I never thought I would be asking about something like this, but at 87 I have arthritis in my wrists and hands and shoulders, and peeling potatoes is painful. Has any Gransnetter tried any of the ready mashed types that you can buy? If so would you recommend? I didn't even know there was such a thing until my daughter suggested it, but as she has never tried it herself she couldn't recommend one. I am struggling with feeding the two of us and really don't want to go as far as ready meals yet. Thank you for any help.

There's no shame on using frozen mash I don't like Auntie Bessie's personally it's too "buttery" Asda Tesco Aldi etc are all good but Iceland is my fave I always have a bag in the freezer - less waste and my arthritic thumbs are glad!

spottybook

We like M &S ready mashed potato. They also do an excellent colcannon.

I agree, I think M&S is the best ready mash.

Frozen is great but I swear by Idahoan esp the cheese one

I didnt know until a friend was moving home and had to clear her freezer and offered me frozen potato mash. As I had no cost I tried it thinking it would be awful, but it wasn't. As on my own now I use the frozen version. Give it a go, bit of butter added and you will hopefully enjoy.

I’ve never tried instant or supermarket mash, but if you’re looking for a recommended ready meal which we have occasionally I don’t think you can beat Charlie Bingham. Quite pricey but they are the most natural.

The trick is to use hot milk instead of water and whip in lots ! Of butter . Idaho is a good brand

Thank you both for providing me with Supermarkets that sell Idapoan - will now give it a try.

Tesco frozen mash is lovely even without adding anything to it,..

My grandchildren enjoy "Maggi", a well known Spanish Brand of Mashed Potatoes when they visit ..

I have frozen mash to thicken soups or casseroles that I’ve put too much liquid in. I buy m&S baking potatoes and microwave one and mash that. DH likes the peel everywhere boiling the kitchen out do it yourself mash. The Clearing up!

Tesco, M&S, Asda, Sainsbury’s, all do a very palatable mashed potato and also sweet potato mash which I like a lot.

Go for the premium range if you have a choice.
It’s more buttery I would say.

P.S.
They only take a few minutes in the microwave to heat up if you have one.

you can get little pots of mash potato, dehydrated, add boiling water and wait 2mins; then stir...

I really dislike frozen mashed potato, and am another user of Idaho buttery instant potatoes. At 85 and not eating potatoes regularly, but with a husband who enjoys them, I find a good instant mash is a great help. Idaho is very good quality, and of course you can add any flavourings you like - garlic, mustard, cheese, etc. And so easy!

I use Frozen mash, I have found that Aunt Bessies, Sainsbury's and Tesco's brands are nicer than others, Asda and Iceland's are not too bad, most of them can be made better with a knob of butter, sprinkle of pepper or mixed in with some grated cheese

I wish I hadn't looked at this post! I've just ordered 14 packets of Idaho mash from Amazon, if it's as good as you say I shall be back with a review, I should have it in time for our meal tonight and won't be telling the OH as a test. I already have Chef Akila, thanks to Gnetters, at this rate I won't be cooking anythinggrin

MissAdventure Thu 19-Sept-24 11:34:33

Oh yes, please do a review, because a few of us had never heard of it.

buffyfly9 Thu 19-Sept-24 11:37:18

I certainly will Miss Adventure as I hadn't heard of it either!

MissAdventure Thu 19-Sept-24 11:39:28

Oh, sausage, mash onions and peas, with thick gravy.
I do have veggie sausages now, but that's a real tester of good mash, I always think. smile

I love frozen garlic mash from Iceland- it’s easy to prepare as it’s in chunks and you just add water or milk your preference and goes into microwave- enjoy 🤞

Thank you for all who recommended Idahoan mash - I also had never heard of it. I had my Waitrose delivery this morning and after reading all your messages yesterday I ordered one packet to try. I can't peel potatoes due to injured hands and love mash. I have mince in the freezer so will make shepherds pie tonight - I can't wait!! Will let you know how I get on. A while ago I tried Smash - it was awful.
