Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches?
Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings.
But some are really worth it.
Favourites?
Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me.
Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.

Fresh crab on granary bread, preferably with a view of the Norfolk coast!

ripe tomatoes on crusty white bread.
Second choices
Egg and cress
Tuna and cucumber

Smoked salmon and cream cheese
Oh yes.

The dog found a taste for those too, surprising how a small dog managed to reach up to the dining table!

Here up north we ( well some of us) like a chip butty.
The chips must be salted and put on the bread while hot so that the butter melts. It must be white sliced bread, on this occasion brown won’t do.
You can feel your arteries hardening while eating it.

DH thinks I'm being disgusting if I eat a chip butty.

Being from the SW he just doesn't get it.

I still likd egg mayo.

When I was rushing around in my lunch-hour I used to buy M&S prawn and mayonnaise on oat bread, always my favourite then.

I like cranberries with turkey or with bacon and brie, the cranberries mustn't be too sweet.

I rarely buy a sandwich but my own favourites are (in no particular order)

coronation chicken,
Cheshire cheese, spring onion & mayo
smoked salmon, cucumber and tartare sauce
Turkey, cranberry and stuffing

All on thinly sliced buttered homemade wholemeal. 😋

Definitely crab for me, white crusty bread, butter and dressed crab with a lemon slice on the side.
I also really like a tuna mayo with grated cheese panini.

If buying one, prawn mayo would be first choice. When visiting my grandmother for tea, it would always be date and apple. She used to spend ages chopping them up, now I whizz them up in a food processor!

A crisp sandwich is nice, but a crisp roll is better, when the roll has got to the very slightly chewy state.

They are easy to make too...but I am quite lazy smile

I make my own bread and have been quite successful with Chelsea buns of late - similar to pinwheels in that you roll out the dough, fill it and then slice and bake. I would think cheese and marmite would work quite well. Think I’m on a mission now !!

My late husband used to put plain salted crisps on banana sandwiches. He said the mix of salty and sweet, soft and crunchy textures was sensational !! I’ve never been brave enough to try it myself.

Not sure I’d agree with grated cheese tasting of sick (although I think it might depend on the cheese !!) but I do think that grating it definitely makes it taste different. I also think it tastes different depending on whether it’s finely or coarsely grated - although I might be overthinking it now !!

Anything with marmite
have you tried the M&S cheese and marmite puff pastry whirls? they are delicious and last about 2 minutes

Ooooh,i so want

I’m just on my way to do an M&S shop. Guess what’s been added to my shopping list ? I love marmite with cheese, and these sound heavenly.

I love cheese and onion on white bread or barmcake. There was a little bakery stall in our local market but when the market closed and moved over the road the bakery bought a unit further away. His c and o sandwiches were lovely with proper fresh cheese and all ingredients displayed in tubs. Now he's moved and I decided to call in and get one. He made the sandwich in the back and wrapped it up. I was so looking forward to it but was so disappointed. A little bit of red onion and a couple of cheese slices. I won't be going there again.
I don't mind any sandwich but I hate this obsession of filling them with lots of mayonnaise that makes the bread all soggy.
Banana mashed up on brown bread is another favourite.

Pammie1 Thu 11-Jul-24 13:47:17

I love a good fish finger and pea sandwich, on white bread. Has to be garden peas mashed up with a fork and then fish fingers on top. Lots of salt and a smattering of tartare sauce. My current favourite is a crispy bacon and avocado sandwich. Hot crispy bacon and soft sliced avocado on hovis granary bread. Heaven - if you like avocados of course !!

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 13:42:56

From childhood. Beef dripping and also haslet.

my mum used to like a a bar of fry's cream chocolate in a sandwich...yuk.

pably15 Thu 11-Jul-24 13:38:49

hard boiled egg with mayo and chives for me..

Daddima Thu 11-Jul-24 13:36:51

Egg and tomato on white bread always takes me back to the sandwiches I got on school trips, and my aunt always gave us mashed banana and Cadbury’s Flake on white bread and butter.
I have a friend who says there is no food which cannot be a sandwich filling. Scotch pie in a roll is a particular favourite.
