Now that we are getting this lovely fresh milk from the farm DH would like a rice pudding. I cant find pudding rice anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find it or can anyone tell me what other rice can be used - recipe would help please.

Pudding Rice , is a nightmare to find in most supermarkets . You will never find it within the aisles of ‘ Rice’ or even ‘ Pasta’ which is where searches invariably take you .
In Sainsbury’s & indeed Morrisons it can be found within the baking or tinned fruit aisles 😅
The thing I can no longer find is “ Flaked Rice” which makes a lovely pudding .

In Asda it’s shelved close to the Ambrosia creamed rice.

The other day I had milk to use up, so made a 2 pint rice pudding, and dh is away until Thursday night, so I shall have to eat the whole lot myself. 🙂🐷

Our local co op store had it yesterday.
I’m having trouble getting cornflour.

I use short white rice, raisins, sugar, hot Earl Grey tea, overnight. Morning I stir in tins of coconut milk. No milk&eggs like mum's - good regardless.

I’ll be out on the trail again today!

You can get it but it’s not easy, now I’ve got to find some, I have used risotto rice and that was fine.

Tesco definitely have it - but if you ask some of the store colleagues they might not know what you mean............some. months ago the store had undergone a complete reconfiguration and annoyingly 'things had been moved' (don't you just hate it when they do that?!). I asked a young member of staff where the pudding rice was and she took me to the tinned rice pudding. section, I explained that I wanted a bag of uncooked PUDDING RICE.........she didn't know that there was such a thing. I did eventually locate it though, all by myself because no one else had a clue hmm

Pudding rice is available from Amazon!

Yes, they sell a lot of groceries and you can have shopping delivered from Morrisons via amazon, I think it is different stores depending on where you live.

I made a rice pudding with long grain rice .
It tasted nice , but the consistency was wrong .

I used a trick , which my clever daughter uses to thicken soups - I took some of the cooked rice and milk and liquidised them .Then returned them to the pudding and it was much improved .

I can’t find ground rice anywhere either.

I buy mine from Tesco, it was in the aisle with the tinned rice etc.

I used to have difficulty finding it, until I realised that in their wisdom (!) supermarkets mostly shelve it with all the rice pudding, not with other rice!

But BTW, you can make it with risotto rice - I have done so successfully when there was a load of milk to use up at DD’s and I couldn’t be bothered to go out and look for the ‘proper’ stuff.

You might find it listed as short-grain white or brown rice. I get it in Waitrose. Don't think Sainsbury had it last time I looked, or the Co-op.

I use arborio rice if I haven't any pudding rice. It makes a good pudding.
I would like to know where tapioca has gone. None of the supermarkets I've looked in have any.

Pudding rice, found in most supermarkets, I got mine from Tesco. It is not in the savoury rice section. Baking area, where I got mine, after all it is pudding rice.

Calendargirl Mon 03-Jun-24 16:07:17

Sainsbury’s is where I have bought mine, in a store, not online, but it is not where you think it will be! I had to ask a member of staff where it was.

Does anyone remember the A A Milne poem. I will quote just one verse.
What is the matter with Mary Jane?
She's perfectly well and she hasn't a pain,
And it's lovely rice pudding for dinner again!
What is the matter with Mary Jane?

As a small girl I loved A A Milne's poetry, but I just did not understand this one. I must have been 8 or 9 before I suddenly realised that the problem was that Mary Jane didn't like rice pudding. This was a revelation to me. Before then it had never occurred to me that anyone wouldn't like rice pudding.

Tesco have it on their online shop, I put pudding rice in and it came up £1.45 for 500yrs , have a look in the baking section.

tanith Mon 03-Jun-24 15:31:18

I get mine in Tesco but sometimes have a job finding it as it’s not with the rice but it’s usually there somewhere.
