Grrrrrr Melons

I bought a honeydew melon from Aldi on Tuesday and was anticipating the gloriousness of its juicy interior. I cut it up into bite size pieces and ... aaaaargh, it was hard, unjuicy and inedible for my sensitive mouth. Very disappointed 😞
Yesterday I bought another honeydew melon from Waitrose - once more feeling that anticipation ...
NOOOOOO! this one is exactly the same!
I now have two tupperware containers full of inedible melon, and a) have no idea what to do with them, b) dread my future melon purchases. Any ideas/tips/ripe melons?!

No tips, but I’d be furious, I love melon!

JackK Thu 15-Aug-24 12:04:39

Ahh Cossy, you feel my pain! I'm tempted to take them back, but would feel a bit embarrassed with two tupperware containers 😜

I've had the opposite! Many melons we've bought are mushy in the middle this year. It seems very hard to get them right.

JackK Thu 15-Aug-24 12:09:15

Onward and upward, I wish there was a melon-swapping service 😄

OnwardandUpward Thu 15-Aug-24 12:13:43

Haha I like watermelons best! grin but I like them to be perfect!!

I would actually contact both and tell them. It may be a problem with the supplier (and it may well be the same one, surprisingly!) - it's only by getting feedback from the customer that they can identify a problem.

It's difficult with fresh goods that you can't see inside, so even though they probably randomly sample, the more negative feedback they get the more likely they will be to deal with it.

I recently bought a piel de sapo melon from Sainsburys only because it was on offer. It is absolutely delicious.

I hate this too. Sometimes mangoes are the seem, even those that say “ripe and ready to eat”. Very disappointing.

Primrose53 Thu 15-Aug-24 17:27:42

Same not seem

BlueBelle Thu 15-Aug-24 17:31:57

Leave them a day or two they ll soften

BlueBelle

Leave them a day or two they ll soften

I wish! They don’t even though Our house is warm and sunny.

BlueBelle Thu 15-Aug-24 17:45:08

Well maybe 4/5 days 🤣🤣🤣

eddiecat78 Thu 15-Aug-24 18:01:43

I buy "perfectly ripe" kiwi fruit from Tesco - they usually aren't

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 18:10:39

I bought a different looking melon from Lidl a while back, and am still waiting for it to ripen enough to be able to eat it.
£1.99 it cost me, too.

PamelaJ1 Thu 15-Aug-24 18:18:35

Could you put them in with a banana, that should speed up the ripening process.

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 18:32:48

Oh yes.
Good thinking, thanks. smile

JackK Thu 15-Aug-24 20:04:54

*puts Bananas on the shopping list
* leaves one tupperware container of unripened melon on the worktop for 4-5 days
*will take the Waitrose melon back tomorrow
Thanks everyone ☺️

The French weigh melons in their hand to find the heaviest. Most in this country are picked too early and will never reach the stage of ripeness found in warmer climes.

Jaxjacky Fri 16-Aug-24 13:20:23

Probably imported, then kept in chillers to slow ripening, it’s sometimes a problem with food that’s had a lot of travel.

You could add more fruit and make a smoothie? I’ve really enjoyed making these for our grandsons who been with us this week.
I have the same problem with avocados, when they’re described as ‘ready to eat’.

MissAdventure Fri 16-Aug-24 14:19:02

I've just thrown the unripe melon.

Fed up with moving it from place to place, and it took up most of the fridge.

pascal30 Fri 16-Aug-24 16:24:55

before cutting the melon try pressing the area where the stalk was.. it should be soft.. then smell to see if it smells sweet.. I hope this helps.. I wish someone could give advise on mangoes though..

JackK Fri 16-Aug-24 19:02:56

Thanks everyone, update:
I took the tupperware containers to Aldi and they gave me a replacement (which I analysed thoroughly - in the way that Pascal 30 advised ...
Then I took the other tupperware to Waitrose, and not only did they replace it - they gave me a full refund too!

Enjoy your new melons!
