Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches?
Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings.
But some are really worth it.
Favourites?
Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me.
Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.

Thursday - The 11th of July 2024 ..

Our favourite sandwich is The Classic French Croquet Monsieur, which for those who never had it, the ingredients are
Gruyère or Emmenthal with jambón, French Ham, Béchamel and French bread or similar ..

We enjoy having it in the autumn and winter for a starter to a brunch at home ..

Really- does anybody else need Croque Monsieur explained to them?
(Cheese and ham toastie to thee and me) although perhaps Frenchgal ‘s version is designed to be eaten while playing croquet ?

Bechamel sauce though? That elevates a cheese and ham toastie

When I was working in London in the 60s there were several sandwich bars in the area with an amazing array of fillings. One of my favourites was cream cheese, honey and walnuts. There was also a selection of different breads and the dense cheesecake which you don't see very often.

A friend who came from the NW coast used to talk about connie onnies. Sandwiches made with condensed milk. I think I've spelt it right.

We recently bought an air fryer and sometimes have toasted cheese and ham sandwiches. Delicious but rather fattening I think.

Only as far as your mouth gringrin

Frenchgal's version is correct. You have to have the bechamel. Some of the bakers serve the mixture in croissants which are delicious.

Current favs

Bacon (piping hot in white bread with brown sauce)

Sourdough, with Avocado

Smoked salmon and cream cheese on granary

Coronation chicken on anything
Ditto smooth peanut butter

I don’t like cheese and ham together. Total pleb I know. I don’t care.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 19:45:35

I'm going to change my name to "miss not the slightest bit adventurous".

Some of these sandwiches sound delicious, and I've never tried them.

Not at all, GSM.
Growing up in a household where money was tight, we were never, ever, allowed cheese and ham on the same plate. Each was considered a luxury, so it was a case of one or the other.

This has tickled Mr. I since the day I met him. My children are similarly bemused that I still can't bring myself to deviate from this ingrained rule!

I also found it difficult to be adventurous in my choice of sandwich filling but love trying different things.

Frenchgal I'm sure that most of us are aware of, or have even eaten, Croque Monsieur.

Or possibly dribbling down your chin. A chip butty (sorry, Liverpool born and bred) is not a chip butty unless the butter is running down your arm when you bite into it !!

I have a similar quirk GSM. I love a cheese sandwich. I also love a tomato sandwich. Can’t stand the two together. Don’t know why, I just don’t. I think that makes me a pleb too !!

Godminster or Cornish Quartz cheddar cheese not too thickly sliced with a small amount of white onion on really fresh white crusty bread, liberally buttered with Jersey farmhouse butter and tomatoes from the greenhouse on the side.

Otherwise, like goosebump, I love a fresh crab sandwich which must include the brown meat, good butter but absolutely no mayonnaise which totally destroys the flavour.

Like GSM I also don't like cheese and ham together as you end up tasting neither.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Jul-24 20:14:41

Oh, yuk. I have never had a chip butty and the thought of one makes me feel sick. I love chips but not in a sarnie. 🤮

Seriously GSM you should try it. I’m from the home of the chip butty. Would I put you on a bum steer ? It has to be white, sliced bread and it has to be butter, not the diluted stuff in tubs. The chips have to be hot and crisp and salted - vinegar is optional. And as I said, if the butter doesn’t run down your hand when you bite into it, you haven’t made it properly !! Trust me.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Jul-24 20:25:38

Oh no, never!

kittylester Thu 11-Jul-24 20:26:54

Stop it pammie!

dogsmother Thu 11-Jul-24 20:40:57

Cheese and pickle.
Egg mayonnaise
Coronation chicken
Crab
Chip butty
Bacon and egg ( baguette)
Tuna
Tomato made by my sister only.
Any of the above depending on my mood, love them all.

merlotgran Thu 11-Jul-24 20:44:05

Frenchgal I'm sure that most of us are aware of, or have even eaten, Croque Monsieur

Or stick a fried egg on top and call it, Cheesy Hammy Eggy!

No béchamel though.

Mamardoit Thu 11-Jul-24 21:06:32

A proper cheese and onion crusty cob made with Red Leicester takes some beating. Cob = crusty bread roll for those not from the East Midlands.

BLT
Tuna and cucumber
Ham with English mustard or horseradish.
Egg and cress.
Crisp or chip butties.
Home made strawberry jam.

They are all good.

Lizzies Thu 11-Jul-24 21:15:33

The best sandwich I ever had was a cheese and pickle one, the first proper food I had after a bad bout of flu. Favourite sandwich is corned beef and beetroot.

NotSpaghetti Thu 11-Jul-24 21:18:45

I don't honestly think I've ever had Mother's Pride, RosiesMaw, certainly not knowingly.

My family never bought sliced bread and I only ever bought sliced wholemeal bread when on "cricket tea" duty.

I don't remember ever buying sliced white at all - although I do remember eating sliced white in the university canteen now I think about it.

NotSpaghetti Thu 11-Jul-24 21:20:35

I'm with Maddyone - cheese and beetroot... yum.

NotSpaghetti Thu 11-Jul-24 21:22:42

Anniebach

Anything with marmite

Marmite, peanut butter and lots of watercress or rocket. 😍
