Eggy bread - how come I’ve never made it before?

Oh yes, I liked it and tried to make it one but not very successful.

Eggy bread is usually savoury, French toast is usually sweet although opinions may vary.

I recently found some brioche-type bread but sold in slices. They were quite big - filled my smallest frying pan. They also soaked up the egg quite well (see my post above re soak/not soak)

Each slice easily used up a whole egg, so I only ate one.

Grannywaffle70 - if you fry it in a generous amount of butter - slowly, for a good amount of time - on each side, you get it nice and crispy. Takes time, though.

What a truly horrible name to give french toast!

I have never heard of using eggs in the recipe either. Here we dip the slices of white bread in milk then sprinkle cinnomon on them before frying them in butter or margarine.

TBH the thought of bread dipped in milk and then fried in butter makes me feel a bit sick - and I don’t much care for cinnamon anyway.

Thanks forgot about that,used to make it for my children years ago,I’ll be making it soon !

Flat bowl/plate
Beat couple of egg add S &P
Take slice of white bread
Dip slice bread both sides using a fork
Transfer to hot frying pan
Cook both sides
Meanwhile dip further slices until you run out of egg/bread.

Big favourite with my GC and myself with crispy bacon

French toast in our family is a Marmite or Bovril (depending on preference) sandwich dipped in beaten egg and fried. Delicious

Our family called it Egg Flip and we had it regularly for tea. Always savoury. French Toast for us was stale bread made into small butter only sandwiches and toasted under a grill. Perhaps it was lost in translation. I really don’t know where the stale bread came from because there were 9 of us and rarely was there a piece of bread left long enough to go stale.

Michel Roux in his recent cookery course and new book ,beat eggs and mik together and said it was French toast or eggy bread, he also put a filling of prawns in it and served it with pesto.
So I think you can call it whatever you like put on or in it what you like and enjoy,just as long as you don't use the name that makes you feel sick. If it does don't make or eat it.

Love eggy bread also delicious are ham sandwiches dipped in egg and fried very tasty.

Liking this post. I tried making it once but it didn’t turn out too well. What is the best way and what bread should I use ?

I haven't cooked it for years but when my dds were teenagers I always used to have to cook it on a Sunday morning as apparently it was the best cure going for a hangover! 😂

great for camping : soak thick slices in the peppered beaten eggs overnight: in the morning fry slowly and add ketchup.

In our house it was eggy bread - and French toast was bread toasted, then carefully cut through to make it thinner and toasted on the cut side.

We used to put cinnamon in the mix … or sometimes marmite !!

My kids loved it, then as teenagers had it as hangover cure.

Eggy bread/French toast - two different names for the same thing, I love it - makes a delicious breakfast or light lunch.

My grandson loves it, especially if I drop a cheese sandwich in the egg. I believe this is based on an Italian dish

My mum called it French Fried Bread. Funnily enough I nearly made some yesterday but ended up just having beans on toast with bacon. Maybe today.
