Sides for a tagine?

We enjoy tagines and usually have them with just rice and a salad.

What other 'sides' do you serve with them.

Couscous
Yoghurt & mint
Lemon/lime wedges
Flatbreads

Blondiescot Sun 02-Jul-23 08:24:32

Exactly what Riverwalk suggested.

Forgot to mention that I am gf.

Flatbreads made from gram flour (chickpea) are GF.

Having first had them on holiday, I make the Moroccan potato cakes, maakouda batata (think that’s how you spell it), and freeze them in bulk because I hate cooking. We love tagines, and I freeze them to use ahead too.

Casdon... just googled maakouda batata... look wonderful! ..they will be added to my repertoire.. thank you!!

Sounds delicious, I’ve found the recipe and saved it.

Totally misunderstood the heading kittylester

I started thinking about different shapes for tagines and thinking that they're kind of flattish but might have decorative sides 🤔
Duh!

Which reminded me that DD borrowed mine years ago .....

They look so good bar the coriander/ cilantro.
Suppose I could do parsley.

Callistemon21 Sun 02-Jul-23 10:55:18

I might try those

I was thinking the Moroccan roast potatoes looked nice - and easier! grin

Always couscous or bulgar wheat, yoghurt with toasted almonds on top, spiced chargrilled aubergine slices or an authentic tabbouleh.

You can get gluten free couscous, if that helps.

We don't usually have any, as neither of us like salads of any description.

Irrespective of whether we cook fish or meat in our tagine we always lay it on a bed of suitable vegetables. I thought everyone did this, so I would love to know what you actually mean when you say "tagines". What do yours consist of?

Norah Sun 02-Jul-23 11:59:44

Couscous, quinoa, or rice. Naan or other flatbreads. Potato pakora. Salad (usually carrot, tabbouleh, or fattoush). Tzatziki.

This is typical of what I usually do; other variations include chicken & apricots.

I like jewelled couscous.
I found a lovely recipe for aubergine which would go well. Pomegranate and harissa roasted aubergines.
You need the following to serve 4.
2 largish aubergines
3 tablespoons of garlic oil (I used olive oil DH doesn't like garlic)
2 tablespoons Rose harissa
2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses
2 tablespoons clear honey
Salt to season.
All you do is peel and halve the aubergines and brush with all the oil. Put on a lined baking tray and roast for 30 minutes. Mix the rest of the ingredients in a bowl, remove cooked aubergines from the oven and spread the harissa mixture over them. Roast for another 10 minutes and serve.
They are delicious.

Yes, I thought it was a new design for a tagine and was puzzling out how it would work. I assume it means accompaniments.

MiniMoon Sun 02-Jul-23 13:46:29

Red lentil flatbreads are easy to make and gf. They are a bit bland but you can add any flavours you like. Curry powder or toasted seeds (cumin, fennel etc.) would work well.

I love lamb tagine with apricots sprinkled with toasted almonds .

I serve it with any of the following -

Flat bread or nan
Rice
Couscous , which is the tradition , but not liked in my family .
Roasted peppers
Minted plain yoghurt with cucumbers , which have had some of their liquid removed . Slice them , sprinkle with salt and leave under a weighted plate until the excess water comes out .
Roast /baked potatoes/potato wedges
Lemon / lime wedges

MiniMoon 's recipe sounds absolutely delicious .
