Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches?
Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings.
But some are really worth it.
Favourites?
Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me.
Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.

Pan Bagnat. I made one once and reading a recipe today encourages me to make it again this week. Now where did I put those weights?

We once had a tea party at work and one lady brought curried squid and spinach sandwiches on white bread. She stood proudly by her plate but absolutely none of us could face trying one.

No, Aveline - but fig jam is good with tangy cheeses!

I sometimes try what seems to be very different sandwich fillings from my usual favourites. I've had some lovely ones eg, goats cheese and sliced pear or crispy peppers and cheese.
However, I have not enjoyed many of my late Granny's 'novelty' sandwiches. Sardine and fig anyone?

I’d forgotten peanut and banana on granary bread. I loved Grace Dent’s book “Hungry” - couldn’t put it down.

My mum used to make me Shiphams beef paste, with nice peppery cress.
Mud and grass, we called it, and I used to put the metal circle that sealed the paste jar on my wrist, like a bracelet as long as mum didn't see me

A prawn cocktail sandwich on brown bread, with a side of crisps.

MissAdventure Fri 12-Jul-24 22:36:47

I am currently reading Comfort Foods by food critic Grace Dent.

She talks to people to discover what food cheers them up when they feel low and the sandwich combos are awesome and very weird.

A banana sandwich.

Sometimes with apricot jam.

grannypiper Fri 12-Jul-24 20:47:19

Oh and in forth place is a chicken and mushroom Pot noodle butty.

grannypiper Fri 12-Jul-24 20:46:28

As a proud Scot i can honestly say an onion pie on a morning roll is the food of the Gods closely followed by corned beef, red onion and mayo, in third place is cheap white bread butter with cheese and onion crisps.

Ah, Pane di Altamura NotSpaghetti. The stuff of dreams.

kittylester Fri 12-Jul-24 18:00:21

🥹. Yes, but maybe adding the recipe makes a difference !
(I think it just sounds patronising! )

Fish fingers - brown bread;
Bacon, lettuce and tomato, slathered generously with Hellmans, in a toasted panini. Bliss!

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 16:44:50

I had sugar sandwiches as a young child too.
