Greggs versus Pret a Manger

A recent survey suggests a North south divide with Northerners preferring Greggs and Southerners Pret a Manger. Do you have a preference? I don't use either as my bread and pastries come from my local Bakers. Not sure it is as simple as North and South but more about personal taste.

I live in the South and there are plenty of Greggs with seating. They also have fruit and salads. Pret is a bit more upmarket isn't it?

I've just googled and the county with the most Greggs is Essex bit the lARGEST greggs store is within primark in Birmingham

As far as I am aware they provide a different service with some take away style cross over. Pret mostly sell salads, wraps and hot drinks aimed specifically at the breakfast/ lunch/coffee crowd, to eat in or take away, whilst Greggs are a bakers that also make sandwiches, hot drinks and baked goods for take away breaks and lunches. Do Greggs in the north have seating to eat in perhaps ( our local ones do not). We have both in our local town and only Pret has seating. I occasionally buy bread/ rolls in tiny Greggs but would go to Pret to sit down with a warm drink on a chilly day.

A Greggs near me isn’t a bakery anymore, they used to do really good bread too sad now it’s just takeaway type food which I never buy.

I get Gregg sausage rolls from Iceland handy to have in .

I never go into a Pret either, make my own sandwich lunches for work.

Never used Greggs even as a student in the North East.
I always think of the group Lindisfarne and in one of their songs, they sing something about a greasy sausage roll and then I think of Greggs.

Bella23 yeah I did once make the mistake of buying sausage rolls there, they were really greasy.🤢

I’m not keen on Pret, I think their products are bland and am always disappointed.

I’ll go to Greggs if I want a quick drink and a cake. Their drinks are good, I’m not a massive sausage roll eater so don’t have those. Their prices are much better and the service is quick.

If I want a leisurely coffee and cake/lunch I like an independent.

It isn't a greasy sausage roll
Sittin' in a sleazy snack bar sucking,
Sickly sausage rolls.
And Greggs isn't sleazy.
Northern for Greggs-great value for money.

Marc Toni's the Itlian deli near the Central Station in N/C made far better sandwiches than Greggs even in the late '60s and 70's.
I never said Greggs was sleazy your mixing me with someone else. Have a go at them.

I have stopped buying Greggs products because the quality has changed. This happens a lot with manufacturers. They seem to think that the public have got used to certain items and will continue to buy them no matter what.
I no longer buy Ambrosia custard for the same reason. It now has palm oil in it and just doesn't taste the same.

I once bought a pasty from Greggs. It was disgusting. Greasy and full of mashed potato plus a small amount of cheese. After two bites it went in the bin.
Their coffee is good though and very reasonably priced. Bacon baps, also good and a fair price.

I occasionally have a snack and coffee in Pret. Quality food, excellent coffee.
