Christmas lunch alone, what food would you choose?

I have chosen to have my Christmas dinner on my own, and will see family at some point. Thinking of my favourite food, which is cheese, I have decided on a baked Camembert with home-made baguette plus a Pavlova dessert. It will be so simple to prepare and I shall enjoy it!
If you were (or are) eating alone, what would be your choice?

Sounds perfect. I'd choose the same if I were alone. Have to have lashings of butter on the baguette though. Heaven when dipped into the drippy camembert - yum.
Absolutely no good for my waistline but, hey, it's Christmas !

I think I'd go with Shysal's menu - or maybe go a little more adventurous with a cheese fondue.

One of those pre prepared lobsters from M&S and a little salad with fresh orange and pea shoots and a glass of champagne. Trifle for afters!

I'd buy a very small turkey crown because If I was alone I wouldn't want to miss out on Xmas dinner. I'd just cook it for myself and possibly invite someone to share it with me.

I’ve spent about 4 Christmas’s on my own and always cooked a full roast, albeit some ready prepared eg roast potatoes, swede, Yorkshire's, always cooked enough for Boxing Day 🎄 Throughly enjoyed.

Great post…I like the idea of that German Shepherds😁🩷

I’m going to be on my own this year, as both AC are going to in-laws on Christmas Day. I’m fine with it, less stress! I don’t eat pastry normally, so I’m going to treat myself to an M&S Best Ever steak pie. Will have that with some creamy mash and green beans. Dessert will be a posh lemon tart with some Greek yogurt and a few blueberries. Nice claret to wash it down with.

Love how M&S is the food choice for the majority! I would do exactly the same. I will be with family on Christmas Day and then on my own for the rest of Christmas and new year, you’d think I’d get used to it but it’s hard sometimes especially when some friends complain about the hassle of having so much company over Christmas …. They have no idea rally.

I’d cook a Turkey crown and eat the rest of it over Christmas, and have all the trimmings, which would not include sprouts, but would probably have parsnips. I went off sprouts after I had Covid, and I haven’t been able to eat them since. I’d buy a ready made dessert from Waitrose or M & S. I’d eat in from of the TV, maybe with a glass of rosé, which is what we always had when I was a child.

Then a big old wallow on whatever I want to watch on TV, or maybe stream a film or TV series I haven’t seen yet.

‘In FRONT of the TV’ - how annoying!

I will be eating Christmas lunch alone but I dont plan anything special as I am not a foodie. Whatever I happen to get out of the fridge or freezer that morning.

That sounds perfect to me. Both my son and DiL are working Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so I’ve a very quiet 2 days

Yes, you can buy everything ready prepared so no peeling, chopping, not even gravy making!

Reported. The spammers are everywhere.

But GNHQ aren't!

I reported two spam threads days ago and they're still there.

Lobster, scallops or prawns for the main. My husband doesn’t eat seafood. Followed by trifle. It’s not Christmas unless there’s trifle! But I’d vary the ingredients to jazz it up.

i will be going back to how i had christmas every year since my son was 5, i would make a buffet and he could help himself and sit with a paper plate and his new toys.
this year it will be supermarket party food, mini pizza, sausage rolls, spring and vegatable rolls and anything i fancy, afters will be mini frozen desserts, i am spending christmas on my own, my choice, i can sit all day in my pjs and eat chocolate. this is my ideal day.

Bazza Sat 25-Nov-23 12:18:00

Lobster Thermidor, M and S again, chips and a crunchy winter salad, followed by profiteroles, and really cold champagne with a glass out of the freezer. If I could managed it, some Hotel Chocolate liqueur chocolates.

Ive had lots of solo Christmas days O in still have the traditional 3 course albeit over several hours

Your lunch sounds quite delicious and I very much hope you enjoy it!

If I was alone I’d either have a simple pasta dish or a piece of very nice steak, with onions and mushrooms and lots of fresh veg. Washed down with a glass of bubbly and finished off with an indulgent M&S pud.

I’d start the day with freshly ground coffee, warm croissants and Buck’s Fizz and finish the day off with mince pies, brandy butter and a large baileys! Cheers x

I would plan a nice nut roast and trimmings for one, a mince pie, and a glass of wine, all prepped beforehand and a timetable for the day, with a morning and afternoon walk planned, listen to some music in the morning with some nice coffee, and then the rest of the day spent quietly watching a film or box set of my choice, and maybe read a nice book in a comfy armchair, make a few calls, and have a nice hot bubble bath at bed time and would relish the me time and the lack of clearing up.

Currently I'm still chief cook ( and food shopper) for the family of 10 guests including ex husband ( and at the ex matrimonial home) on both Christmas day and boxing day and dream having of one on my own, where perhaps other family members would just pop over to my little house for a mince pie and cup of tea in the afternoon..

That's not to say I would feel them same if it were the first Christmas after a family bereavement but I would appreciate the rest rather than the stress of it all.

I agree. This is my 4th Christmas as a widow, and nobody else can really understand what it’s like to spend such a long time on your own with no conversation.

HiPpyChick57 Sat 25-Nov-23 13:27:07

I would still do a “roast”, well as a vegan it would probably be a chicken substitute (because believe it or not some of them taste lovely)with all my favourite veg and gluten free gravy. Leaving loads for a fry up on Boxing Day.

Fae1 Sat 25-Nov-23 13:29:30

Have spent a few Christmases on my own over the past few years. Always cook a festive meal - Turkey or chicken with all the trimmings. I have a large freezer and make meals for several days with what's left over after boxing day. Well worth the effort.

GrumpyGrandy Sat 25-Nov-23 13:32:30

Me too!

Bunty24 Sat 25-Nov-23 13:47:27

Last Christmas I ate solo and did a full Christmas dinner with pudding etc. and really enjoyed it. This year I’m wondering if lobster or prawns might be a nice change but suspect I’d miss the traditional.
