No you are not alone but as I'm always trying not to eat things it's daft of me to comment. Enjoy the nice cakes.

Not seen this fake cream. We only seem to buy cakes when we are in France and they use good old fashioned confectioners custard if they do not use real cream, and I must confess that I much prefer confectioners custard to cream any dat.

Hear hear. Are they American imports? As for American “chocolate “, Hershey bars are revolting!
And that is I why I try not to eat any cake which isn’t homemade!

I used to prefer mille feuilles with artificial cream. Many years ago we would go to the cake shop in our lunch break and buy them as a treat. The assistant always looked down her nose at us and made us repeat that we wanted the ones with artificial not real cream! Never liked it in anything else mind.

That awful 'artificial cream' has been around for decades. When I worked in hospital catering in the '70s we used to buy it by the gallon as a liquid that was whipped to bulk it up. It was vile. I felt sorry for the poor patients who had to eat it...

But, even though we were not a well off family I was brought up on real cream and nothing really comes near it.

I don't eat cakes - in fact I think they should be banned!

Hospital food is worse now than when we had Catering Departments MaizieD. When he had his heart op Dh was served soup every day that had the look and consistency of wall paper taste and didn’t taste as nice. I swear they just put a different colour and flavour in to change varieties. Fortunately there was an M&S shop on site to buy more edible things.

I agree cupcakes these days have way too much of frosted sickly icing on top.

In defence of hospital catering.

A year or two ago a friend was in The Royal London, Whitechapel - every day a young woman with an iPad would come round taking orders for the following day.

Because of the ethnic mix of the area there was a wide range of choices - when I visited my friend, a vegetarian, was tucking into a curry with rice and naan, followed by jam roll & custard! grin

Hospital catering used to be good when it was done on site with a real catering officer. Now most hospitals just ship it in from a mass caterer and warm it up.

I don’t like cream anyway.
Cupcakes with that mountain of sickly, often garish icing on top are gross - to me anyway.
I still make little fairy cakes, though - usually for Gdcs’ birthday parties. Chocolate ones with just enough icing to cover, and a Smartie on top. 🙂

I suppose we have had our own version of "frosting" in the UK for years - buttercream.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 17-Jan-23 10:10:11

I wish you hadn’t mentioned confectioners custard MOnica - I used to work next door to a wonderful French patisserie. None of your fake cream there. I now have a craving …

I used to work with a man who told me about his previous job in a factory where the fake cream stuff was made, he said on no account ever eat it! Made with disgusting fats, lard and sugar.I was bought a small cake recently with this stuff in it by a friend and had to gouge it out and wrap in a tissue when she was out of the room🤣 so I didn’t offend her, ugggggh.

Fleurpepper Tue 17-Jan-23 10:22:11

Just disgusting. Just don't buy any product made with this and they will stop selling it.

AreWeThereYet Tue 17-Jan-23 11:14:17

I love real cream. Won't touch anything with any sort of fake cream or custard, especially those spray creams.

I inadvertently ordered a hot chocolate with cream a few weeks ago and y the time I sat down the cream had turned into a yellow layer on top of the hot chocolate 🤢

Spice101 Tue 17-Jan-23 11:19:15

The "fake" cream has been in Australia for years. I remember when I was at school in the '60's buying cream buns at the school tuck shop.

Oreo if we knew what was in most of our processed food we would not eat it.

I can remember it from when I was a child, white, sickly and sweet.

In fact, not having seen it for many years, I thought it was something introduced in wartime and carried on during rationing when there was a food shortage.

MawtheMerrier Tue 17-Jan-23 11:26:47

Does it still exist “down under” ?
Haven’t seen it here for decades.

MawtheMerrier Tue 17-Jan-23 11:29:14

And I have never even seen let alone eaten a Hershey Bar. I think of them as something out of WWII films with GI’s in them?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 17-Jan-23 11:32:32

I had one once. Never again.

I don’t mind Hershey chocolate especially the “hugs and kisses” A few years ago a colleague was going on a business trip to America- his face was a picture of horror when I said bring me back some hugs and kisses. He very kindly did though - the chocolate sort!

My GC having lived in the States and are hooked on American chocolate, when their Dad goes back that is all they ask for.
We were with them at Christmas they got their hands on a very expensive box of Chocolates from our local chocolatiers. The little so and so's had taken a bite out of loads and put them back.
They got told how naughty they had been and DD made their dad eat all the bitten ones for encouraging their obsession.
They won't do it again but my SIL did get some of the best.grin
