I agree that there are many dishes no longer seen on restaurant menus that should be relegated to room 101.
Remember the powdered soups served as a starter or the egg mayonnaise with the ubiquitous dark ring around the yolk?

However there are things that IMHO should be reintroduced.

I have a glut of freshly picked brambles and remembered that grand dessert “Charlotte Russe” the boudoir fingers, beautiful berry bavarois and a topping of cream and berries.

I would love to see it on a restaurant menu but it’s unlikely so I’m probably going to make one tomorrow!

What old favourite would you like to come back in vogue?

Black Forest Gateaux, a well made juicy one is just so delicious.

BigBertha1 Fri 23-Aug-24 09:47:08

I love Charlotte Russe and Baked Alaska for pudding. I'm rather bored by cheesecake and Sticky Toffee pudding that is just a darkish sponge with dates or a decent sauce (had one last Sunday I made comments on the review).

I live near the black forest and it has never gone away here. However it is eaten purely as a cake and not served as a dessert.

I'm not sure what used to be on restaurant menus back in the day as I left the UK in my early twenties, not having eaten out much. My father ate out a lot during the week as he was a "commercial traveller" and fed up with restaurant food and my mother was such a good cook we always ate at home. I am coming to England for a two week holiday soon, so I will be interested to see how fashions have changed. I expect lot of the stodgy puddings of yore will have vanished (won't miss them).

I am looking forward to lots of fresh 🐟 fish dishes and maybe trying some Indian food. And seeking out a good carvery - now that's something that didn't used to exist. So I'll be following this thread to see what people eat these days.

Our local restaurants do not serve the old fashioned classics I like. I can’t imagine they will now every menu no matter where we go is the same. Our daughter living in Lancashire is very fortunate there is an abundance of pubs and restaurants. There are some still serving a classic pie or Lancashire hotpot which is my idea of heaven.

At home I make Queen of puddings lemon surprise apple crumble tapioca and rice pudding on a regular basis. I also make the old traditional meals faggots hot pots oxtail stew and Scouse. I cook old fashioned British foods I never tire of them they are served up most weeks reminding me of my childhood. Some are time consuming but my mum did them and had nine of us to feed.

Chicken Kiev used to be a restaurant luxury. Now any old Tom Dick or Harry can buy it in any supermarket. grin

Crepes Suzette - flambeed at the table!

And slightly off centre - we thought we were the height of sophistication ordering a bottle of Mateus Rose.

Prawn cocktail
Coronation Chicken

Indigo8 Fri 23-Aug-24 10:33:40

Starter: Prawn Cocktail (sometimes with half an avocado)

Main: Canard a l'orange (not the version made with orange squash)

Dessert: Zabaglione (not the ice cream version)

Very 1970s and superb if done properly.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 23-Aug-24 10:34:39

We have an abundance of Turkish Restaurants all serving excellent Taramasalata.

I have seen prawn cocktail on most restaurants still, even the local Indian ones.

And what has happened to Spanish Onions? Mild for a salad but I never see them now?

MiniMoon Fri 23-Aug-24 10:51:04

I was in a country pub recently and found leek pudding on the menu.
My mother used to make it, I remember the pudding basin rattling in the pan as it steamed.
In another pub I ordered the liver and onions.
I love a summer pudding, you never find that on a menu anywhere.

I went with my mum to a cafe last week.
She likes meringue.
We had eton mess.

She would have liked to have seen meringues, topped with raspberries and cream.
I said we would have to be back in the 80s for that.

Suet pudding with roast. Steamed in a sock of course.

Pretty much everything that's been mentioned is making my mouth water.

I would guess many of us of a "certain age" cook what our Mother and Grandmother cooked. It really annoys me when something comes back into fashion and gets all chefified (new word?) the price shoots up.

Oxtail was really expensive last winter. Gurnard, an ugly and much underused fish which I love and could sometimes get in our local fishmonger for very little money is now almost a luxury fish.

We still have beef olives here in Scotland - most of the supermarkets sell them. You can even get ones with haggis in them, which are absolutely delicious. I've also had pork olives, which were filled with a sage and onion sausagement stuffing and they were very good too.

Samphire used to be something we gathered off the beach, soaked it to get it clean in a tin bath, boiled it within an inch of its life, then bottled it in malt vinegar. To be eaten with cold meats.

Now it’s an expensive delicacy, that you eat as a posh vegetable.

NotAGran55 Fri 23-Aug-24 13:14:24

Fruit juice as a starter.
Melba toast (with pate)

vegansrock Fri 23-Aug-24 13:21:30

Cheese and pineapple
Snowball
babycham
Lemon meringue pie
Anything with offal

Casdon Fri 23-Aug-24 13:25:30

My grandma used to make a dessert called Spanish cream, I’ve never seen that since I was a little girl. In the early days of pizza restaurants in the UK I also remember a common order was half a pizza, with a jacket potato and coleslaw, which I haven’t seen as an option for about thirty years either.

Casdon Fri 23-Aug-24 13:27:28

You can still get Babycham at Christmas, I always get some as I still love a brandy and Babycham - a seventies favourite even now.

Ooo yes. My favourite.

My mum used to make hock and dough. That used to nice and tasty.

SparklyGrandma Fri 23-Aug-24 13:57:10

Marks do a great frozen Black Forrest Gateau.

Blackberries are gorgeous here in atm, made blackberry and apple crumble 2 weeks ago.

Anyone remember Queen of Puddings?

annsixty Fri 23-Aug-24 14:05:25

I would love a real chicken Maryland like we used to have in the 50s/60s.
It is possible I would be disappointed but would love the chance.

Judy54 Fri 23-Aug-24 14:09:27

Tripe and onions Ugh! and Liver in any form. No thank you do not want to return to that type of food ever!
