Hi everyone......
I'm thrilled to join this awesome forum my name is Edward Guerra from Los Angeles and I'm a total foodie at heart. Whether it's trying out new recipes, exploring local eateries, or experimenting with ingredients in my own kitchen, I'm always on the lookout for exciting culinary adventures.

I wanted to kick off my forum journey by posing a question to all you seasoned members out there:

What's your absolute favorite go to comfort food?

We all have that one dish that never fails to lift our spirits or transport us back to a cherished memory. It could be a hearty bowl of soup, a decadent dessert, or even a snack that holds a special place in your heart. I'd love to hear about your comfort food choices and the stories behind them!

Feel free to share recipes, recommendations, or just your fond memories associated with your favorite comfort food. I can't wait to learn from the seasoned foodies in this community and hopefully, make some new friends along the way.

Looking forward to the delicious discussions ahead....

I think it would probably be roast chicken with roasted root vegetables, broccoli stems and gravy

Susiewong65 Thu 11-Jan-24 18:59:53

Welcome Edward, roast chicken is my favourite.

Beans on toast with cheese on top 🤤

If I'm feeling poorly, runny scrambled egg on its own usually helps to soothe. For sheer indulgence and pampering tinned rice does the trick nicely. Pretty much instant success on both counts. Does it for me every time.

Roast beef (medium rare) with roast potatoes, roast parsnips, mashed swede (lots of butter & white pepper), brussels sprouts and a piece of Yorkshire pudding made in a large tin.

My mum's homemade faggots that she used to make with her mincer clamped to the side of the table and then wrap them in cawl. She served them with soaked boxed peas.

My mum's pea soup made with the cooking liquor and left overs from a boiled ham and boxed peas, finely diced carrots & potatoes.

Sphagetti al sugo di pomodoro, preferably eaten in Naples!

Sadly these foods are now only in my dreams.

Shepherd's Pie, with a grilled potato top. Preferably on a Monday.

A home made fish pie with good chunks of smoked haddock, cod and salmon topped with creamy mashed potato and a sprinkling of cheese. Nothing comes close.

Auntieflo Fri 12-Jan-24 08:47:49

That sound good, mind if I copy?

Well, doesn’t matter what the intentions of an OP is if it makes an interesting thread.

About cheese on toast, which cheese? I say Cheddar.

Juliet27 Fri 12-Jan-24 09:33:57

Maybe it’s all for a survey

Nice thread and welcome Edward. Comfort food from childhood would probably be mother's Steak and Kidney pie which you don't see now unless you make it yourself which I can but dont - too unhealthy DH would push the pastry to one side. Like many of us we try to have a healthy diet and the really comforting food seems to always be the unhealthy stuff so its a difficult question. If I eat something lovely like Haagen Daaz Belgian Chocolate ice cream I feel very guilty. I love very crusty bread (not sourdough) and cheese but again would feel very guilty and fat so if I must do that it has to be by main meal of the day. I still love a steak pie in a pub though on the rarest of rare occasions.

My mother’s cheese pudding would be high on the list, but it’s rather a faff (all those breadcrumbs) so I hardly ever make it.

Pasta cooked in chicken stock with lots of grated cheese is a nice quick favourite, or cheese on toast, with onion and lots of Worcester Sauce.

Mince and tatties. Mince from a good butcher (Galloways anyone)😂
Cooked with carrots turnip and onions. Potatoes mashed with lashings of good butter.

crazyH Sat 27-Jan-24 12:41:04

Anything I don’t have to cook - a Chinese takeaway, if I have to choose.

Witzend Sun 28-Jan-24 11:11:25

Sago

This was posted 03.46 LA time.

That would explain the ‘favorite’ and saves me from getting pedantically irritated by it.

NotSpaghetti Sun 28-Jan-24 11:16:51

Welcome Edward -

Mine would be either baked potato with lots of butter and cheese or sausages, mash, gravy and (probably) peas.
