross with a knife and spread the fat with honey, cloves, or, the most successful recipe, with marmalade.
Then roast.

Saw this receipe a couple of days ago. Couldn't be easier. Maybe just cook a bit less so it doesn't 'pull' or shred?

I did mine recently in the slow cooker with two cans of cherry coke, a halved onion and a dozen juniper berries.
Then glazed it with a mixture of black treacle, mustard and brown sugar and roasted it in the airfryer for ten minutes.

To be honest I probably wouldn't bother with the glaze again as once the treacle got hot it melted and all slithered off! Though maybe I just put too much on...

Great minds think alike, Callistemon!
