Just in case anyone else is interested...

Although the ingredients seemed vegetarian to me, the product description didn't specify suitable for vegetarians. I asked via their site, and have had a quick and clear response which I appreciate 😊

Wgich of the ingredients is unsuitable for vegetarians, Wol?

Not that I buy Knorr stock cubes. Just curious.

It must be the flavourings..

Elegran Sun 19-Mar-23 08:48:47

Ingredients

Water, glucose syrup, salt, palm fat, herbs (parsley, thyme, bay leaf) (7%), sugar, yeast extract, leek, onions, potassium chloride, spices (nutmeg, CELERY seeds, parsley roots), gelling agents (xanthan gum, locust bean gum), flavourings

Yes, must be the flavourings. Thay don't make any claims about suitability for vegetarians.

It is Produce of Italy, so maybe that is relevant.

Elegran Sun 19-Mar-23 08:49:21

They.

Maybe glucose and palm fat? Many people don't eat.

OXO list MSG, palm fat, and glucose, items many won't touch.

Miso seems to avoid such ingredients.

MawtheMerrier Sun 19-Mar-23 09:18:23

Marigold Bouillon powder every time.
I tried the Knorr “blobs” and disliked the taste anyway.

But none of those things are animal products

Maybe they are prepared near meat products and might be contaminated from chopping boards or something. Like the chocolates ‘May contain traces of nuts’.

M0nica Sun 19-Mar-23 09:34:50

Could yeast be described as an animal product?

Yeast is a living, single-cell organism. As the yeast grows, it converts its food (in the form of sugar or starch) into alcohol and carbon dioxide through the process of fermentation.

Yeast | BBC Good Food

I have often wondered whether this is a product vegans should be eating.

NotSpaghetti Sun 19-Mar-23 09:42:48

Interesting thought M0nica but I don't think it's the yeast.

FannyCornforth Sun 19-Mar-23 10:11:53

Yes, vegans can eat yeast.

If they could not / would not eat yeast, it follows that they could not / would not eat plants, as plants are more highly developed organisms.

FannyCornforth Sun 19-Mar-23 10:15:39

To be more specific, vegans would not eat mushrooms if they would not eat yeast (as they are both types of fungi)

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the hidden ingredient may be isinglass.
Isinglass is from fishes bladders.
It’s used in the making of the majority of wines but it’s listed as an ingredient (which is why you have to check if your wine is ‘vegetarian friendly’)

FannyCornforth Sun 19-Mar-23 10:32:29

Apparently, isinglass ‘causes yeast to participate out of suspension’.
I think that it gets rid of cloudiness, could that be it?
Purely to make the stock ‘blob’ (as Maw accurately put it) look more aesthetically appealing?

Could be that.

Some wines are fined by egg whites too so not suitable for vegans.

Farzanah Sun 19-Mar-23 10:53:05

I like Kallo organic stock cubes, and the vegetable ones are suitable for vegetarians, but even they contain palm fat, albeit “sustainable”, which am not keen on.
It’s amazing how many processed foods have it. The food industry would struggle to function without.

What a very unhealthy list of ingredients give me Marmite every time.

FannyCornforth Sun 19-Mar-23 11:07:25

I’ve currently got Marmite with Truffle, and it’s absolutely delicious! 😋
This week I’ve been having it on M&S cheese hot cross buns 😋😋

Farzanah Sun 19-Mar-23 11:07:42

I think you are right Allsorts
Just another form of processed food, which cooks commonly add to home cooking (me included)

Farzanah Sun 19-Mar-23 11:08:01

Stock cubes I meant!

Farzanah Sun 19-Mar-23 11:59:22

That is some er…….very “individual” taste buds you’ve got FannyC 😱

FannyCornforth Sun 19-Mar-23 12:00:56

Why?

SparklyGrandma Sun 19-Mar-23 12:01:32

I use Kallo, snap Farzanah.
