White Potatoes , Can Anyone Recommend .

I buy Maris Piper or King Edwards they’ve been fine from Tesco. I’ve mashed, roasted, baked them lovely and fluffy.

Maris Pipers are the potatoes I always go for, I'd echo Tanith's comments.

agreed, definitely use maris piper or king edward, good all round varieties

I sometimes use farms.
But no idea if you live city life.

Farmer's markets?

I don`t know about anyone else, but I find that potatoes just don`t keep as well as they used to. Years ago, we bought them by the sackload, and they lasted ages.

I’m usually a Tesco shopper too, no problems with their potatoes. Are they already ‘duff’ when you get them home? Where/how are you storing them?

Ive never has potatoes go green after cooking, if you keep them in the light they will go green and you should not eat them.

Piper or Edward’s are both good allrounders but both will boil into the water if you leave then too long. Generally the creamy fleshed varieties will stay firm longer.

I used to buy Maris Piper from Tesco, then they started to charge silly price so I switched to the All Rounders and never had any problems. Always take them out of the plastic bags, as I do all veg bought from the shops. Keep in a dark place.
But I was glad to go back to going and buying a sack from the farm a couple weeks ago.

Those sack loads weren't washed, they were just harvested and bagged. I think that's why they kept longer. That and being kept cool and dark.

You need to go to a veg shop not a supermarket.

I always used to buy them in the sack from the farm but sadly they've stopped selling them . Tried a farm shop but they were old and soft. I always take them out of the plastic bag and keep them in a cool dark place but they seem old from the start . Loads of comments on all the supermarkets websites about how bad the potatoes are .
I agree king Edwards are nice if you can get them fresh.
Packing them in plastic bags doesn't help .

Like others, I find Tesco’s all rounders perfectly acceptable. They do not go floury on cooking but mash and roast well.

I have a friend who orders a sack of Agria potatoes from a farm, and lets me have some, as I don't eat many potatoes. They are good to cook, mash and roast well, and don't discolour, but most are bought by the catering trade.

Get one of those blackout bags made specially for potatoes. Mine keep for ages in the dark of one of those. It is light that makes them go green.

Wilja are really nice potatoes, around here the butcher often sells bags.

Farmers Market? Farm Shop - ask the farmer?

Jaxjacky it's ok for the couple months farm ones are not available, but when I can get a 25kg bag from the farm for £9 I think I know which ones I'll buy. It's a different variety (Sapphire) but I find they are good for everything. Not washed but not covered in dirt, stored in paper bags so they keep better too.

If you buy washed potatoes use them quickly, 2 or 3 weeks and they should be fine, a cool place dark is needed I use the bottom of the fridge for small quantities

justno pneed we are back buying from our farm shop, reds, they disappeared in the summer, but back now, 5kg for £4 which we don’t mind. I don’t know the type, but they keep and cook well.

We’ve had some superb baking potatoes recently from Lidl. It doesn’t give a variety name on the pack but they are lovely. I’m using them for everything, not just jacket potatoes. They’re so large just one makes enough mash for two people.

The local farm shop here sells their own grown potatoes for double the price of the farm we go to get ours, so if the farm growing ours is making a profit someone is trying it on and the local one is not going to get our business. My nephew bought a 12.5kg bag there for nearly the same price as we get the 25kg ones, he was not amused when he realised he had half the amount of spuds for the same money! 36p a kilo for us is great.
