Now that we are getting this lovely fresh milk from the farm DH would like a rice pudding. I cant find pudding rice anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find it or can anyone tell me what other rice can be used - recipe would help please.

I have had the same problem and have resorted to using the ordinary long grain which is O K. My daughter had the same problem and found it advertised online as being at Asda but she could not find any.

I blame Brexit

A risotto rice is very similar to the pudding rice because it is round-grained and will have a creamier consistency. (Arborio or carnaroli). But normal long-grain rice will also do at a pinch.

Co op and Morrisons still stock pudding rice.

I've just remembered someone was asking about this a while back. They said they couldn't find it in the supermarket. Someone said it is with the ready-made rice puddings (Ambrosia), not with the other rice's.

Arborio rice is fine, though some swear by long slow cooked basmati. Cant stand the stuff personally, the smell makes me heave, and I was hit every day for not eating it when in hospital with scarlet fever for a month
aged 5, and spent many hours in the Bursar's office at school looking at a congealing smelly bowl, but could not get it down. Good luck to those who can enjoy it! smile

Waitrose have it.

Greenfinch Mon 03-Jun-24 14:07:12

It must be a regional thing as Morrison’s and Co-Op definitely don’t have it in my area. I have yet to explore Waitrose but I don’t hold out much hope as all our supermarkets are relatively small.

I suppose you mean online but I don’t shop on line and I can’t find it in the shops.

I just had a quick google, Tesco, Co-op, Asda and Amazon.

I get mine in Tesco but sometimes have a job finding it as it’s not with the rice but it’s usually there somewhere.

Tesco have it on their online shop, I put pudding rice in and it came up £1.45 for 500yrs , have a look in the baking section.

Does anyone remember the A A Milne poem. I will quote just one verse.
What is the matter with Mary Jane?
She's perfectly well and she hasn't a pain,
And it's lovely rice pudding for dinner again!
What is the matter with Mary Jane?

As a small girl I loved A A Milne's poetry, but I just did not understand this one. I must have been 8 or 9 before I suddenly realised that the problem was that Mary Jane didn't like rice pudding. This was a revelation to me. Before then it had never occurred to me that anyone wouldn't like rice pudding.

Sainsbury’s is where I have bought mine, in a store, not online, but it is not where you think it will be! I had to ask a member of staff where it was.

Pudding rice, found in most supermarkets, I got mine from Tesco. It is not in the savoury rice section. Baking area, where I got mine, after all it is pudding rice.

MiniMoon Mon 03-Jun-24 16:18:13

I use arborio rice if I haven't any pudding rice. It makes a good pudding.
I would like to know where tapioca has gone. None of the supermarkets I've looked in have any.

AreWeThereYet Mon 03-Jun-24 16:22:59

You might find it listed as short-grain white or brown rice. I get it in Waitrose. Don't think Sainsbury had it last time I looked, or the Co-op.

Witzend Mon 03-Jun-24 16:38:01

I used to have difficulty finding it, until I realised that in their wisdom (!) supermarkets mostly shelve it with all the rice pudding, not with other rice!

But BTW, you can make it with risotto rice - I have done so successfully when there was a load of milk to use up at DD’s and I couldn’t be bothered to go out and look for the ‘proper’ stuff.

I buy mine from Tesco, it was in the aisle with the tinned rice etc.

I can’t find ground rice anywhere either.

I made a rice pudding with long grain rice .
It tasted nice , but the consistency was wrong .

I used a trick , which my clever daughter uses to thicken soups - I took some of the cooked rice and milk and liquidised them .Then returned them to the pudding and it was much improved .
