Out of date canned food

I have been sorting out my cupboards and have found a can of tinned tomatoes that must have rolled right to the back - went out of date August 2023. Would they be safe to use do you think?

Yes.

No

I would use them, but I'd look/smell/tiny taste first.

Yes.

Go on, live dangerously. Feel the fear and eat it anyway.

😁

Yes. If the tin itself looks fine.

I would open the can and if it looks clean (no rust or marks), has no dents and there is no nasty smell I would use them.

This is where the difference between ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ comes in.
As far as I am aware, tinned food is the former so it should be perfectly safe to eat, but possibly wouldn’t be at its best!

I never ignore the use by dates though as consuming out of date foods could cause sickness.

Definitely use them - canned food didn’t used to have dates on it and is meant to last for years. As long as the can isn’t damaged in any way it will be fine.

YesOverthemoongran, I agree.

I'm another one who would expect it to be fine, but would inspect the tin for rust pr dents, and use my nose to check that the contents are okay.

When you open it you will soon see. I’d use them in heartbeat!

Retroladywriting Fri 04-Oct-24 14:15:26

I'd use them, probably in a casserole and making sure it reaches boiling point first - just in case.

Celieanne86 Fri 04-Oct-24 14:20:55

Use them, during the war my mother hoarded tinned stuff for years, no such thing as sell by dates then.
I remember a tin of corned beef being ceremoniously opened on VE Day and a pile of sandwiches made from the contents. It must have been have been at least 5 or 6 years old and none of us died so go on be a devil 😂

Agree with many others - if the tin looks okay, no dents or rust, the contents should be okay.

Was that ‘best before’ or ‘use by’?
Canned food will typically keep for years, as long as the can isn’t damaged.

GrannyIvy Fri 04-Oct-24 15:07:51

Personally I wouldn’t use it, if it was a few months yes but not over a year.

Ziplok Fri 04-Oct-24 15:08:46

Yes, they should be fine as the date will be a “best before” rather than a “use by” date I would think. Check the can to ensure there are no bulges or signs of rust. If there are no signs and it’s a BBF date, they will be fine. I opened a can of mackerel fillets in tomato sauce last week that had a best before date of Oct 2023. I checked the can, then smelled them and they were absolutely fine.
I think with BBF dates, the quality might not be quite the same, but otherwise safe to eat, whereas use by dates mean that the food could be dangerous to eat if more than a day or so past that date.

Jaxjacky Fri 04-Oct-24 15:24:27

I’d use them if the cans are intact.

BlueBelle Fri 04-Oct-24 15:29:09

Yes of course they re fine I never bother with dates

Caleo Fri 04-Oct-24 15:44:57

Dispose of all blown tins whatever the date!

Tinned food will last for years, decades, quite safely.

In 1865 a steam ship called the Bertrand sank in the Missouri river. It was a freighter and had all the supplies, food clothing that inland frontier towns might want. The wreck was discovered in 1968.

In 1974, samples of canned food from the wreck, including brandied peaches, oysters, plum tomatoes, honey, and mixed vegetables, were tested by the National Food Processors Association. Although their appearance, smell, and vitamin content had deteriorated, there was no trace of microbial growth and the food was determined to be still safe to eat.

So I really would not worry about a tin stamped best before August 2023 - or even 1923!!!!!

Tomatoes will be fine !

Calendargirl Fri 04-Oct-24 17:27:56

Yes.
