Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches?
Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings.
But some are really worth it.
Favourites?
Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me.
Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.

Mushed up egg and onion is my favourite, I bring them to every picnic.

Norah Thu 11-Jul-24 14:44:08

Homegrown peeled sliced tomatoes, smashed avocados, on homemade bread.

I have to eat gluten free bread so there’s not much choice (if any) if I’m buying a sandwich but at home nothing beats a plain ham and mustard sandwich on white bread.

I love a salted chip butty. My idea of hell is a egg and mayonnaise/salad cream sandwich. The smell makes me nauseous.

I rarely buy a sandwich but my own favourites are (in no particular order)

coronation chicken,
Cheshire cheese, spring onion & mayo
smoked salmon, cucumber and tartare sauce
Turkey, cranberry and stuffing

All on thinly sliced buttered homemade wholemeal. 😋

You’ve reminded me there of the Christmas dinner sandwich - turkey and all the accompaniments. I could just fancy one now!

Does anyone remember the episode of Friends where Monica gives her secret of the perfect turkey sandwich - an extra slice of gravy soaked bread in the middle. I’ve always wanted to try it but somehow there’s never enough gravy left !!

Pammie, you must photograph and post the results of your mission smile

Will definitely post pics when they come out of the oven - most probably Sunday. I can almost taste them for Sunday breakfast with fresh coffee. Hope they live up to expectations !

Thick ham from the butcher is well buttered bread.

Toasted ham, red Leicester, sliced red onion and sliced tomato.

Toasted tuna mayo with some grated cheese and chopped red onion.

I make Toasted sandwiches by putting mayo on the outside of the bread and then dry frying in a hot pan.

I would love a salty chip buttie on thickly buttered Mother's Pride - sadly, a thing of the past now I have a gf diet.

I am drooling here!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Jul-24 15:07:08

Ooh, so many. Egg mayonnaise with chives, ham and tomato, coronation chicken, crab with cucumber, cheddar cheese (with tomato, not pickle), bacon, BLT - but definitely not fish fingers or fried egg.

Cheese Wotsits and mayonnaise.
Cheese and Onion crisps and mayonnaise.
Bacon and tomato and mayonnaise.
Tuna and mayonnaise.
Yes, I like mayonnaise with everything. Including my dinner.

Almost scared to ask this - when you say dinner ?

All dinners except anything with gravy Pammiel.
No wonder I've got high cholesterol!
I do have a light mayo though.

Almost any sandwiches will do, many of those stated here I quite like frivolous crustless finger sandwiches served with a cream tea, in fact I prefer them to all the tiny cakes served on the to tier above the scones.

Mollygo Thu 11-Jul-24 15:14:16

So many to choose from. Lots of lovely suggestions on here, but pickle, except for sliced pickled onions is the kiss of death to any sandwich for me.
Favourites-a demi-baguette from Lidl with sliced egg and sliced tomato.

Sliced banana on buttered bread, not fussy about the colour of the bread.

Hot bacon on a toasted, buttered chive and red onion bagel. (So much easier and cleaner with the air fryer.)

JaneJudge my daughter used to love egg sandwiches with salad cream when she was young. Unfortunately no one would sit next to her on school coach trips as they couldn't stand the smell.grin

For me it has to be crab sandwiches with granary bread or crispy bacon with white toasted bread.

Granmarderby10 Thu 11-Jul-24 15:21:03

Currentl shop bought sandwich obsession is Wensleydale and carrot chutney on multigrain (M&S)

But always loved egg mayo with cress, or salmon or crab spread (with cucumber a squeeze of lemon (essential) and on crusty rolls - the type that only live for one day break into smitherines when cut.😋

OR proper ham on aforementioned crusty rolls with just a speck of Lee & Perrins.

And last but not least thinly sliced home roasted beef (preferably with dripping) if only! - dab of Coleman’s or sometimes raw sliced onion on firm white sliced bread.

Don’t appreciate fridged ones though much better at room temperature

I too love anything with Marmite, but yesterday, I was at a bit of a loose end to find something for lunch - when I took a notion for a crisp sandwich! Haven't had one for years - so it really hit the spot!

Jane43 Thu 11-Jul-24 16:02:14

Nothing fancy for me, cheese and tomato, cheese and beetroot or tinned red salmon with a bit of vinegar.

teabagwoman Thu 11-Jul-24 16:29:13

Bacon, lettuce and tomato.
White bread and banana.
White bread, peanut butter and jam.
Wholemeal bread, butter, sugar and cinnamon.

Jaxjacky Thu 11-Jul-24 16:30:05

Egg and watercress
Mashed banana and marmite
Fish fingers with salad cream
Thinly sliced beef with horseradish
I don’t often eat a sandwich so consider one a treat.

Claregreybear Thu 11-Jul-24 16:51:15

Crispy bacon on thickly buttered brown bread. Yummy.

bridie54 Thu 11-Jul-24 16:55:03

Am a sandwich lover.
Bought ones probably Bacon Brie and cranberry, or Coronation chicken.
At home I often have simple cheese and pickle (no favourite there).
Never tried crab yet ….
My love of sandwiches started early because apparently I was out once with my mum and her friend offered me a cream cake which would have been a real treat at that time. But my polite reply was “No thank you, I’d rather have a meat paste piece”
“piece” being what we Scots call a sandwich.

Harris27 Thu 11-Jul-24 17:02:41

Prawn and mayonnaise.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Jul-24 17:09:24

Oh yes Harris, forgot to mention that one.

Frenchgalinspain Thu 11-Jul-24 17:11:45

Thursday - The 11th of July 2024 ..

Our favourite sandwich is The Classic French Croquet Monsieur, which for those who never had it, the ingredients are
Gruyère or Emmenthal with jambón, French Ham, Béchamel and French bread or similar ..

We enjoy having it in the autumn and winter for a starter to a brunch at home ..

shysal Thu 11-Jul-24 17:18:16

I'm with you Maw on bacon, Brie and cranberry - preferably toasted.

Ham and ready salted crisps on white sliced bread.

Pammiel, I often make 'chelsea' buns with Marmite and cheese, or with red pesto, cheese and crispy bacon or prosciutto (pizza-like flavours) glazed with olive oil.

I am so hungry now!!

teabagwoman Thu 11-Jul-24 17:20:34

I forgot roast beef and Stilton on good wholemeal bread.
