I always buy fresh potatoes but they are now
awful , green or black specs all over and they turn greenish when cooked . I suffer with bowel problems and can only eat white potatoes.
Does anyone know where I can get a decent potato from ?
I've tried all the supermarkets with no luck .
Really missing a nice potato that stays white after cooking .

It’s usually how potatoes are stored that causes them to go green rather than the variety used. I take mine out of the plastic bag straight away and store them in a heavyweight brown paper bag. I always keep the brown paper bags I receive from online deliveries for storing root vegetables and peelings for the compost bin.

Thanks for all the replies everyone , much appreciated .
For years I had Desiree but never see them anymore .
Same with Osprey, never see them now .
I like African Sweet potatoes but sadly they don't like me , I always get an upset stomach after them now so don't have them anymore. .
My late mother would only buy red potatoes because she said white were only grown to give to the pigs grin

I found a name on the Lidl potatoes I had. They’re called Osprey. I can’t say I’ve heard of them before but they’re very good.

This summer I was on a research diet where I had to consume A LOT of potatoes. I found a variety in the Co op called ‘yellow queen’. I have to say, they are the best (aside from Cyprus) potatoes I’ve ever eaten. Yellowish flesh, creamy and flavoursome. I’ve not found them anywhere else other than the Co op.

I only buy Maris Piper for boiled, mashed and roasted and they're always good regardless of where I buy them from.

My favourites are Marabel. I usually find them in Asda as their Extra Special range. They often have them in packs of 4 for baking but if i remember correctly sometimes as a mixed size bag. Sorry but i've no idea of the price. They really make a lovely baked potato.

Also, Charlotte is super as a small salad potato.

Marks & Spencer do lively white potatoes.

🤣🤣
Sorry, but I couldn't help giggling. I had a mental picture of a bag full of potatoes jumping up and down and twittering like hungry nestlings.

To be serious, I don't use many potatoes but the ones delivered by Ocado - big ones to bake and little new potatoes - are excellent quality and keep well in the bottom of the fridge.
Vivaldi or Rooster are good all-purpose varieties while Cornish Kings are superb little new potatoes for plain boiling.

I’m usually a Tesco shopper too, no problems with their potatoes. Are they already ‘duff’ when you get them home? Where/how are you storing them?

You must get them out of the plastic asap and into a paper bag or empty cereal packet, the light makes them go green. Keep them in a dark airy place.

Ocado Alluette with white flesh and a red skin.

Yesterday we bought a couple of white baking potatoes from our local Aldi. (Sold singly at 22p each.) Baked in microwave - delicious!

Funnily enough, I prefer red potatoes. The variety I used to buy was Desirée but that doesn't seem to be available any more. So today I bought Laura at Tesco.
Now that it's just me, the price of a couple of kilos doesn't seem very important. My days of sacks of potatoes and flour are long gone.

Lyndie Sat 02-Nov-24 15:01:46

Wilja's. They roast particularly well.

Greciangirl Sat 02-Nov-24 14:39:35

I tried boiling and mashing some red potatoes last week, but they turned mushy when soft.
White potatoes I find generally are much better for mashing.

Tesco’s generally have good quality potatoes I find.

Scotch whites or Lincoln’s foe me.
Keep well, and all round use.

I don`t know about anyone else, but I find that potatoes just don`t keep as well as they used to. Years ago, we bought them by the sackload, and they lasted ages.

I agree, I usually only buy relatively small quantities now, particularly of large potatoes.
I often buy new potatoes, they seem to keep better than others. I actually keep these (raw) in the fridge which is know is not recommended but they last a decent length of time. I cook a bagful at a time and then use them over a couple of days, one day just boiled, then they sauté or roast beautifully in the air fryer and I usually have a couple left for a tortilla for Saturday breakfast.

I get King Edward’s from M & S or Waitrose. I am not keen on Maris Piper. Arthur Bartlett have a nice texture and flavour too, they do red and white. They are particularly good for baked potatoes.

cc Sat 02-Nov-24 13:10:39

Maris Pipers for me too.
I'm getting increasingly irritated by the larger potatoes sold as suitable for jacket potatoes that take much longer than usual to cook. I'm not sure what varieties they are.
Has anybody else found this?

sankev Sat 02-Nov-24 13:03:20

Maris Piper definitely get my vote. Good all rounder and generally keep well out of the plastic packaging and in a cool dark place.

Mojack26 Sat 02-Nov-24 12:32:52

I grow my own usually Maris Pipers. Same with onions..I store them in the dark in garage.

EmilyHarburn Sat 02-Nov-24 12:26:30

I buy red skinned Bartlett potatoes or washed white potatoes each week from Aldi. Take them out of their plastic bags and store them in the bottom fridge basket.

Helene Sat 02-Nov-24 12:20:03

Albert Bartley potatoes are lovely and have a nice yellow flesh

SueBdoo70 Sat 02-Nov-24 11:37:05

I buy Vivaldi potatoes from Sainsbury’s. I find them a really good all rounder.

Summerfly Sat 02-Nov-24 11:34:40

I like Cyprus potatoes Moonwatcher. They make the best chips, but we don’t seem to have them around my neck of the woods. Sainsbury’s do a nice one called Vivaldi and Aldi potatoes always seem good.

brummie Sat 02-Nov-24 11:10:30

Unlike some of the respondents I have found Tesco veg especially potatoes to be really poor quality. I either buy from Aldi or Waitrose - both have been super fresh .
