Greggs versus Pret a Manger

A recent survey suggests a North south divide with Northerners preferring Greggs and Southerners Pret a Manger. Do you have a preference? I don't use either as my bread and pastries come from my local Bakers. Not sure it is as simple as North and South but more about personal taste.

Definitely about personal taste - but I would imagine for many people, also cost. Greggs' prices are a lot cheaper than Pret. I like local independent bakers too - but my grandson does love a Greggs sausage roll, so I do pop in there occasionally to get him one.

Pret is more of a treat that Greggs. That being said, I don't like anything from Greggs since they changed their doughnuts sad

Pret also sell salads and fruit. It’s not all sandwiches and sausage rolls. Handy when I worked in London if I hadn’t time to make my own lunch. No idea about Greggs, never been in one.

As far as I am aware they provide a different service with some take away style cross over. Pret mostly sell salads, wraps and hot drinks aimed specifically at the breakfast/ lunch/coffee crowd, to eat in or take away, whilst Greggs are a bakers that also make sandwiches, hot drinks and baked goods for take away breaks and lunches. Do Greggs in the north have seating to eat in perhaps ( our local ones do not). We have both in our local town and only Pret has seating. I occasionally buy bread/ rolls in tiny Greggs but would go to Pret to sit down with a warm drink on a chilly day.

Never been in a Pret A Manger it looks expensive
I eat Greggs vegi pasties which are nice I get from the supermarket but never eaten in a Greggs either
Neither have I been in a Costa and only once in a Starbucks over inflated prices I d rather go to an independent cafe or coffee shop

I love Greggs sausage rolls.

As I am coeliac Pret is far better for me I love their salads and hot soups. We were going to get one in Hull but they pulled out I was very disappointed. The rest of my family love Greggs sausage rolls and steak bakes.

No problem here. There are lots of Greggs but no Pret A Manger’s.

Aveline Sat 10-Jun-23 16:32:18

Pret has a huge delicious selection of filled baguettes and sandwiches as well as fresh baked pastries etc. It's not all salads. Just as well I'm rarely near one.

Greggs love it! Geordie girl though!

Whitewavemark2 Sat 10-Jun-23 16:37:15

Live in south. I don’t use any, in fact never been in either, but AC both buy from Pret if necessary.

Although there is some crossover in what these outlets provide, I don't think that they are that comparable. In my experience, Prets are the more expensive of the two, seem to have more healthy choices in terms of salads and fruits, and usually have sitting in areas, which don't seem that common in Greggs. Also, Greggs seem to place more emphasis on bakery products as per pies, pasties, sausage rolls etc. I try to avoid both!

Gregg's used to be a bakers and sell fresh bread but we haven't been in one for years as it seems to be a takeaway of fast food now.

No Prêt à Manger here, the only one I've been in was at Heathrow Airport.

Katie59 Sat 10-Jun-23 17:16:33

Greg’s every time, Pret are seriously over priced, so are Costa and Starbucks.

I also miss the fresh bread that we used to be able to get in Greggs, when it was a small shop. But we do like their sausage rolls.. Now they have moved into bigger premises and have a sit down area. I haven't had anything from Pret since before lockdown, when I used to go into Reading, but I did like one of their 'yogurty, museli', type things. Can't remember the name.

Ailidh Sat 10-Jun-23 17:26:04

Northern Pret fan here!

AreWeThereYet Sat 10-Jun-23 20:38:18

Love Greggs corned beef bakes and stotties. Sadly they don't sell them in the South so we stock up when ever we go up North. Have to make do with steak bakes in the South. Rarely go in Pret a Manger.

Nannylovesshopping Sat 10-Jun-23 20:52:42

Love pret! Greggs puts lbs on me just looking in the window 😳

Maggiemaybe Sat 10-Jun-23 22:14:58

Greggs for me any day. Good, old-fashioned value with no pretensions. Their sausage rolls and bakes are better than those from our local (renowned) bakers. The grandsons love the cheery gingerbread men - they’re half the price of Pret’s, even when they’re not on offer. And where else can I get a decent cup of Fairtrade tea for £1?

I never buy Gregg's sausage rolls.
A friend used to bring them round sometimes and I found I liked them too much 😀

ginny Sat 10-Jun-23 23:09:04

Never use either of them.

Visgir1 Sun 11-Jun-23 10:03:11

Pret for me, don't think I have ever been in a Greggs.

Blossoming Sun 11-Jun-23 10:41:54

Never liked Pret. Greggs sausage rolls, on the other hand, are lovely and a rare treat! grin
