No we won't starve but it appears to be just us then,

Eat turnips instead of tomatoes, suggests Therese Coffey, as she admits food shortages could last a month.

Not a chance of that in my house, however desperate the situation, sorry. The smell of turnips turns my stomach, they fed the cows on them and our little bottles of school milk always smelt of turnips in the winter. I now hate both milk and turnips.

I'm wondering how restaurants in say France, Spain and elsewhere will deal with this when pricing their menus for the summer. Will they spread the increase in food costs across all the dishes, or will my salade nicoise now shoot up to €20?

My guess is everything will go up.

Those fortunate enough to be going away or eating out will just have to accept it.

I have just come back from a big Sainsbury’s, the only things not available were Asparagus (from Mexico/Peru this time of year) and Green Beans (usually from Kenya)

Whilst the salad aisle was not full, it did contain tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers etc.

Quite a few packs of Asparagus in the reduced area of Sainsbury’s for 60p. I did pick a pack up but then decided I didn’t really need it.

We’ve driven on motorway several times recently and I am now wondering why so many EU countries are driving up and down.

Are they empty and just taunting us or intelligent enough to fill out the required paperwork, which is apparently not nearly as difficult as the propaganda makes out?

The desperation to blame everything on Brexit is comical and a bit pathetic and sad.

yes, I didn't know that either. I also read,(on Twitter, so will look for authentication) that when Johnson trumpeted post Brexit trade deal between Morocco and GB which would have replaced some of the old Eu supplied fruit and salads, there was a much heralded 'new' ferry route between Morocco and GB (port unknown). No ferries. Money disappeared. Ho hum

Obviously the actual countries aren’t driving up and down U.K. motorways, just in case anyone thought we were being invaded. Just their lorries etc.

When will GN decide we are grown up enough to amend our own posts like we can do on other forums? It’s all a bit Big Brotherish and irritating.

To infer that those of us who are furious at what is happening are somehow out of balance with the tragedies in Turkey, Syria and Ukraine is unfair. I can manage to think about several things at once, and often do.

Lidl this morning was pretty well stocked (including asparagus). I wasn't looking for salad stuff but there seemed to be plenty. I don't usually shop there but might do more often as the bananas (from the Falklands) looked far better than most I've seen recently and they had lovely big bits of ginger.

Posting from Spain. We have done our supermarket shop today. Full of delicious fruit and veg. No shortages at all.

The bad weather they are talking about lasted just over a week and doesn't seem to have affected anything here.

Just been to a local farm shop for lunch today and there were plenty of vegetables available for sale but at a price! We have ours delivered by a lovely local greengrocer, his prices are good and the veg is far superior to any that we have bought in a supermarket. We will stick with him for now and see how it goes.

I've just got back from the greengrocer in town. Plenty of salad stuff available but tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers had a card stuck on the box with big red writing, "Spanish weather prices."

Tonight's recipe states halved roasted tomatoes but they will have to be from a tin.

Have to say I like a roast baby navet with duck, though the latter are pretty scarce these days (bird flu).

DH scoured the garden for veg but only found four rather sad beetroot.

It was me, and I’m sorry but being furious because you can’t get hold of tomatoes or other salad stuff is a total over reaction. There’s a lot of stuff going on in this world, and may I say, in individual people’s lives, and some of those people are Gransnetters, and they’ve got a lot more to worry about than whether they’ve got tomatoes for dinner. Some people have got insurmountable difficulties going on, and tomatoes don’t come into it.
