Seeking advice about porridge oats

I used to be able to buy the sort of rolled oats that when mixed with water , stirred, and boiled within a few minutes of simmering became a smooth glutinous paste.

My problem is I have bought some sort of porridge oats that when raw seem to me to be larger grains and which never boil so they are smooth and creamy.

Can someone tell me how to select rolled oats that are smallish grains and rapidly become smooth when simmered?

I’m a fan of Quaker jumbo oats cooked in the microwave. Use half milk, half water and add fruit, nuts, seeds etc. Am planning to start buying organic oats as I recently discovered that the non organic ones are sprayed with pesticide just before harvesting. As I eat them on a daily basis I feel it may be worth paying the extra.

Aldis organic oats in a green paper bag are the best. The flakes are quite large but not jumbo or powdery, they cook into a nice creamy texture. I cook them with almond milk in the microwave for 2 minutes, stirring after 1, add some chia seeds , top with berries or banana, a blob of Alpro plain yoghurt and some crushed nuts . Yum.

I’ve always like Quaker rolled oats, in porridge and flapjack but having listened to the latest Zoe podcast on organic versus non organic I’m definitely going to change to Aldi organic oats or similar. Professor Tim Spector says non organic oats are one of the worst culprits for the bad stuff and he’s very convincing.

Thanks so much for advice! I had decanted the oats from the packet , and now understand they must be the Jumbo sort. I had not known there was such a thing ! So I will be careful to read the packet in future.

pS will also look out for the organic ones.

I just buy bog-standard Asda Smartprice, when they’ve got them. Always seem fine to me - I make it in a pan, 1 part oats to 2 of milk. Takes just minutes.
