First casserole of Autumn tonight

Made a lovely beef casserole tonight with celery, potatoes, carrots and onions and parsley. The menfolk ordered dumplings too.

After a summer of lighter food it was a real treat and a reminder that Autumn is here.

Did the menfolk come home from the fields, singing as they approached their dumplings?

I made a venison casserole today in my slow cooker. And made double the amount to freeze .

I did the same (beef) for tea tonight in the slow cooker minus dumplings. It was delicious.

I made an old fashioned Toad in the Hole with mash, peas and onion gravy

I’m doing a beef one Saturday, but tbh we’ve had casseroles in the slow cooker throughout the ‘summer’ on the wet dismal days.

Yes, singing and swinging their lanterns. 😉

A homely fold tune connected with threshing no doubt.

I eat casseroles and stews all year round. My preferred main meal. Tomorrow I will be trying out a new recipe for a date, soy and beef casserole.

All has been safely gathered in by now.

Dumplings! Haven't eaten them for years, must keep that in mind for a cold winter's day.

Same here. I’ve never understood this summer/ winter food thing. Had one of my favourites last week: pork in port.

Here in Lancashire my gran used to call Dumplings "little lads" .

Not sure why confused

But I remember being bit puzzled when someone chirped up " are we having little lads with the stew tonight.

We called them doughballs I make them with mince .Today I made old fashioned Irish Stew,Lamb ,onion carrots and potatoes .Imcooking for my sister who is home after a full year in hospital. She loves the old fashioned food my mum cooked so it’s all simple soups and stews for now. She,s paralysed down one side so things she can eat with a spoon are the order of the day …and nothing with what she calls fancy sauces

henetha Wed 02-Oct-24 23:58:25

I took one out of the freezer yesterday which I made last winter. It tasted ok.
I'm looking forward now to more stews and casseroles as I don't eat them in warmer weather.

Well I hope you enjoyed it anything homemade is best. We have not had good weather apart from the rare summer day we have been eating casseroles and stews for ages. It is comfort food to be enjoyed anytime no matter what the weather or season at least in our household.

Winter and summer food How strange I ve never heard if that I eat what I fancy whatever day of the year it is !!!
Half of our summers are winter anyway 🤣🤣🤣

I tend to cook/eat for the day rather than the season so earlier this week when rain was biblical the slow cooker was filled with pork loin, apples and sage casserole. Not only did it taste good, it warmed my tiny kitchen as well!

GrannyIvy Thu 03-Oct-24 07:51:47

I did The Hairy Biker’s cottage pie hadn’t cooked that recipe for ages a lovely warming meal. I love lots of their recipes

My 5 year old grandson loves my beef casseroles .... we have him 2 days a week after school and one of those days he always has casserole smile
It means we have casseroles all year round but we don't mind about that.

Now that sounds nice. I have got the last of this seasons apples in a bowl in the kirchen. I have made one apple cake nd plan 2 more. That will still leave a few apples to finish and there is plenty of sage just outside the back door.

I’m going to look for a recipe for that!
