Ready Mashed Potato recommendations please?

I never thought I would be asking about something like this, but at 87 I have arthritis in my wrists and hands and shoulders, and peeling potatoes is painful. Has any Gransnetter tried any of the ready mashed types that you can buy? If so would you recommend? I didn't even know there was such a thing until my daughter suggested it, but as she has never tried it herself she couldn't recommend one. I am struggling with feeding the two of us and really don't want to go as far as ready meals yet. Thank you for any help.

Not really to do with what best 'fake' mash there is but it might make someone smile. Many, many years ago married to my first husband I realised I had some how run out of potatoes apart from a couple of smallish ones. Speaking to a friend of my problem she said 'use some Smash' I'd seen the ad but had never bought any, he always made comments when he saw the ad. She kindly let me have some of hers she used as a 'stand by'. Then she said 'Just a little tip cook the couple of potatoes you have and mash them with the Smash but don't make them perfectly smooth. My husband ate his meal said it was nice but the potatoes were a bit lumpy. No I didn't feel guilty at all as I hadn't said it was real potato. I did smile though. 😉

Oh I'll definitely get some, then.
I often put bits away in the cupboard, sooner than the frozen version, just so it takes up less room.

I was recommended some microwave sausages, 1 min micro 1 min rest.
Handy for my boy to have, sooner than nothing. smile

2 generous( ok greedy!) adult portions. It’s tasty with some butter and spring onions or shredded cooked cabbage mixed through it although it’s tasty just plain.

MissAdventure Mon 23-Sept-24 09:50:35

Oh thanks.

4 normal people or 2 greedy ones, sort of size, I presume?

Grannynannywanny Mon 23-Sept-24 09:48:20

It’s usually around £1.30 in Tesco MissA.

Thank you.
I wonder how it compares in price to the frozen mash...

Well, further to my previous message I tried the Idahoan buttery mash on my Shepherds pie. It was so easy and delicious. Thank you to those who recommended it as I had never heard of it before. It will now be added to my Waitrose on-line weekly delivery.

Frozen pellets from Tesco are brilliant my 805 year old mother used them all the time. DH and I use them too great for topping of shepherds pie no more huge pan to clean. Highly recommend

Sainsbury's own frozen mash pellets microwave nicely and have a genuine buttery taste. Some brands have less taste than wallpaper paste.

Thank you.
I must buy some, I think. smile

I said I would come back with the review of the Idaho mash. We had a packet this evening, I took the advice of another poster who advised using milk instead of water and only 400ml. I added some butter to the milk and brought it to the boil and added the potato. It was very nice, a bit dry so next time I will make it with 450m, it has a good consistency and flavour so I will definitely be using it from now on.

Idaho mashed potato mix. Comes in sachets. I used to get it on Amazon but I see a lot of supermarkets now do it. No strain on your wrists as it’s a quick stir and it’s ready. It’s really creamy and tastes very much of the real mash. I would never make my own mash again!

Aldi so handy and spares so much hassle. Pop in microwave for couple of minutes then fork thru and another minute or so. I add a bit of butter before serving.

Iceland is also my favourite.

My only complaint is that it's such a big bag for the money! smile
Takes up a lot of freezer space.

BlueBelle

Thank you for all who recommended Idahoan mash - I also had never heard of it. I had my Waitrose delivery this morning and after reading all your messages yesterday I ordered one packet to try. I can't peel potatoes due to injured hands and love mash. I have mince in the freezer so will make shepherds pie tonight - I can't wait!! Will let you know how I get on. A while ago I tried Smash - it was awful.

Bea65 Thu 19-Sept-24 11:58:20

I love frozen garlic mash from Iceland- it’s easy to prepare as it’s in chunks and you just add water or milk your preference and goes into microwave- enjoy 🤞

MissAdventure Thu 19-Sept-24 11:39:28

Oh, sausage, mash onions and peas, with thick gravy.
I do have veggie sausages now, but that's a real tester of good mash, I always think. smile

buffyfly9 Thu 19-Sept-24 11:37:18

I certainly will Miss Adventure as I hadn't heard of it either!

MissAdventure Thu 19-Sept-24 11:34:33

Oh yes, please do a review, because a few of us had never heard of it.

buffyfly9 Thu 19-Sept-24 11:30:11

I wish I hadn't looked at this post! I've just ordered 14 packets of Idaho mash from Amazon, if it's as good as you say I shall be back with a review, I should have it in time for our meal tonight and won't be telling the OH as a test. I already have Chef Akila, thanks to Gnetters, at this rate I won't be cooking anythinggrin

Omaju Thu 19-Sept-24 11:22:57

I use Frozen mash, I have found that Aunt Bessies, Sainsbury's and Tesco's brands are nicer than others, Asda and Iceland's are not too bad, most of them can be made better with a knob of butter, sprinkle of pepper or mixed in with some grated cheese

Nannan2 Thu 19-Sept-24 00:26:05

My goodness yes i had forgotten about the Yeomen one Daddima. When did that dissapear & i never noticed🤔😂

Cathedral City cheesy mash is delicious

I really dislike frozen mashed potato, and am another user of Idaho buttery instant potatoes. At 85 and not eating potatoes regularly, but with a husband who enjoys them, I find a good instant mash is a great help. Idaho is very good quality, and of course you can add any flavourings you like - garlic, mustard, cheese, etc. And so easy!
