Christmas lunch alone, what food would you choose?

I have chosen to have my Christmas dinner on my own, and will see family at some point. Thinking of my favourite food, which is cheese, I have decided on a baked Camembert with home-made baguette plus a Pavlova dessert. It will be so simple to prepare and I shall enjoy it!
If you were (or are) eating alone, what would be your choice?

Warm croissants and apricot conserve for breakfast
Try this, it's delicious. Waitrose has it on special offer, and I think Tesco does too. 😋 is

Yes, that's the one I like!! 😃

I'll add it to my order.
Tesco does their own but it's a bit solid.

Sounds yummy, I will try a jar.

Bonne Maman - Caramelised Apple Spread. It was one of the three spreads you got if you ordered the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar. I didn’t even bother putting it on bread or toast, I just ate it straight out of the jar 😁 delicious doesn’t begin to describe it.

We have decided not to travel to be with ACs and GCs this Christmas. So alone, but the two of us. We will have a large rib of beef with all the trimmings, and my Black Forest trifle, with a few hm mince pies. And cheeses for the everning with nice bread and cold beef, a mix of British, French ad Swiss cheeses. Stilton, Gruyères, tomme, Morbier and Brie.

For me it would a nice platter of cold meats, good cheeses, crab meat, pickles, walnuts, French bread. Washed down with champagne. Later would be Christmas pudding and brandy cream with a glass of port.

Fleurpepper, I just looked up Black Forest trifle recipe, and it looks delicious. Can you share the recipe?

I make a log cake with chocolate biscuits and whip cream that is a family favourite, but trifle would make a nice change.

RosiesMaw Thu 23-Nov-23 20:08:03

Is this it?

Joseann Thu 23-Nov-23 20:26:40

So why is the cake on the bottom layer called Swiss roll. Does the Black Forest border Switzerland?

Callistemon21 Thu 23-Nov-23 20:37:48

A dear friend made a Black Forest trifle for the dessert when we went there for dinner. Proper cherries with Kirsch etc. She knew DH loves trifle.
What she didn't know was that he dislikes chocolate puddings, cake, anything except just chocolate! He smiled and ate a bowlful.
I had his second helping.

Oh a ‘delivered the day before’ Indian curry and paswari naan and a bottle of stones ginger wine or cream sherry or even a baileys if I could afford one

I just made it up from top of head many years ago.

Chocolate sponge, kirsch, black cherries with juice cooked down with a tad of cornflour, kirsch and sugar, custard, whipped cream and black cherries with shavings of good quality chocolate.

Such a great success with the family- never knew there is an 'official recipe'.

A couple of years ago I spent Christmas on my own. I was not looking forward to it as had lost my lovely Dad earlier in the year
, my dh a couple of years before and my friends who I could have spent Christmas with were both vulnerable and shielding from Covid. I was also waiting on the results of a covid test so felt very alone. In the end it was actually fine. I had avocado, prawns and smoked salmon for starters along with a nice bottle of fizz. Can't remember the rest if the meal but did have a big box of my favourite chocolates on the go too!
.

GrandtanteJE65 - I am so sorry about your husband. Totally understand that you would rather be alone on Christmas Day.

Another ‘delivered the day before’ curry. Chicken dhansak, Saag Alo, couple of poppadoms and a Tiger beer thank you.

My friend used chocolate blancmange too or you could use cornflour and cocoa powder. It was just delicious.
Such a pity her efforts were wasted on DH although he never let her know.

A small portion of moules mariniere, followed by a Barnsley chop (cut across the saddle to give a double chop) with dauphinois potatoes and green beans, and an individual Christmas pudding to follow with lashings of brandy cream. A good Rioja to drink with the meat and a glass of Oban malt whiskey to follow the pudding.

Think I would eat out at a hotel, or have an M and S ready meal. Could be tempted by M and S hot chicken tikka masala.

For a cozy Christmas lunch alone, I would choose a simple yet comforting meal.
I might start with a warm bowl of butternut squash soup, garnished with a dollop of sour cream and some fresh herbs. check out recipe on www.lifestylefoodies.com/the-best-keto-butternut-squash-soup-for-you/
For the main course, I would opt for roasted chicken with garlic and rosemary, served alongside roasted vegetables like carrots, Brussels sprouts, and parsnips.
To finish off the meal on a sweet note, I would indulge in a slice of homemade apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Oatcakes, grapes and blue cream cheese. Daughter in law's vegetarian cottage pie. Mugs of tea with milk. Maybe Tesco lemon curd yog.

No idea why Swiss roll is called such. And yes, parts of Northern Switzerland border Black Forest.

I make mine with chocolate sponge. Home made as GS VERY allergic to egg. And Bird's Custard with a bit of double cream and a tad of vanilla essence, for same reasons.
